- The Oilers are where they have long expected to be, and the Panthers are where they were last season at this time, which is playing in the Stanley Cup Final. What would you like to happen in the Stanley Cup? What do you think will happen in the Stanley Cup? Bryan Hayes joins SC with Jay Onrait to remind us that what we want to happen isn’t necessarily what we think will happen.
Everyone said the Oilers will miss the playoffs. Everyone said Vancouver will win the series. Everyone said Dallas will win the series. Now everyone's saying Florida will win the finals. Just remember, we're talking the Oilers that were 2-9-1, 31st in the league and over 10 points behind 8th seed in the conference by mid November. They didn't reach a playoffs spot until late January. They are now in the finals
Don't want to be that guy, but everyone said Edmonton would win the Vancouver/Edmonton series... Edmonton is just elite and the best Canadian team this year!

Bruh seriously. Last series everyone was saying Dallas beat the last two Stanley Cup Champs so it would be the Stars by a landslide. That didn't happen. I'm not trying to discredit Florida by any means, but I think the Oilers are more dangerous than people are giving them credit for.
@Julia_Hammels and that means that goalie was bad? Let me remind you in 2006 Oilers had to use their 3rd string goalie, Jussi Markkanen, in the Final vs Carolina and he took them to 7. Never underestimate a teammate because they're not on the starting line.

I dont understand how Bryan can say that the panthers played tougher competition to get to the finals. look at the standing and stats and compare. LA and Tampa, identical, BOS and VAN, identical, RANGER and STARS, identical. the paths for both Oilers and Panthers are extremely similar. in fact i believe VAN was and is a tougher team than BOS and STARS and RANGERS are almost the exact same team in skill and depth. this is going to be a tight series!

Why are these goofs talking about a Selke player and some non-all Star players like Bennett, when what you see on the other side is a generational player in his prime and his sidekick is one of the best playoff performers in NHL HISTORY?? Those direct comparisons are not even valid. The disparity is huge between the top Oiler players and Panther's Top, even if you factor in Matthew TK.

Than I looked at a few stats from the regular season and dude literally has Warren Foegle like numbers but with double the penalty minutes. I guess an important thing to note (its true for the Oilers as well) is that having a bunch of guys who have played together a bunch and can communicate well is almost more important than any stat.
@@karl5428 they are a fantastic team. But the way I see it, they are kind of like Dallas but better defensively compared to offensively. Deep, but lacking in true high end talent. And the talent they have is more focused on defense than offense. Barkov is not an elite two way center. He is an elite defensive center. Bennett is better defensively. No defense can contain the best offense in hockey. And we have been fantastic defensively 5 on 5 and PK this year and postseason. I honestly think the Oilers are the better team and am not sure what people are seeing that favors Panthers beyond experience. Even the path was harder for Oilers. Nucks are much better than Bruins (besides Swayman being special) and Stars are better than Rangers (were supposed to be clear favorites in the playoffs). I think all the analysts are wrong again. McDavid and Drai have another level in them too. And we will see it.

How do you quantify this? How do you measure how badly anyone wants anything? That seems baseless. How do we explain EDM 2006, OTT 2007, PHI 2010, VAN 2011, NJD 2012, NYR 2014, SJS 2016, NSH 2017, BOS 2019, DAL 2020, MTL 2021?

Then why do teams that *haven’t* won recently despite being quite good (Dallas, Carolina, NYR, or going further back, San Jose, Nashville, NYI, etc) also seem susceptible to taking their foot off the gas? It seems like it’s a risk, whether you’ve won a Cup recently or not.
Also, in the last 15 years we’ve seen two back to back winners, one of which has a third Cup in the same span, another 3x winner, and another 2x winner. To this, you might say, “Pittsburgh and Tampa both lost in the Finals before winning” to which I say 2010 was Chicago’s first Final in 18 years, and LA won a single series in 19 years prior to their Cup. So it doesn’t seem accurate to make these claims.
Oilers have proven everyone wrong and I think there the better team more or just as much talent toughness big defense also coached by Paul Coffee one of greatest defenseman ever

As far as a Canadian team not winning for many years, the reality is, the money is not the same the tickets are in Can $ as is the Merch and travel. There is only one Toronto. For instance if you can get decent money in 20 cities in the US you are not going to stay in Winterpeg any longer than you have too, or Ottawa or Calgary. What I'm saying is there is a lot of discrepancies that make the league uneven with respect to Canada vs USA in recruiting and keeping players. Hockey is 2 or 3 or 4th on the list in US. Media is not so hungry for a story good or bad. It matters.
It's really not a knock on Canada not winning a cup in so many years. The Canadian teams are NOT MADE UP OF PLAYERS BORN IN CANADA!! there are a lot more teams in the states vs Canada so the odds are just not great. Get over the Canada thing. Some of the comments sound like a Donald Trump speech. "everyone said". Some in the media and the betting books didn't give Oilers much of a chance. I for one thought that if Oilers wore down some of the older Stars that were big contributors, and McDavid and Draisaitl got going they would be fine. The biggest surprise was Skinner. He was sensational, and played beyond expectations. Folks in TO should take note of how even when he was struggling the Oilers players and bass stood behind him. He rewarded their support.

Can Oilers end narrative? In a word, Nooooo. They haven’t faced a ground and pound team like the Panthers, and the Skinner effect will revert back to his old self. They beat Dallas but never faced the teams the Stars did.
I mean they beat Dallas who beat the last 2 Stanley Cup champions🤷. L.A is one of the most physical teams in the league. Do I think Edmonton pulls it off? Probably not but they've proven us wrong time and time again

Tampa, Boston, NY were not better. I think you could say Oilers faced a better overall team each round, especially Dallas. Dallas was the clear best team in the tournament according to most media and fans. And Vancouver is deeper and more talented than Boston. Tampa is better than LA by a good margin, but haven’t played that much better this year. I’d give Tampa the edge based on experience. But they weren’t great this year. Florida definitely faced better goalies. But not better teams. And Otter was a top 3 goalie until Oilers picked him apart.
Yeah New York and Tampa were 16th and 28th (!!) this season defensively at 5v5. Boston was a great defensive team this year so full credit to Florida, but they were also not the greatest at scoring 5v5. Edmonton will be Florida’s toughest match at 5v5 yet, when accounting for defensive and offense combined.

The ultimate decider I believe is the Panthers 1-3-1. Pressure is continuous. How will goaltending play out? Skinner will need the best games of his life. Unfortunately, Panthers in 6.

Everyone thought Tampa and Boston were not playoff teams at the start of the year. For the most part they were teams carried by goal tending. Same thing with the Rangers. All of those teams are on dimensional, and leaned on a single line to do 85% of the scoring, and one more line to do 80% of the defending.
The Oilers are about to stomp the Panthers. Can't wait.
Florida is a different animal. They were their last year, they have unfinished business. Talk about heart the cats have plenty. Guys that are on the lower tier are playing smothering hockey. Then there is Bob. He has been around along time with highs and lows. Similar to Skinner, this will be a real battle. Over all as much as I would like to see Oilers win the Cup. my money would go to the Cats, simply because they are so disciplined and been there lately. They won't have defensive break downs as often as the Oilers do.

Sure this iteration of the Oilers hasn't made it to a Cup Final til now, but last series everyone was saying Dallas beat the last two Stanley Cup Champions and were gonna SQUASH the Oilers. That didn't happen. Now they're saying Florida has beat some real hard teams...so, what is it? None of the teams in the Eastern Conference won the cup in the last two years, but somehow they're more challenging than the last two Stanley Cup Champions? As a US resident, I don’t any Canadian team to win the Stanley Cup. Florida this year, hopefully Dallas next year. We need US big market teams to win to make hockey more interesting in the US

I think the Oilers are the team of the 2 in the Cup final that can provide the biggest upside surprise.... the Panthers are solid no doubt and consistent.... The Oilers are still in the midst of moving their game to a higher level..... I think the Panthers are in for a huge test. Edmonton's offense is better than Boston , Tampa and the NYR's. And they have the soldiers on the bench to match hits with the Panthers...
