  • In this short video, we talk about fig suckers! We cover how they impact fig tree growth as part of overall fig tree growth as well as what your options are when it comes to fig tree suckers.
Firstly, suckers come from the base of a fig tree and emerge as a shoot off the existing fig root base. Once it starts growing it develops its own set of roots, but it is still attached to the main plant. This results in shared water and nutrition with the parent plant often suffering the most.
Secondly, suckers can be used as part of your overall fig tree structure or need to be removed. If you want a bushy, multi-stemmed plant then you can leave your suckers and they will all develop into their own stems. Then, as the plant continues to grow you can prune out suckers to not have over-crowding at the base. If you want to maintain a more tree-like form then you need to remove all your suckers to maintain the single stem through which all water and nutrients flow.
Thirdly is the option of fig tree propagation from suckers. This is a great additional option to add to your bundle of propagation techniques. All you have to do is dig slightly into the soil to see if your suckers have roots. If they do, cut the sucker out and re-plant it. If not, you can cut the sucker and put it into clean, fresh water and wait for it to root out. You can also place it into slightly moist Coco Peat and wait for the cuttings to root.

If you let them grow a decade or two, they all become as big and as thick as the main trunk. I can't tell which one is the main trunk the previous owner didn't prune and we haven't in 10 years. Only now are we thinking of pruning it.

It would be helpful to see how you extract a sucker from the base of the mother tree.

if the suckers are so vigorous and even produce fruit so quickly, why would we want to remove them?

Suckers usually grow from cuttings that are too long. As the cutting is trying to root and grow it finds it easier to sprout suckers than it does to push the nutrients to the top of the cuttings. The easiest cure for this is to make your cuttings shorter, 6 to 8 inches is usually a good length. No more no less. Learned this from an old Italian Fig Farmer who grew up on a fig farm.

Suckers pushed off from the main stem will root a lot better than a cutting cut off. That node on the end makes roots better than a cut.

I cut off a sucker and planted it in water to grow roots, I think that’s how I did my previous one and I got a little fig tree from it; isn’t that how you get the sucker to grow roots of its own ?

Mine died back due two extreme freeze and I pruned all but one sucker that was the biggest and growing from the base of the original trunk. Was that a mistake and should I have picked one that was growing from the soil? I heard ones that grow from the original trunk won't hold well.

Is that sucker impacting the other's growth or the other's not growing caused suckers to grow? Since this is not grafted, I think suckers are healthier.

Pinch of the new growth on top of each branch. That will cause fig tree to start producing fruit!

Is it possible to root the suckers? Specially those coming from the ground. I took one out, unfortunately it did not have roots attached, I put it into a pot.

Yes. You can bend them over and cover part with dirt. Put a rock on top and itll root

I'm new to fig growing these past 6 months, and I cut the suckers off my new, small fig trees to focus on the one main trunk. I took the suckers and put them in cup of moist perlite & vermiculite, and to my surprise they rooted quite easily in a few weeks. I know have 6 Violette de Bordeaux rooted suckers in little 3 inch pots waiting to get bigger.

@@blessisrael6455 you dont have to. I have had better luck putting them in sand and making sure they dont dry out.
You can propagate them by putting them in water but they can rot.

100% yes, depending on the variety they will put on fruit in the same year. This fig tree in the video has little nodes so we will do a follow up video showing how they develop.

@@TheRustyFig I was wondering because in Roses suckers don't flower and mostly kill the main plant
Till I saw this video I believed that my fig tree was branching, but as you mentioned that to be a sucker I felt worried
Thanks for your response, will be waiting for the update video
