  • Historical events, thanks to RTE and those who agreed to take part in this video. For more info / questions email mi6gnp@gmail.com. Credit to RTE TV who broadcasted this in the 1990's. It was never seen again until I discovered it (by chance) on an old VHS video cassette which belonged to my late parents.

My great grandfather (Samuel McReynolds) was the chief electrical engineer on the Princess Victoria. Unfortunately he passed away in the disaster. I only found out about him 2 years ago
Seafaring must run in the family because I'm a maritime engineer(electrical) as well.
    Thanks for putting this together.

My Great Grandfather Thomas Morton Jr went down on this ship at only 27yr leaving my great Grandmother Agnes a widow with a young daughter! They gave her very little in terms of compensation because I quote “it would make her too desirable for men to take advantage off if she were to become a wealthy widow”
Thank you for uploading this as I have nothing to remember him by and this gives me a bit more information of the events that led to his death. I wish I could have spoken to a survivor who worked in shorts to find out more about him! Thanks again!

@DannyBradley Sorry for your Family's loss.
There is a well researched book about this disaster {One of the men in the film wrote it} called ''Death in the North Channel'' by Steven Cameron.
Definitely worth buying if you have any interest in this Disaster.
Ebay or Abe books sell it second hand.

I never knew about this grim disaster, despite living in UK..It deserves to be much more widely known about.
I had heard a radio programme featuring Survivors, but to actually see footage of the ship, and to see contemporary footage of the Irish Sea in all it's fury really makes it seem crazy that the ferry was allowed to depart. RIP all who Perished, and to the Radio Operator David Broadfoot who was a true Hero.
It must have been utter Hell aboard that ferry.
It shows the last of the ''Oldskool'' Manners, in that the Men arranged for the Women and Children to be put into a lifeboat first....But the Sea was so tempestuous the Lifeboat was turned over.
It is said even today that survivors at Sea are likely to be young, fit men. I can understand why, now.
    Those Poor Souls.
    Thanks for uploading it.
The ''Footnote''' is interesting, too.....And so believable.
Rest in Peace all who Perished 🙏

My Granny's cousin, Woolsey, died on this ship. He was coming home to Carrick for a visit home as he worked for shorts. He was only in his early 20's at the time, very sad.

Hello Sammie, Let me first say I'm very sorry your family lost a loved one in this terrible tragedy. A lot of lessons were learned from it which has made shipping safer but sadly it won't bring those good people back. I probably wouldn't be here if my Father took that actual sailing. I guess you watched the final extra part at the end with my own personal connection? I was happy to find this documentary on an old VCR Video cassette because the World needs to about this and future generations not even born yet.
I really hope this documentary was helpful to you and everyone that sees it in understanding what happened. Sad as it is but at least it is now here on TH-cam for a long, long time to come. All I ask in return is for everyone to spread the word of my channel, give my video's a 'LIKE' and subscribe. It keeps me motivated and even though I make my own videos about all kinds of things I still have a lot of old VCR Video cassettes to check from my late Fathers collection. I have no idea what I will find next!! Another reason to subscribe so that you won't miss out in what's next. Take Care and Thank You for stopping by, Greg GNP👍

I watched it the whole way through. He actually came home a week early to surprise his mum so wasn't supposed to be on that sailing. I've always been obsessed with the sea and shipwrecks since I was wee and I wonder is it because my Granny told me about her cousin when I was very young. I'm very glad that this helped improve safety on roro ferries but such a pity it took such a tragedy to do so. Thank you for sharing this as there is very little information out there about it. I actually contacted the BBC last year about the documentary they made about the Princess Victoria I think it was called Home truths (things don't happen to boats like this). I would love to see the wreck footage from 1992 which is nowhere to be found. Sadly they never got back to me. It's an important part of the Heritage of Northern Ireland and Scotland and more info should be out there!

Sammie, So sorry for your loss. It's a staggeringly awful disaster, but what is amazing, is how the survivor like the Cook worked on Ships after this.. The Irish Sea is a ferocious bit of ocean. The Princess Victoria really should never have sailed that day, ferries back then were tiny compared to the behemoths we have now.

A very moving account of this almost forgotten tragedy, respectfully presented. I get the feeling that if this sinking had taken place is the English Channel it would have generated an enormous story. Being an NI/Scots event always pushes these incidents down the pecking order & it still happens to this day. RIP to the victims of this disaster.

I think this needs to be seen in the context of the events of 31st January/1st February 1953 storm surge event. Many lives where lost along the east coast of England & several trawlers as well as the Princess Victoria disaster. The whole series of disasters is not really known well. Its largely forgotten. Which is very sad. The natural disaster affected the Netherlands and Belgium as well.

I had never heard of this, and I lived near Glasgow so it was local. I may have been a child at the time, but I have sailed the Clyde and been involved in diving so this sort of thing would normally have been known to me. I have no idea why this isn't more widely known about.

@@Roscoe.P.Coldchain There is stuff online about the Disaster, and children are described, fleetingly.
In one, a mother was battling up a the gangway against the storm to board the ship at Stranraer with a child in her arms, and another a kindly stewardess is trying to put an adult lifejacket on a frantic child, and another , a wonderful young man {also crew} was last seen with a baby in his arms.
      None of these Souls survived.
One wished that one could turn back the clock, thinking about it now brings tears to my eyes.

I researched from Wikipedia. Great place to find all kinds of history, both good and bad. Sad so many died on that day. But that was back then, when they didn't have the type of safety and equipment to deal with bad weather and in case the ship were to sink, the lifeboats and safety gear to survive in the water.

    • @Oakleaf700
      @Oakleaf700 ปีที่แล้ว +1

''Death in the North Channel'' by Cameron, a well researched book about the tragedy and the people on board says there were enough lifeboats, but when a ship begins to list to one side, launching them is impossible sometimes.
The main failings were the stern doors being too weak, and the scuppers on the car deck couldn't cope with the tons of angry sea water that poured in to the ship.
You are right that 'Safety' is improving , but at the cost of lives to learn those painful lessons.
Princess Victoria wasn't permitted to be on the Fishguard~Rosslare route as it was longer and stormier, it was thought that such a 'Short' crossing would be safe for a ship with a weaker stern.
      Crazy.
      🙏
