To anyone watching this thinking of doing things that put your freedom at risk remember this, your family suffers as much or worse than you. Usually worse. They’re living in a mental prison they can’t escape from even being out in the world. They worry about your well being, they miss you, any wonderful times are always marred by their thoughts of you. Wishing you were there, just missing you, asking themselves why you did what you did, if there was anything they could’ve done differently to prevent you from making that mistake. Despite being an impoverished country, these Peruvian prisons appear to be way more humane and clean, even though they're overcrowded, than many other South American prisons. Can't imagine why foreigners would risk lengthy sentences for a lousy several thousand euros.
Lousy for you but worth risking it for for others. You never know what they would use that money for. It could be a parent with a severely ill child that needs money for surgery and can't get it unless they have the funding. I've heard stories like that and it's truly sad. The entire war on drugs is futile. A waste of money, prison space, and resources. As long as it's it's illegal and the huge demand remains, there are massive amounts of money to be made. You pick up one trafficker, two will replace him. Legalize it. It's the only way.
Yes, and legalizing it means there is still a massive amount of money to be made, but legitimately like any other legal business, but without the violence, murder, smuggling and prison sentences
Sure we all understand that its more about how the powers that be make a million or so percent more off of it being illegal , and not caring if its to the detriment of the ppl!
The question that a lot of people ask is, why do they do this? The reason is there is no documentary on the mules that do get away with it. And it is my bet, many do. The one question that wasn't asked of these current inmates was, was this the first time? My feeling is for most it isn't.
Most coke comes floor to ceiling in shipping containers, my country of Scotland is being dismantled slowly by drug abuse but coke is everywhere lately.

When I was 8 my family vacationed in Cancun. A white couple in front of us was handed a brown paper baggie from some guy that popped out of nowhere, in ten seconds the cops swarmed on them and had them in cuffs. Fortunately my father witnessed the whole thing and was fluent in Spanish. He told the police they should be ashamed of themselves doing this to the people that provide their livlihood, and he would be accompanying them to the police station to give a statement. The police quickly freed the couple and took off as fast as they had arrived. The couple was eternally grateful and bought our family dinner for helping them. I've been living in Peru since two years now (not keeping myself busy with drugs though) and you can carry up to 5 grams of cocain paste and 8 grams of cannabis, without prosecution. But when they catch you with cannabis seeds or a plant, you go to jail for at least two years. Also if you're a dealer and the police finds out, they happily help lady justice with some extra evidence against you. Just don't do crime, it leads to nowhere.
I think the smugglers themselves tell the authorities about one delivery so it can appear they are doing their job. There's no way they could just catch a guy like that without being first informed by someone.

This fellow does narration for many documentaries and does a great job....just wonder how many this one got killed. Or worse as there many things worse than death. Found out about them by accident while checking out the area around Ica prior to a mission there. Was actually planning to move to Peru. Was buying a small hotel to use as destination for American missionaries, college students and tourists. Sad that the country has swiftly became the next drug smuggling go to spot but people there just trying to survive like the rest of the world. Billions of dollars flowing into the country but few them find their way to "regular" folks. Hope to return some day but not looking good. Remember, "Stones of Ica". rick in Tennessee.
Most smuggling and manufacture occurs in Colombia, Equador, Central America and Mexico. There is some smuggling etc in Peru but not at the extent as claimed in this documentary.
@Answersonapostcard Well, I've worked in all of them but can't claim to know the extent of production in each one BUT seems to be a definite uptick in volume in Peru. Perhaps we were just inefficient in our search efforts. Thanks for reading and taking the time to reply.

This needs to be the standard of how a prison should be like. Instead of the taxpayer funding it, prisoners should set up their own micro economies inside to survive. Here in the U.S. each prisoner costs the taxpayer over $50k a year.
@@davidm5417 The point is that 14 kilos of cocaine on the streets of Europe was going to ruin the lives of many people, so 14 yrs of confinement is an adequate time to sit down with yourself and think about why you should never do it again. When criminals go without punishment they tend to not care about repeating the same crime again and again and again. Look at California for example.
@@unknown-user I am not sure if she was smuggling 14kgs. The others who got caught in the video had much less...and I don't think cocain ruins many lives. I never tried it but I'm not blind. Meth or heroin are a different story, the users seem to be totally ruined both physically and mentally and are danger for their surroundings. So yes, she still did something illegal but losing 5 years of her life would be enough of a punishment and lesson
Never involve yourself in drug trafficking, no matter your financial problems. It's not worth the severe consequences. Never bring anything for someone else from one country to another. It can be drugs concealed in it. It's no use in voncealing drugs. The police and customs will find it anyway if you're searched.

I think there’s a fascinating piece of this: each ordinary person serving their first time says they don’t know why they are doing it. They took a chance for no reason. I don’t believe it. None of them are terribly poor. I think they cannot say what it would cost them if they say no. In my opinion, I think there is some kind of force of the will. Regarding the prison- it has advantages- this scheme of using regular citizens as drug traffickers clears the prisons of habitual criminals (fewer assaults, robberies extortions while you are there). They eat actual food (not institutional food like US prisons or starvation rations like Madagascar) and wear regular clothes. They don’t sit in a cell behind bars all the time, like a caged animal. Well that’s what it looks like from what they documented.
Its not worth it. Take it from someone that did 18 years in prison. There is nothing worth jeopardizing your precious time. Live free, even if its poor. Enjoy your family and freedoms.
Imagine the very first drug mule - it was an actual mule that clip-clopped into the airport with giant bulging saddlebags - each overflowing with a mountain of purest Columbian nose candy. The term drug mule stuck ever since this happened.

This needs to be the standard of how a prison should be like. Instead of the taxpayer funding it, prisoners should set up their own micro economies inside to survive. Here in the U.S. each prisoner costs the taxpayer over $50k a year.
yes, on the other hand what is the point of keeping someone there for 14 years (and still funding them even if on low costs) for this kind of crime
@@davidm5417 The point is that 14 kilos of cocaine on the streets of Europe was going to ruin the lives of many people, so 14 yrs of confinement is an adequate time to sit down with yourself and think about why you should never do it again.
