    Too many people tell me that because they are short that they cannot swim as fast as a taller person. Well here is proof to the contrary. Optimally speaking taller people have an advantage in pulling more water / kicking with more power BUT I have seen many guys well below 6ft in height swim 6-8 min zone on the 500yd combat swimmer stroke / side stroke. ALL TECHNIQUE and CONDITIONING...
    We are NOT trying to make Olympians - we are trying to get people proficient in the water for Spec Ops jobs
    Combat Swimmer Stroke - breakdown. Kick off the wall, double arm pull, CSS stroke cycle of Pull, breathe, kick, glide. www.stewsmithfitness.com/blog...
    Top arm pull is a freestyle arm pull.
    Bottom arm is more similar to a breast stroke scull (not a full stroke to your side) BREATHE during the bottom arm pull.
    Turn to breathe - do not lift your head up to breathe.
    Kick can either be a scissor kick or a breast stroke kick BUT when swimming with fins you need to learn scissor / flutterkicks.
    Kick hard / pull hard = glide fast.

    You don't have to be a competitive swimmer to ace Spec Ops Training, you just need to be good and comfortable in the water.

    what about guys who are 5'3" to 5'4"? I always get around 9-10 mintues
    And my technique is superb. I have been doing this stroke for over 8 years.
    I think a certain height does play a role; there is no question about it!
    Mr. Smith, I even have your official VHS tape from back in the 1990's. This is how I officially learned it before it ever made it on youtube for free.

      Green Bear I agree, I've been practicing, and I've pretty much have a really excellent technique. Great push off, great glide, great top arm pull breathe no sharking, great scissor kick and glide for 2 seconds and pull on 3 the whole way and I still end up getting a high 8s or super low 9s mins...

      Likely conditioning. But yes - obviously your biology will determine how good you will be in anything. There are not many basketball players your height but many wrestlers. Yes most swimmers are tall but you can still be a great swimmer while short - just perhaps not world class level - WHICH you do not need to be in Spec Ops Swimming anyway...

    Mr Smith, thank you for those very helpful videos. I have some issues on CSS. I have nobody who can personally help me to learn this technique, so I have to learn via vids and critiques. Now I can do 500 meters in 11'30" and 25 m in 7-9 strokes. I'm not taller than this guy, but I don't know how to reduce the time and strokes per 25 m.
    Do you have any suggestion for a workout in the swimming pool?
    Could I send you a video of me swimming? Where?
    Thank you very much!

    yes - the whole "sharking" of the arm is an easy fix once you realize you are doing it. I like keeping my elbow on my ribs with the top arm recovery to avoid the sharking DQ

    • @StewSmith182
      @StewSmith182  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @monkey man not really. He just does. But he is a collegiate swimmer so he is in shape to do so. 50s50yd does not require it. 42-45s may though

    The extra kicks help him relax his chest so he can breathe easier. Also his elbow leaves the water

      Does not matter. Easy fix IF called on it.

    He did pretty well, but I thought if your elbow came up high like that, it was called shark finning.

    Thanks for all the info/videos! Quick question, should you avoid the flutter kicking (after the the scissor) if possible? Meaning, what's worth more: conserving energy(but still a decent time) or a faster time but a greater expenditure.

    • @StewSmith182
      @StewSmith182  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well - it depends on your cardio capabilities. It will expend more energy. I personally like to get 25yd in 4-5 strokes gliding vs kicking. I have found that extra kicking tires me more and my pace decreases / time increases per lap - it also affects my running of the 1.5 mile timed run at the end of the PST. I think it is all about conservation of energy with optimal form for speed.

    • @oslob4244
      @oslob4244 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Stew Smith Thank you for the quick response! I recently learned the css; I'm still making adjustments to my form, hoping to get to that 4 stroke 25yd without flutter kicking--been forcing myself to just glide(it's about 6 strokes now).

    Mr. Smith, I am currently swimming a 500 yd CSS in 10:50. I would like to get down to 9:00. I posted a video on my channel for your review. Could you critique it please? Thank you.

    Sharking - keep your elbow on your ribs during recovery. Easy fix once you realize you are doing it. I have seen worse sharking.

    I have found that small flutter kicks towards the end of my glide phase right as I'm pulling my first arm, helps me stay parallel to the water and it feels easier for me to keep my momentum going then if I try swimming CSS without the flutter kicks. I find that when I try to take out the flutter kicks (in experimenting with energy efficiency), I find that my legs start to sink pretty quickly during the glide phase, and I have to fight harder and spend more energy to stay parallel using only a single scissor kick and my arms. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but just something that I have noticed for myself.

    • @StewSmith182
      @StewSmith182  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Make sure you are not popping up your head too much as feet drop are usually a product of lifting head out of the water. Efficiency is key and helpful for the FULL PST (not just the swim)

    • @StewSmith182
      @StewSmith182  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are doing the elementary side stroke - nothing wrong with that. How fast can you do it for 500yds? The CSS is typically faster and more efficient BUT does require some swim conditioning compared to the elementary side stroke. Both ways are fine. There is no THE ONLY way to swim it. You could also do breast stroke if you prefer.

    Mr.smith, do you see a direct correlation between lower swim times equaling lower run times in an official pst? Trying to get my run time under 9 from a 9:20. Current pr swim in a 50m offical PST is 9:15. Thank you.

    • @StewSmith182
      @StewSmith182  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Adrian Gonzalez Sometimes it is related to cardio strength BUT usually it is more technique in the water and good conditioning for running. But you need conditioning in both to break 9 minutes.

      Ellis Nickson is the swim stroke used by Navy SEALs and other maritime special operations units. It is not about swimming in Speedo's looking at a black line at the bottom of the pool. It is different.

      at 5'6-5'7 150LB- 170LB low BF. Bone density is a big factor here. I look the same from 150LB- 170LB at 10% BF.

    • @YeNZeC

      @buddy bud guy who is spewing nonsense ?
      The guy in that pool weighs 150-170LB.
      But bone density is a factor. You can be 150LB and same dimentions as 170LB, the difference is heavier bones.
