Wow, the bodywork is very good on that old girl. Lovely to see it getting some attention. I remember when these were literally on every street.

You can get pencils made from recycled plastic shavings - just as shapeable for repairs like you've done on the mirror, but won't ever rot away.

I had a MK2 1.6GL in early 1988 as a company car, I was the second driver as it was a 1986 D registered car: rev counter, 5 speed gearbox, manual but heated door mirrors and a flip-up glass sunroof. - I had arrived as a 24 year old service engineer! That car took me from Devon to Scotland over a year and many miles, totally reliable and geared for 120 mph. It was fastest in 4th but at 70 on the motorway in 5th was back then a very refined experience- very skittery on local roads with pot holes, it felt jittery on the bumps but out on the open road very engaging - the Sierra was much more composed at low speeds but the Cavalier seemed to drive better on the open road. I still have very fond memories of that Cavalier -

Enjoyed the pencils trick, if you wanted a really secure mirror I would have used epoxy resin around the edges rather than double sided tape…or what I have used in past is wood glue as it holds enough to stay in place but can be removed when needed.

I've owned a few MK2 Cavs back in the 1990s. My 2nd Cav (TVH 792X) was identical to KAR except for the colour. I think mine was Reed Green. I'd have another in a hearbeat if I had the money and space.

So true about the tailgate struts, mine failed due to age the replacements I got are so strong, I’m going to have to get the same ones I think 🤔 what I should have done is kept the old original ones and sent them off to SGS engineering as they can refurbish them, oh well we live and learn. Great video, I love the tinkering videos, I don’t care about how poorly mine do 😅 I enjoy sharing the story. Cheers.

Well done Sion a great first video on the Cavalier it has been lifted a lot already and the engine sounds sweet as I remember my dads sounding back in the day
I remember some of these had an auto-choke on the carb and you had to depress the accelerator when starting from cold
Dad had the issue you had on his astra and nova and fuel starvation was the cause in his case
Those sun visors could be a pain from new I remember one of my dads exploded in the summer on holiday we found glass all over the place so an unexpected trip to the Vauxhall garage on holiday lol 😆 keep up the hard work hope this and the astra stay on the fleet it takes me back 40 years seeing them to my childhood would love one now

I grew up in Pennsylvania in the 70s & early 80s,moved to England in '86. I hadn't realized there was no Ascona estate sold in mainland Europe, though.
