"Irish Heartbeat" is a popular song that was first recorded by Van Morrison's 1983 album Inarticulate Speech of the Heart. A remake with The Chieftains was also included on Morrison's 1988 album, Irish Heartbeat. Another version was recorded with Mark Knopfler for the 2015 release Duets: Re-working the Catalogue.
The song evokes images of returning to Ireland and includes the words: "I'm going back / Going back / To my own ones / Back to talk / Talk awhile / With my own ones". Van Morrison was quoted by his biographer, Steven Turner as remarking: "But there's a big part of me that's just strictly involved with the island of Ireland.
We’re celebrating Dire Straits founder, Mark Knopfler’s birthday (8/12) by getting his thoughts on one of his most impactful influences, Van Morrison, and giving you his rendition of ‘Irish Heartbeat’ from Van’s ‘Duets’ album.
Mark Knopfler talked about what it was like to sing with and play guitar for one of his all-time heroes:
“I just put some guitar on and sang it with Van…I’ve loved Van, of course, and he’s been part of my life, his voice has been part of my life since I was a kid, from Them onwards. And so it’s a natural thing for me, and ‘Irish Heartbeat’ was my choice because I love that song. He does a beautiful version of that as well with the Chieftains.
