  • In this episode of Canonball we discuss "Of Plymouth Plantation" by William Bradford, which was completed in 1651. I said 1647 because that is when the record of the colony ends, but he continued writing for a few years after that. Some of the information about what happened to the passengers on the Mayflower dates to 1651.
The cover art for this episode is a painting called "Pilgrims Going To Church" by George Henry Boughton that was completed in 1867.

Great video and commentary!!! Yes, the Indians were colonizing and inslaving each other before Jamestown and Plymouth.

Ive been doing research on Plymouth as a personal interest and this was the best of any of the videos i watched. Unlike many youtube videos that make sweeping generalizations and historically revision the past, youve brought a scholarly narrative of the subject. Ill definetly have to read the whole book!... BTW, Ive never heard Bradford's commentary on the failures of communistic society that he saw first hand. That was fascinating and demonstrates how wise Bradford was.

Thanks a lot for listening! I'm glad it was useful. I try to stick to what can be more clearly known in studying history, and even if that ends up being a more limited picture, it's more reliable. The Plymouth Colony is of course a fascinating topic and if you're studying it generally, it's definitely worth reading the whole book.

WOW. This was wonderful. I like your explaining that conquest started with a stone in hand.

It sounds like your family was just about there when they landed. Someday I'll have to do some more reading about Jamestown. Thanks for listening.

I'm descended from John Alden & Priscilla Mullins and just this year found out that my best friend since 1980, his Mayflower ancestor was Williiam Bradford and those guys both signed The Mayflower Compact and worked together when Bradford was Governor!! Is that cosmic or what?!!!

So your ancestors were buddies too 400 years ago. That's really cool.

I recently found out that Bradfords second wife Alice Carptenter Southworth is my 10th great grandma... meaning, I suppose, that William Bradford is my 10th step great grandfather...

Very cool. I just looked and saw that Alice was married previously to one Edward Southworth, who died, and then she married Bradford, so I guess your direct ancestor from that time must have been Edward. The lore in my family is that one branch are descendants of John Howland, whom Bradford mentions briefly in one passage of his diary, but I have never traced the genealogy to confirm it. It is always interesting to see these family connections to history, of which there must be more than we are generally aware.

@@vollrathpublishing Thats correct, my geneology traces back to Alice Bradford's son from her first marriage, Constant Southworth. His daughter Mercy Southworth married Samuel Freeman... my grandmother is a Freeman of that line. So Im related to all the Freemans of that lineage.
