  • 2023 Apr 30, Sun, 70°F -- Today, we explored the old town (Ciutat Vella) of Barcelona, and covered El Raval and Barri Gothic in one day. Barcelona is huge and to cover the entire Ciutat Vella in full details in one day is not feasible. The four districts -- Raval, Barri Gòtic, “Sant Pere, Santa Caterina i la Ribera” and Barceloneta -- together form the district Ciutat Vella. A city with thousands years of history, Barcelona is a wanderer's paradise. Every turn in every corner, there's so much to see with endless discoveries to be made. El Raval is a cultural melting pot with immigrants from almost everywhere. It's a NO-GO for tourists, but this district is gentrifying slowly but surely, with MACBA Museum and Center of Contemporary Culture of Barcelona leading the way. Barri Gòtic or Gothic Quarter is the birthplace of Barcelona. Here, the Romans built their city called Barcino; the Christians built their cathedral and churches; and 'though not by choice, the Jews segregated/congregated within the walls of the church. This self-propelled walk is a history learning moment forever to be cherished.
