Anyone who lives and breathes the thrill of driving should find the time to head on over to Italy for a trip through the Stelvio Pass at one point in their lives. At 9,045 feet, it may not be the most dangerous road in the world, but it is the highest paved road in the Eastern Alps and may suit driving aficionados just fine for a holiday destination. Especially since this famed road features 60 hairpins turns, 48 just on the northern pass, and a wonderful view of beautiful landscapes. That information alone makes Stelvio Pass worthy of just about any bucket list.
The Stelvio Pass was originally built between 1820-1825 by the Austrian Empire. It connects the Valtellina with the upper Adige valley and Merano and covers a climb of 1871 meters (about 1.16 miles). Many tourists head over during open season (June-September) to marvel at the twist and turns, including the trio from Top Gear and the great Stirling Moss.
Stelvio Pass isn't all fun and games. There are many accidents caused by people who underestimate the difficulty of the zig zag road and overestimate the ability of their vehicles. This is especially true from the Prato and Bormio sides where climbing is the most impressive and, at the same time, the most challenging. Even Stirling Moss - a man that has been called "the greatest driver never to win the World Championship" - had trouble on the Stelvio Pass during a classic car race in the 90s. Difficulty level aside, Top Gear set about to find the greatest roads in Europe during their tenth season and were quick to name Stelvio Pass the winner of the competition. Of course, that statement was then retracted when they visited the Transfagarasar Road in Romania, but that's another road for another time...

Ha ha ha I like your driving style. Especially driving past tired drivers. You have also convinced me that you can drive a touring HD on serpentine roads. Want to recommend the pass Timmelsjoch and in Sölden drive up the Ötztaler Gletscherstrasse, then you will arrive at 2830 m. The second highest paved road in Europe, the highest is in Sierra Nevada, Spain

mines just the Ultra classic 2005 model. will also be back this year, in the Dolomites, as passed through there last year for a look on the way to the Stelvio and really liked the look of them. trouble with tight passes is we are loaded with camping gear , makes it fun !!!.

I love your videos--just like being on the ride. You can really handle that Road King! Is your bike stock? From this and some of your other videos your bike appears to have better performance than other Road Kings, and the bike sounds fantastic and strong.
Doubt I'll ever make this ride myself, so really appreciate you allowing me to ride along vicariously.

Danke fürs Kompliment! Beim Upsss war das Auto vor mir viel zu lansam und so bin ich ein wenig aus dem Gleichgewicht gekommen und musste über den kleinen Absatz ausgleichen. Hätt ich gebremst, wärs mir wie vielen anderen gegangen; Umfalleraaa. :-) Hab den offenen Gehäusedeckel dran, ohne ext. Micro. Die Scheibe hält viel Wind ab. Viel Spass in den Dolos, wir gehen ab Samstag für drei Wochen in die französischen Berge und in die Pyrenäen.

Stelle ich mir nicht einfach vor das Teil da hoch um die engen Kehren zu wuchten, hast Du klasse gemacht! Mein Vater hatte mal einen R1200c (BMW Chopper) das fahren hat durchaus Laune gemacht... Viel Spass weiterhin mit dem Teil!

Have you ever had to put your feet on the ground while you were rounding those curves? You almost come to a halt. How does Road King handle at such speeds? I just wanna know how it is feel like to ride such beast! Thank you in advance! :)
No, the feet are never on the ground, you have to shift the weight of the upper body against the curve inside and off you loose around those curves.

haha den schweren Brocken da elegant hoch zu Kurven ist sicher nicht ganz so einfach.... aber ganz gut geschlagen - bis auf den kleinen Ups bei 16:00 xD Hast du bei der GoPro den offenen Gehäusedeckel montiert oder ein ext Mikro für den guten Sound?
