Thank you for reviewing more of a "regular" car. I'm sure we would all love z06's and 911's, but it's nice to get your perspective on normal everyday cars.
TheSmokingTire that's good. I always thought of letting another man drive you car is almost as personal as letting somebody "be with" your girl. I don't know if I would be nervous or just enjoy talking cars with you. On that note here is my wheel well: www.wheelwell.com/profile/552549df0934457e21f9e668/garage/ Not everything is filled out but maybe on one of your trips to NY to visit Larry you can do a one take in my car. TheSmokingTire that's exactly what i was talking about. You must know every states driving roads. Well if you ever want to do some NY one takes. I am in 100%, Charlie's Angels Full Throttle 2
Apart from the subframe scare, which never happened to me, this was my first and most memorable vehicle. This was the very BMW that plunged me into German car ownership and as scared as I was, coming from JDM cars, I was happy to own and work on this car. The e46 328ci will always be close to my heart, eventhough I have owned an e46 330i and an e46 M3. Wonderful years for BMW and truly the last feel-good bmws. I highly recommend e46s bmws to anyone looking for a decent driving BMW with just enough driver aids and modernism. thanks Matt for even considering doing a one take for such a, as most would say, mediocre and slow BMW. The owner is super chill too lol and I'm glad he's kept it clean.
Just bought a mint condition 1999 E36 328i and I couldn't be happier. 80 000 original miles, driven by an old couple in palm beach, not a scratch on the leather. This car still drives like a brand new car.
Dylan Johnson the E46 has aged very well and not much has ever improved on the 6 cylinder engines from this generation. after having two E46's (328i and 330i) I moved to an E90 325i, felt very similar but slightly more economical, if a little down on torque compared to the previous 330.
the E90's front looks alright, but the rear is fugly (very Japanese-like imo). The f30's look pretty nice, but I don't like the fact they're turbo 4-cylinders and not 6 ...
I died when I saw this. I own this exact car, same engine, same number of doors, same rims, and same interior color. Everything in this review is absolutely valid. Only thing I have to say is that if it's just you in the cabin with all the windows closed, you can hear the engine pretty well, but it is on the quieter side
2000 328ci with 256k mi owner checking in here. I love this car, the M52TUB28 that came in it had the M52 piston rings so no oil consumption at all and the last year of cable throttle body for BMW. I freaking love this car. Thank you for this video 😁
I have an E46 235xi 5spd. It needs work like a cv axle, oil filter housing gasket, and a bunch of fluids changed but driving it just puts a smile on my face. Awesome cars.
Amazing car...I have the same year 3 Series but it's a 323 ci , only 170 hp but does the job of being a daily driver , good mpg, reliable and when you drive it in the twisty roads it puts a big smile on your face. Good review Matt!!! Keep it up! Only the 325/330 with the new M54 engine had the 6 speed transmission as an option.
Big Mike the 320i and the 325i got a six speed box after the "facelift" came out. The 320d also got a six speed box. 323i, 328i, 318i and 316i never got 6 speed boxes. Not sure which of those engines came to the US.
The e46 318i,and 316i, as well as the 320d didn't come to the US. The 323 and 328 only were 99 and 2000 I believe. I live in Florida and NEVER see any 323i's. 328's sure. But never a 323i
Big Mike the 323i made it to the states really hard to find i have a 323i wagon they have a M52B23 and the 320d never made it to the US but you can import an engine and everything for a swap from mexico
Big Mike E46 323 coupes are a rare bird. sedans are quite common, and E36 convertibles are not quite so rare. I have a 2000 E46 328ci just like this (only silver) and i thought i got a decent deal at $3700...
Thanks for the one take been waiting for a e46 to pop up lol. I own a e46 330ci sport package love the way she takes corners and the power is always there when i need it (:
Love my E46 325i, bought it for $3,800 with 94k miles. Such a great car with a solid engine and transmission! When you go 65-90 mph, it is so smooth and quiet. Back when BMW went aluminum with their inline six engines and before the N54 was born.
I know right?? That's a fucking steal, I own an e46 330i so I know these cars are pretty balanced. Not fast by any means, but wonderful car nonetheless. mine is almost at 200k miles and can still red line with ease.
I have a 2001 BMW 325ci its been my first sports car and also my first manual its a 5 speed gearbox it has just over 128k miles since I have bought it I have put 13k miles on it in around 8 months of ownership and I do all my own work including replacement of the clutch its only seen 2 winters in its life and 7 years ago it was brought to Ohio from Florida I love driving my car only about one month left to drive it before I have to store it while I'm off for basic training for the Air Force
Nicely done ride, Sam. I've done the same kinda mods to my 05 Boxster S, ECU, Milltek, AASCO, 74mm plenum, short shifter, Bilsteins, ceramic pads. Michelin Super Sport tires will change your life, they are that good. Mods make the car that I want to drive forever...
You have brands who make ports to use USB for hard drives or auxiliary ports for E46 or Corvettes with which you can keep the original radios but use contemporary formats like MP3.
I have '04 330 ZHP sedan that I definitely overpaid for, but it was beautifully sorted mechanically (only front wheel bearings and regular maintenance over the 42k+ miles I've put on it - in less than 2 years). ZHPs were 6-speed cars, and the later 330s you could get the six speed without the other ZHP add-ons. I don't think the 6-speed came on the smaller engines in the US until the e9x. For an AUX jack you can get a cheap little kit that hooks into the slot for the CD changer slot on the back of the stock head unit and it works great. I think that works for all e46 cars. Mine also claims to be wired for Bluetooth but I just use a little Motorola unit that clips to my visor for that. "Not slow" is an excellent description of the pace of these things. Not fast, but not slow. Very smooth, very composed, and very comfortable. I think these (especially the 328s and non-ZHP 330s) are a steal on the used market right now. I've seen cars with well under 100k going for $8-9.
6-10k is quite optimistic. A 2000 328ci with it's sub-frame issues even if the sub-frame has been re-enforced/repaired only goes for the 3-5k range for a nice low mileage example. Even the later model zhp's hover around the 10 -12k mark on the upper end for a low mileage car. Still a great car though even 15 years later. I have had my e46 for ten years now. Although I have had my share of headaches I still love my car. For $2600 this guy did pretty good.
Used to have an E39 528i, till this day the most balanced car I've ever owned. It was a total POS when I got it with shot dampers, oil leaks and crap...but I'll tell ya, even with all those things going on it still rode better than any other car I had before that. If anyone's looking for a relatively cheap great driving sedan --> E39 all the way.
I'm fairly certain that the 330ci got the 6 speed mid-2004 model year. I have an '01 330ci with a 5 speed, and did my research on when the 6 speed began when I got it almost 3 years ago. I definitely spent a little more at 10.5 K in 2012, but it only had 67,000 miles on it at the time, and had only been driven an average of 3,000 - 5,000 miles a year for the 5+ years prior to my buying it. I have the sport package (ZHP wasn't offered until 03-05) so the suspension is upgraded, seats are better bolstered, and it has staggered 225/45/R17s in the front and 245/40/R17s in the rear. I am pretty happy with the sport suspension, but the main things I want to upgrade are a Dinan Intake/Exhaust and software to match, as well as swapping in a Limited Slip. The 328 here has 190 hp/207 ft·lb stock from it's M52, whereas the M54 in the 330 has 225 hp/214 ft·lb in US Spec stock (235 hp/222 ft·lb with the ZHP package with its sportier cams and more aggressive tune). The power in mine is sufficient, I just want a bit more with intake and exhaust so I get a better sound and slightly better response, but really I just want to put that power to BOTH rear wheels.
There is a good head unit for the E46... Navigation units that resemble the same one BMW started using in later model e46s. All you have to do is relocate the a/c module. They are on ebay for around $350.
you can get a aftermarket screen/radio thing (not sure what they're called in english) for the e46 pre and facelift that fits perfectly with bluetooth, nav, radio and all that good stuff, they only problem is they cost like 500 euro a unit
Great cars these. I had one before I got a 330i. The 328 engine wasn't the fastest thing in the world (although at the time I bought it, it was the first car i'd driven that would do 0-60 in less than 7 seconds) but it was so smooth, and had a lovely torque spread which made the engine feel and sound super expensive. I miss my BMW 6 cylinder cars!
Cool car, I had one of these a few years ago. Hate I let it go. the e46 330i ZHP (performance package) came with a 6speed ZF as well as a handful of non ZHP 330i ZSP (Sport Package)
TheSmokingTire Like your lexus is350 video or porsche 911 991c2s. You know, press cars. These videos like this e46 328i are fun too, but I mean you really was one of the (if not the) best out there who reviewed brand new cars. Best wishes
I have an '01 325i and I agree, great daily driver. The build quality in the interior is incredible for its age and the styling has aged very well. Still drives super smooth. Just wish I would have bought a manual. Maintenance and repairs can be costly but I've never paid more than $600 in a single repair, never anything major (knock on wood). I'd rather pay a bit more in upkeep than drive a boring Honda or Toyota.
I've been considering buying an E46 330Ci Manual recently and have always wondered what Matt thought about them. This kind of answers that for me. Cheers!
***** still not true. Steering level was based on time of manufacturing... you can have two identical 330ci-s, one would have very soft (owerpowered) steering, while other would have hard steering. Its not question of some personal opinion, its a fact. You can check the steering parts numbers which were different in different months of manufacturing.
TheSmokingTire Damn ...you really do call them as you see them huh! LOL. Love the way you mix a compliment with a verbal smack down ("really fast POS"). Keep it up!
TheSmokingTire As a Neon SRT-4 owner, I concede that Matt's recollection is fairly accurate. The car isn't with out merit however, and the problem is that it's easy to ruin. Which, when you consider that it's a factory spiced Neon from the outset, well...Let me say that the results can leave a lot to be desired. It shares a lot of spiritual similarities with the DSM. Let me finish this by saying, weighing it's value against it's competitors, both then and now, is a lengthy debate that ultimately just exposes one's biases/preferences and doesn't really leave a clearly crowned winner.
I have the same car (328i 5MT), but its the sedan model. Looking to retire it as my daily driver soon and keep it around as a toy. It's mostly stock, so I'd like to do some upgrades, mainly suspension. Anybody have some recommendations?
I love these cars. such a pleasant package that just works so well together to supply a great driving experience. got my 2002 330ci for $3900 and have loved every second of ownership. just sucks when it comes to purchasing parts. If you're ever in Ohio, you can drive mine if you want to compare models lol.
Daniel Jarnot it depends on the budget the best option in 330 after facelifting with 6speed manual however in EU they tend to be really pricey even up to 10k EUR if you have about 5K go for well serviced and maintained 328 and avoid first models of 330 they tend to take oil and not keep the power, good luck in finding one
Lovely car! I was wondering what the maintenance costs would be on a car like this. Would it be possible to maintain one of these affordably (as in doing labor myself) or are the parts too expensive? I've always loved the E46 generation and was really hoping to get into one soon!
It can get expensive depending on how "perfect" you want your car. Most of the time it's just seals, bushings and the cooling system that need attention. Check this thread: forum.e46fanatics.com/showpost.php?p=16061691&postcount=55
***** It depends where you live. In Europe everyone knows how to work on them. The operations that are not specific to the brand (like changing Vanos seals) are done by most of the shops. I do not agree that they are cars hard to work on. Yes, they are complicated, but they are well engineered and a lot of stuff is standardized. Do you have an example of something that's very hard to do on them when it shouldn't? Parts are on par with other brands price wise (sometimes they are cheaper than those of "lesser" cars). Now, if you're forced to rely on BMW dealerships for parts and troubleshooting, then for sure you need to prepare for the worst. Sorry to hear you had a bad experience with yours.
Tbh, it depends. I have owned a 2000 z3 M coupe for the past two years, and some stuff has been very cheap, while other stuff is very expensive. For example, getting a transmission mount replaced was only $50 for the part. Crazy right? But a replacement gas pedal was a whopping $150. And the check engine light is on, who knows how expensive that will be. It could be something major, it could just be spark plugs/general tune up. A friend of mine was quoted $1500 to get his cats replaced on his 528i. Also some of the M engines fail very quickly (and expensively) if they aren't taken care of. But, that is pretty much the case with all performance engines. What I have found out though, is as long as you don't get too exotic of a model, you will have a reliable car.
Ivan Pineiro just buy a clean one for about $4000 and you'll be fine. easy to work on if you're inclined at all, and parts aren't that bad, unless you're comparing to a civic.
TheSmokingTire Matt, i have been scouring the bay area for a nice e46 330i but the results have been all over the place. What is your opinion of 330 vs 328 vs 325 for a daily + backroader? Is the power loss significant or manageable in your opinion? Great review as always
I used to own an 01' 330. If I could do it over again, I would get a 328 instead. The 330 has BMW's first-gen drive-by-wire electric throttle, which is HORRIBLE. There's always a delay between hitting the throttle and the car accelerating, and when it does accelerate, it lurches forward. And if it's a manual like mine was, you get that delay/lurch every time you change gear. Another thing I learned: if your budget limits you to a crappy 328/330 or a decent 325, get the 325. It's only 6 hp down on the 328, and a poorly maintained E46 is a huge money pit.
Marshall Knutson budget is a little tight but the hardest part is finding a decent one with the sport package. If it dosen't have it im not interested. Interesting about the engine though - i will look into it.
I just paid 3000 euros for a 2000 328ci full stock with only 95k miles it's my first car and so far i'm just super super happy with it it's just an amazing car, not super powerful but it has some move to it i love it.
Sam needs to check out eonon.com I got a sweet head unit with all the modern features and it looks and fits like stock. Bluetooth, iPod, navigation + way more for like $400 cad in my e46 330ci. Also the 330ci in 2004 and above came in a 6 speed. Another great one take Matt!
***** I know right? I don't know about the going rate for these in the States or in Europe but where I live you are looking at at least 12,000 for something like this.
BileMonkey Wow that's not too bad. E46s are expensive as balls over here and if it has problems even more expensive. One of my friends had an E30 and that was horrible to fix anything.
I used to have an e46 330i with the ///M sports package back in high school. First car I ever bought with my own money. Stupid high school me totaled it about 6 months later and now every time i see an e46 I get a little sad. Beautiful car though Sam
Awesome car review, beautiful car. Although, I have to disagree with you regarding the aftermarket options for the e46 radios. There are some very nice and affordable Android head units for this car that almost look factory but give you everything the modern cars have as well.
I'm not sure how BMW did it but when I got my 325i I was really surprised by how quick it felt. It's not fast, but it pulls you along with a certain haste. It's by all means fast enough. Which is strange because it's rated for 180hp (crank I assume) while the '09 Fusion with the i4 I replaced it with was rated for 160. I don't know what BMW did but it feels like way more than just a 20hp bump. Side note: don't by those first gen fusions with the auto 4 cylinder. I've never driven such a soulless machine. It's not that it's too slow (it is) but the car seems like it was overlooked in every single way. And worst of all is the throttle response. The fly by wire in the thing is so fucking bad you'd get stuck in snow on flat ground because you either get 100% of the throttle or none of it, totally independent of what you're doing with your foot, and never consistently it was fucking maddening. My bmw is pretty nice though.
I love the E46 Body style, i had a 05 330ci 6peed so yes they started putting 6 speeds in 04+ for the 330. 6-10k thats wayyy overpriced for a 00, i got my 05 for 4k granted it had higher milage (170k) but the car was a perfect 1 owner vehicle and was meticulously well taken care off. they also upgraded the steering and suspension 03+. the 2000s also have very light steering btw so if your looking for one i say aim for 04+ they also added LED tails light which look better. I absolutely hate those orange side pieces in the headlights and taillights.
This is probably the most chill dude I have ever seen

Nice car and a nice price too! These one takes are awesome btw matt!
Matt, your Chris Harris impression was spot on lol
Should get a sponsorship with Michelin. From watching all these one takes, i've decided to get myself a pair and I'm sure I'm not the only one.
E46 3-Series is the best one of them all in my opinion, especially the M3 in that awesome blue paint !
This is a cool guy, reminds me of the James Franco character in Spring Breakers

All ZHP (2003+)
330i / xi sedans from 2003.5? Maybe just 04+
I'm fairly certain that the 330ci got the 6 speed mid-2004 model year.
I just sold my 323ci for 1300. It gave me a lot of problems but it was still an awesome car. Loved how the car would corner.
Got the same color on our 330ci, I love that dark blue on the e46
To upgrade the radio you should take a look at Dynavin n6. They are made to look good in a E46
Cool car, I had one of these a few years ago. Hate I let it go. the e46 330i ZHP (performance package) came with a 6speed ZF as well as a handful of non ZHP 330i ZSP (Sport Package)
What a great car. I drive a 330ci, love it. Would recommend to anyone interested in buying
A clean E46 is one of the best Used Cars EVER!
Nice car!! I have a '00 328ci. The later E46 330s came with a 6 speed
I have a 330ci ZHP, it has a 6spd. The later 330i's also have 6 speeds. Excellent daily driver, that's why I have one!
hay Matt i dig your glasses but i cant find them anywhere online. What brand or where would a guy get a pare?
boom shaka laka... now there's a phrase I haven't heard in a long time
Bob Last it sounds very jewish
That's such a steal for a solid E46.
TheSmokingTire love this bmw but I think I saw your fox body in the background... when are we going to see it?? I'm excited!
Matt, are you going to make like 'normal' reviews again too? I really liked your reviews of pretty much any car.
TurboDifferent What do you mean by normal reviews?
TheSmokingTire Like your lexus is350 video or porsche 911 991c2s. You know, press cars.
These videos like this e46 328i are fun too, but I mean you really was one of the (if not the) best out there who reviewed brand new cars.
Best wishes
How are second hand e46s as far as major repairs?
when you replaced the steering pump did you go for the Luk LF 20 or the LF 30? I have the exact same car as you and I'm not sure which one to go with.
Please tell me you have an e36 m3 and an Audi b5 s4 stg 3 to review!!!
There not super sports lol! Matt what's your favorite tire????
Also whats great about this 328i is that you can take the intake from the m54b30, replace it with the stock one and gain power similar to 330i.
You can't be serious ?
+Lanre Oladejo check it out yourself, google is your friend "328i intake mod"
+trytthisnow calm down man. Could t find info. That's why I'm here.
Can you advise if the 3.0l engine with swap perfectly into the 323ci?
+Lanre Oladejo probably not perfectly, since different exhaust and Ecu, but it can be done.
*+ Lanre Oladejo don't put 3.0 its useless you wont feel the difference because the car is too heavy even for 3.0liters*
Matt try to find a 06-08 Lexus is350. Those things are quick as hell and fun to drive!
I'd rather pay a bit more in upkeep than drive a boring Honda or Toyota.
is this guy high?
Light Yagami Look at his shirt, ofc he's high :P
Light Yagami Why did you take Ryuzaki's life? Poor L was just trying to serve some justice lol...
VQSeries But so does he !
mik8990 True... But a very twisted version of it lol
"Let's go for a driiiiiiive" lol
Yo Matt why aren't u doing any more vids on ur fox body stang ?
NOICE!!!! Breakfast and One Takes!!
I've been considering buying an E46 330Ci Manual recently and have always wondered what Matt thought about them. This kind of answers that for me. Cheers!
***** not true, steering was based on month/week of manufacturing. All coupes had m-suspension, which undoubtedly is much better drive than standard.
Hey Matt have you ever drivin an srt 4 of you have what's your opinion on them ?
freestyle589 I drove one a long time ago. I remember it being a really fast POS. Have another one on the schedule.
TheSmokingTire what about the cobalt ss/tc?
***** also, a very fast POS. Fantastic drivetrain, that turbo ecotec motor. They couldn't have put it in a pair of worse cars. (Cobalt / HHR)
How is the foxbody mustang going?
I have the same car (328i 5MT), but its the sedan model. Looking to retire it as my daily driver soon and keep it around as a toy. It's mostly stock, so I'd like to do some upgrades, mainly suspension. Anybody have some recommendations?
hope you get to drive an e28 some day :)
I love these cars. such a pleasant package that just works so well together to supply a great driving experience. got my 2002 330ci for $3900 and have loved every second of ownership. just sucks when it comes to purchasing parts. If you're ever in Ohio, you can drive mine if you want to compare models lol.
I'm thinking about buying e46. But I can't decide if to buy 330i over 328i. Can you give me advise? Sorry for my english (from Czech Republic)
What I have found out though, is as long as you don't get too exotic of a model, you will have a reliable car.
rcowner153
factory cats are very expensive no matter what car.
Shamal Stegeman If you can't find a 330i, the 328i is a valid substitute for sure.
Shamal Stegeman the 325 was actually tested to be more powerful than the 328 and with much better fuel economy, thats why i bought one ;)
TheSmokingTire right on
Marshall Knutson budget is a little tight but the hardest part is finding a decent one with the sport package.
Jerem Plstro its great mate
Matt whenever your in long island, ny again drive my slow Baru wrx, I'll show you some twisties
6:50 You can buy a ton of those plates in Norway to any bimmer model, not a problem at all to find. Probably because it's a lot of bimmers here.
the e46 330zhp came with a 6 speed, along with a few other goodies over the regular 330
Hey Matt, have you ever been to Cape Cod, Massachusetts?
Krellow yes, I used to go to Nantucket all the time when I was a kid.
Cool! I live on Cape and I love it but the winter is miserable in New England
I'm on the fence about buying one of these now....
anything straight 6 is awesome for power, mpg, and reliability.
How do you buy a car like this for 600?
***** I know right? I don't know about the going rate for these in the States or in Europe but where I live you are looking at at least 12,000 for something like this.
Well that's shitty to hear. Is it difficult to buy a clean one?
BileMonkey 323i's are also very cheap in Belgium, they have bad drinking habits...
BileMonkey Wow that's not too bad. E46s are expensive as balls over here and if it has problems even more expensive. One of my friends had an E30 and that was horrible to fix anything.
Being blessed lol or in a poker game
I used to have an e46 330i with the ///M sports package back in high school. First car I ever bought with my own money. Stupid high school me totaled it about 6 months later and now every time i see an e46 I get a little sad. Beautiful car though Sam
Got a 320i of 10/2000 m54b22
Such a nice car
I wish i had a 328ci, i love the m52
Unfortunately it has such a big problem with the rear
what's the problem?
@@bimmerapologist rear subframe cracks
@@Krezo200 oh and did this plague all E46s?
@@bimmerapologist until 2001, and mostly bigger six cylinder engines
Awesome car review, beautiful car. Although, I have to disagree with you regarding the aftermarket options for the e46 radios. There are some very nice and affordable Android head units for this car that almost look factory but give you everything the modern cars have as well.
Rogue Ninja This was filmed before those came out
Put a Dynavin GPS head unit (GPS/radio/bluetooth) in the radio slot.
My brother and I have the same car and they're awesome cars I plan to never get rid of mine.
Damn, Matt. It's like 4 in the morning .
These definitely aged nicely, or maybe im a sucker for a clean E46 :D
I love the E46 Body style, i had a 05 330ci 6peed so yes they started putting 6 speeds in 04+ for the 330. 6-10k thats wayyy overpriced for a 00, i got my 05 for 4k granted it had higher milage (170k) but the car was a perfect 1 owner vehicle and was meticulously well taken care off. they also upgraded the steering and suspension 03+. the 2000s also have very light steering btw so if your looking for one i say aim for 04+ they also added LED tails light which look better. I absolutely hate those orange side pieces in the headlights and taillights.
