1991 Williams FW14 Formula One [F1] driven by Riccardo Patrese - Historic Minardi Day Imola 2019

  • The Italian pilot Riccardo Patrese got back into the cockpit of his 1991 Williams FW14 Formula 1, 28 years after his last car drove. This beautiful moment took place at the fourth edition of the 2019 Historic Minardi Day at the Imola racetrack. Although for only a few laps, with a "demo" car with short gear ratios for the Santerno racetrack, the Paduan driver gave over 15,000 spectators strong emotions, returning to the early 90s where the car designed by Adrian Newey and driven by Mansell and Patrese came in second place in the 1991 world championship and in first place the following year. It's the car with which the Italian driver has achieved the greatest successes together with the FW14B evolution. The single-seater is fitted with a 3500 cm³ Renault RS3 V10 engine with valve distribution with pneumatic return and variable height intake trumpets. In a recent interview, Patrese said that was the car with which he had the greatest feeling, still lacking the massive and sophisticated electronics of the FW14B evolution.

    Il pilota italiano Riccardo Patrese è sceso nuovamente nell'abitacolo della sua Williams FW14 Formula 1 del 1991 dopo 28 anni dall'ultima volta che aveva guidato la vettura. Questo bellissimo momento è avvenuto alla quarta edizione dell'Historic Minardi Day 2019 presso l'autodromo di Imola. Anche se per soli pochi giri, con una vettura "demo" dai rapporti del cambio corti per l'autodromo del Santerno, il pilota padovano ha regalato agli oltre 15.000 spettatori forti emozioni, tornando ai primi anni 90 dove la vettura progettata da Adrian Newey e pilotata da Mansell e Patrese arrivò al secondo posto nel mondiale targato 1991 ed al primo posto l'anno successivo. E' la vettura con cui il pilota italiano ha raggiunto i maggiori successi assieme all'evoluzione FW14B. La monoposto monta un motore Renault RS3 V10 da 3500 cm³ con distribuzione a valvole con richiamo pneumatico e tromboncini di aspirazione ad altezza variabile. In una recente intervista Patrese ha dichiarato che questa è stata la vettura con cui ha avuto il maggior feeling, priva ancora della tanta e sofisticata elettronica dell'evoluzione FW14B.     Absolutely lovely. Imola looks like a great place to spend a sunny day watching these classics. Sounds a little to my motorbike trained ears that the clutch is slipping slightly on the upshift, which is weird on a semi-automatic transmission as I wouldn't have thought the system would operate the clutch at all.

      Imola and Mugello are the best circuits in Italy. This Williams has just been restored and even the electronics in gearboxes are very conservative, all to avoid stressing gearbox/clutch and engine.

      Si, si è proprio spaventato, con fiammata annessa, si vede bene il riflesso. Concordo, l'epoca dei V10 e V12 è stato l'apice della F1, altri tempi, altre auto, altre gare, altri piloti...proprio un'altro mondo.

      ぼくもパトレーゼが一番好きでした。
      ブーツェンとの時からなぜかパトレーゼが好きで好きで(笑)
      たしかマンセルのチャンピオンのためか(?)、パトレーゼがマンセルに首位を譲ったレースがあったけど、まだ若かりし子供だった僕にはチームの事情なんてわからずに、フランク・ウィリアムズとマンセルを恨んでいました(笑)
      パトレーゼかっこいい。

    Un grande ringraziamento a Giancarlo Minardi,grande appassionato di motori e soptattutto F1 che ci regala gni anno questo bellissimo evento dove puoi toccare con mano e sentire gli "odori" dell'olio e della bemzina delle monoposto vere di F1 e dove non c'e' confronto tra la pulizia aerodinamica delle monoposto d'epoca con quella alla Mazinga Z e Batman di oggi ......dove il pilota non era "teleguidato" dai box e sul volante c'era solo.lo.stemma Momo o Personal,dove il pilota doveva lasciare il volante,togliere gas,frenare pesantemente e cambiare marcia e se sbagliava spaccava il cambio e non tutti quei manettini del.kaiser dove nemmeno il pilota sa a cosa servono!!! Oggi non e' piu' la F1 di un tempo? Peggio x ....noi! Anzi,x la F1...!!! Noi ci vediamo al Minardi Day....!!!!!

      @@manugahan1863 Sono daccordo. Mi dispiace perchè sembriamo "inguaribili romantici" di quegli anni, però è vero, non c'è niente da fare, è stato il decennio migliore, come per me lo è stato tra gli anni '50 e '60, l'epoca d'oro delle carrozzerie e del design italiano.

      Io ho 54 anni ed ho vissuto intensmente gli anni '80 ma anche oggi molti giovani si ispirano a quell'epoca ed anzi a tal proposito voglio menzionare una nuova rivista di auto d'epoca che si chiama "YoingTimer" e che s'interessa particolarmente degli anni '80 ....oltre alle note Ruoteclassiche,Auto d'Epoca,Automobilismo d'Epoca.....!!!!!!

    Lo strumento per accendere la macchina come si chiama, e dove viene messo, per far sì che il motore parte?

      Quello strumento, nelle vecchie monoposto, si chiama avviatore. Nelle formula 1 non c'è il motorino di avviamento come nelle auto tradizionali per risparmiare peso e spazio. Viene inserito nell'albero motore e questo permetterà la messa in moto.       This 1991 model was not equipped with it; the active suspension was introduced in 1992 with the evolutionary model called FW14B.

      No problem with the gearbox. The car practically did the first few laps when it rode after a long restoration and the electronics in the gearbox were also very conservatively calibrated.

      Eu concordo completamente. Além disso, nesses carros, o fator piloto foi decisivo. O mesmo não pode ser dito dos carros de hoje. Até agora temos sido relegados a ver ultrapassagens no tempo que passa do pit stop. Isso é realmente deprimente...

      FW14にはアクティブなサスペンションはありませんでした。 それらはfw14bで導入されました

    91年のここイモラでパトレーゼは予選で2位、セナの隣にきましたね。決勝は雨、滑りやすい路面でパトレーゼは抜群のスタートでトップとなりましたね。もともとウイリアムズのマシンはトラクションがいいので有名でしたがそのマシンの利点を生かしトップにしかし、パトレーゼは本当に運がなくピットインしたがトラブル、ギヤが入ったままなかなくなおらず。前年は勝っただけに期待されましたが残念。結果マクラーレンの1_2。ティレルも全滅。

      Non è colpa di Patrese ma come è stata riprogrammata la cambiata di quella vettura, all'epoca appena restaurata e quindi ogni componente è stato tarato in modo conservativo.

      Si, lo stesso Patrese intervistato ha detto che comunque l'auto è come una "demo" car, appena uscita dal restauro e con un cambio troppo corto per Imola. Ma era qui per questo magico momento, 18 anni che non saliva sulla Williams, non era certo il giorno o l'evento per cercare chissà quale tempo sul giro. Già vederlo alla guida della Williams FW14 è stato epico 👍🏻

      The car had just been restored, and therefore these were practically the first laps on the track. They also asked Patrese to drive calmly; even the gear ratio was not the right one for a fast track like Imola. Despite this, after so many years, it was nice to see Patrese on Williams again.

      Penso che ricordi male, se fai una ricerca dei risultati ottenuti nella stagione 1991 Patrese non andò certo male, anzi, ma non ci fu nessuna schiacciante superiorità, Mansell vinse 5 gare contro le 2 di Riccardo.

      @@Italiansupercarvideo Penso che ricordi male tu.... riguarda bene le qualifiche... e ricorda quando Patrick Head mise Riccardo sulla macchina di Mansell.... se vuoi approfondiamo. Senza nessuna polemica, sia chiaro. Mansell prese bastonate da tutti i suoi compagni di squadra, da De Angelis a Piquet, da Prost a Berger.... Cercò addirittura di sbattere Prost nel muro al via a Estoril e probabilmente gli fece perdere anche un mondiale.

      @@Italiansupercarvideo Lungi da me la polemica, per carità, io quegli anni li ho vissuti (purtroppo) in diretta perchè ho un'età, seguo il motorsport dal 1980/81, e sicuramente Mansell è stato uno dei piloti più sopravvalutati, così come Vettel ad esempio. Ma sono tantissimi gli italiani che si sono bruciati perchè non avevano una politica dietro che li spingesse... De Angelis le prime gare andava più di Senna, dovettero dargli i motori da qualifica spompati usati da Senna la gara precedente per farlo stare dietro ad esempio. Ecco perchè andò da Ecclestone... Patrese era uno che se la giocava alla pari con un certo Piquet (quello vero) vedi stagione 1982... Ivan Capelli aveva una mcchina completamente diversa da quella di Alesi (che alla fine non vinse un tubo).... Diciamo che è un discorso troppo lungo e complesso da fare sui commenti del Tubo. E' sempre un picare per me parlare con appassionati, sia chiaro. Un abbraccio, Rino.

      A collector owns the car; I think Patrese drove this one because there were no others. Certainly, if he could have driven his car, it would have been the best possible, in the absence of this and Mansell, as his teammate at the time, Patrese was the right person to let him drive.

      Believe me, you're wrong, this pilot came second in 1991 in the F1 world championship driving this car ... he knows exactly how to do it. The problem is not the pilot but the car that has just been restored and has only done a few demonstration laps, even the gear ratios were not right for the Imola track

      There's clearly something amiss with the gearbox. It should automatically throttle off per change. The driver doesn't need to take his foot off the throttle.

      That tech was still being explored at that time. I figure there is some engineer that designed it that is not available now. Most of the cars had manual shifters and clutches at that time. I still want to drive the damn thing! As an aircraft mechanic fixing it right would be fun.
