Some viewers have commented on John’s “edginess” in this interview. I have always felt that uncomfortable edge I see in John during this interview. I have a perspective I thought I would share with ya’ll: This was immediately after they went to India. In John’s own words; the Maharishi was one of the many times he had looked for a father figure and was ultimately let down. As I’m sure you all know, John was abandoned by his parents as a little boy. And his father only came back after John was wealthy and famous. As a teenager John was finally beginning to establish a relationship with his mother when she was run over by a car and killed. John had a massive chip on his shoulder as a young man. He carried a lot of bitterness and anger which he expressed so dramatically on his first solo album. By this time in 1968 I believe John was very insecure and lost. Brian Epstein was a father figure (of sorts) and Brian had just died. Very suddenly the full weight of The Beatles business affairs were thrust upon them for the first time. The Maharishi turned out to be a fraud and the entire Beatles empire had become a huge burden. He had just began his affair with Yoko and was leaving his first wife and son. I see John as bitter, angry, insecure and lost in this interview. He talks about all these issues in the Rolling Stone interview he did right after the Beatles broke up. Yoko (by his own account) “saved his life”. That says a lot. For as witty, brilliant and self assured he seemed to be; I think we’re seeing him at his most insecure and unstable in this interview. John was always insecure. In his early Beatle days he hid it with a form of bravado but he had had a lot of tragedy in his life as you have referenced. The tragedy of his mothers death was only 10 years before. He wore that like an open wound. John was a very open guy and always said what he was thinking and that was something he would continue to do. But after the ‘Bigger Than Jesus’ furore of 1966 he became much more guarded when being interviewed. In this interview, they appear to be in a hotel room with just John and Paul and Larry and his crew. John was a little bit more relaxed here but it seemed like he was choosing his comments carefully. Any time Larry asked him a question he found uncomfortable, John made some quip rather than just sit silent. I remember this interview from the first time it aired in 1968 although I have never seen it in full before. I also remember the Newspaper ad which encouraged would-be 'artists' to send their material to Apple that appeared in the British music papers 'New Musical Express (NME) and Melody Maker from around that time. John was the one who was really overly impressed with Alex, but it sounds like at least at this point Paul was a bit taken in also. Even when they realized he couldn't do any of the things he claimed he could, they didn't seem to hold any big grudge against him, as far as I can tell.
I think part of the reason for starting Apple was to 'do something good" in light of the fact they felt so constrained politically. However; it wasn't long before John pulled out most of the stops and started speaking up.
Every time I see this, I can’t help but think that they (or at least Paul) were high. Paul, especially, because he can’t keep from laughing. Also, notice Paul’s top lip. It still appears to be scarred up from his moped accident over 2 years earlier on December 26, 1965. He fell from his moped and chipped a front tooth. He also cut his lip and was left with a scar. They must’ve kept this pretty hush hush because I don’t remember hearing anything about it back then. Of course, nowadays, there’s pictures of his injured mouth back then on the internet and it looks pretty bad.
You're one of the only people who mention Paul's accident. I'm sure you noticed his chipped tooth on the videos for "Rain" and "Paperback Writer". You can tell Paul is trying to hold his mouth so it doesn't show. Thanks for watching!
@@JonBlackstone: I don’t think most people ever knew about Paul’s accident when it actually happened. I know I didn’t. They kept all that stuff about the Beatles very quiet. Of course, there was no Internet back then so there was really no way to find out news unless it was in a newspaper or on TV. The first time I ever heard about Paul’s accident was a few years ago when I saw it on some video on TH-cam. That’s when I looked further into it and found the actual pictures of his face. He was pretty buggered up!
The "ginned up doctor" that did not do such a great job sewing Paul's lip up that night when they knocked on his door at home inspired Rocky Raccoon.i also read an interview of the son of the man that rented the mopeds to Paul. The little boy was there and witnessed it himself. His father kept trying to get Paul to pay attention so he could show him how to properly ride the moped but Paul was not paying attention. I'm sure his father always felt a little like he was at fault somehow.
so amazing to see footage of the two of them when the band was still active. LENNON is obviously loaded out of his mind as he always was at that time but McCARTNEY looks like he mite be too. i know McCARTNEY was smoking alot of weed at that time so there's that but who knows what else. either way amazing footage.
Why would you think someone “cashed in” on this interview video? Cashing in reflects the level of cynicism prevalent among the 50-plus demographic. This is a terrible interview by Larry Kane.
Even then, so many people seemed to forget that part of what marred there India trip was the death of Brian Epstein. I’d say that was one good reason to cut it short.
Well, if John insisterd in also answering the questions asked to Paul, there was no point in both being there. I'm sure he also would have answered the George and Ringo questions too, plus those for Brian and why not Mary Hopkin too. He may be witty, but I suspect he loved hear himself talk that way.
Why do you always see interviews and other clips flipped around so the lettering is backwards on TH-cam? They're shaking hands on the left side- is that a way to avoid copyright laws> hmmn?
Yes, that’s the reason. The Beatles (or Apple) have clamped down so hard it’s next to impossible to find videos that don’t get blocked. They blocked this video before. This is the second time I’ve posted it. Sorry about the confusion. Thanks for watching!
Neither John nor Paul were especially "high" . They were just at the end of the Beetle road. Which was a long and winding road. And Larry was so the lamest interviewer to have had the great fortune to have conducted the last John and Paul interview. Love John and Paul. Can't endorse this interview.
You just know that those two would have, at some point, re-established a personal, if not a working relationship over the course of a future that was never to be because of an assassin's bullets.
Very interesting. The Tonight Show audio is sort of interesting as well, Tallula Bankhead busted John's balls a couple of times, she got in a few zingers. Joe Garagiola was a dud, and it was ridiculous Carson was out of town to do some dinner theater gig.
I love the Beatles, I have always loved them and I will always love them. In this interview though, I see two young men in their mid-twenties, who have grown used to being adored by just everybody and who can afford to do just anything.....like: "Apple"... "give money to becoming artists because you want to help...." what a noble idea. Brian's good common sense/business sense is truly missed there. But at this point in their career, what should they have been afraid of???? Still, neither strikes me as truly mature. And how could you be, in a situation like that..... Pop star, rock star, icon and all..... and no drugs???? I don't see it possible in the kids that they were. Kids who in no matter what state of mind, drugged or not drugged, mature, not mature,....whatever. Their music are hymns and anthems! ❤

If that wasn't Paul, he was the best imitation that ever had. They should have kept him. It wasn't Billy, although Billy shows up later at another event during the same tour.
The REAL James Paul McCartney died in 1966. Billy Shears, a musician already, stepped in after facial surgery, thus the hair growth period. Billy Shears is two inches taller than Paul and he is shown on video saying that he joined the band after it was already formed. So much to know. Yes, Shears did add a lot to The Beatles from 1967 onward, but he is not the real Paul McCartney. He admits it.
@@JonBlackstoneWasn’t Paul on that moped with Peggy Lipton?
@@pattip2788he was with tara browne
How is it you know Paul McCartney smoked a lot of weed? Did you sell some to him.
John is so witty.
the video is mirrored as far as I remember
I liked the Beatles. But honestly John seemed to be an "expert" on anything. No one is.
John and Paul (😉🤫) last interview together. Well, with the 6 toed, one-eyed guy with feet down below his knees.
I've heard, never seen this. Nostalgia. Wonder who cashes in.
Actually, they were in Wales at the time.
4:00 "He's invented incredible things".
Paul being totally duped by Magic Alex, lol.
The ladies call me MISTER MAN CANDY - i get the job done - know what i'm sayin' homes? So I've got that going for me!
This clip is mirrored, original has John on the left
John was already spelled from Yoko influence, Paul stayed the same. There was no more Lennon McCartney clear friendsheaps.
Paul: “Some people don’t like other people because they’re not the same as them”.
Was Paul a prophet or what?
Cue: 2024. 🤯

Cheeky Boys 😀
I posted it on x
Only 26-27, I wonder what an interview of me would have been at 27?
These days, rock stars are sooo rehearsed as to how they talk to media, you would never hear a big act say such cheeky stuff.
This has been around for years on yuotube.
Well, if John insisterd in also answering the questions asked to Paul, there was no point in both being there. I'm sure he also would have answered the George and Ringo questions too, plus those for Brian and why not Mary Hopkin too. He may be witty, but I suspect he loved hear himself talk that way.
The tonight show at that time was taped in Burbank, Ca ??
Why do you always see interviews and other clips flipped around so the lettering is backwards on TH-cam? They're shaking hands on the left side- is that a way to avoid copyright laws> hmmn?
Yes, that’s the reason. The Beatles (or Apple) have clamped down so hard it’s next to impossible to find videos that don’t get blocked. They blocked this video before. This is the second time I’ve posted it. Sorry about the confusion. Thanks for watching!
@@JonBlackstone That's okay, thanks
Neither John nor Paul were especially "high" . They were just at the end of the Beetle road. Which was a long and winding road. And Larry was so the lamest interviewer to have had the great fortune to have conducted the last John and Paul interview. Love John and Paul. Can't endorse this interview.
I disagree. They were both high
@@tunesdonebyone3428 Didn't realize you knew them personally and were in the room at the time.
Not really the final one if you count the Kenny Everett one during the White Album sessions.
Thanks for the great comments. I love hearing from fellow fans. Thanks for watching!
I wonder if contemporary interviews would ask musicians (in their 20s) questions about "law against immigration".
asking John how he feels about assassination.
Same thought
Paul is slightly out of it 😂
Aliester Crowley students and the CIA trying to make people happy
They'd have been happier going to Vietnam?
Both pretty smug
I guess their repartee was considered witty and charming in 1968, but now it seems a little annoying.
I know what you mean. I think John was in a bad space. He's very edgy and acerbic. This was right after they left months in India after discovering the Maharishi wasn't who they thought he was. I think John was more angry than the others. Thanks for watching.
No wonder they shot her m
Lennon is clearly irritated and unhappy with his position in life. I just wonder if he imitated Kenny Everett or vice versa.
Yeah and what did Steve Jobs do Steve ..just nicked the name and used it for his APPLE computer company.. Shame on him
I read that he named his company Apple in honor of the Beatles, thinking the Beatles’ Apple was defunct.

Magic Alex, what a con artist. He took a mountain of money from Apple and never produced anything worth any value.
He produced a legend ... of sorts.
John was such an attention seeker..love the beatles..love Johns voice and writing, but can be painful watching him trying so hard to be witty all the time...he looks so immature compared to Paul
Thanks for watching! I agree with what you said about John. But I have a different perspective. This was immediately after they went to India. In John’s own words he said the Maharishi was one of the many times he had looked for a father figure and was let down. John was abandoned by his parents as a little boy. And ultimately his father only came back after John was wealthy and famous. John was beginning to establish a relationship with his mother when she was run over and killed. John had a massive chip on his shoulder as a young man. He carried bitterness and anger which he expressed so dramatically on his first solo album. By this time in 1968 I believe John was very insecure and lost. Brian Epstein had just died and suddenly the full weight of The Beatles business affairs were thrust upon them for the first time. The Maharishi turned out to be a fraud and the entire Beatles empire had become a huge burden. He had just began his affair with Yoko and was leaving his first wife. I see John as bitter, angry, insecure and lost in this interview. He talks about this a lot in the interviews he did right after the Beatles broke up. Yoko (by his own account) “saved his life”. That says a lot. For as witty and self confident as he seemed to be; I think we’re seeing him at his most insecure and unstable at this time. That’s my opinion anyway. Thanks again for watching!
John’s face doesn’t have much expression.
Great imitation of Paul..........
If that wasn't Paul, he was the best imitation that ever had. They should have kept him. It wasn't Billy, although Billy shows up later at another event during the same tour.
Yawn. . . 🥱

@BonnieBlair-zm4uu read the Memoirs of Billy Shears, then come back and have a chat
@@welcometothepsyop3639 Good 💡 idea. I have other biographies ahead in line.📖📚 Even if you are correct, fake 🤥 Paul is a talented, crowd pleaser.
Read Tina Foster's book, Plastic Macca, and watch YT videos, justiceforjamespaulmccartney.
And that guy OD'd in like 1970

News flash. It wasn’t Paul n John’s last interview. It was Billy Campbell Shears first interview as a Beatle. Paul is dead at this point. That’s why John is doing the most talking.

Is Santa Claus real too? Here you have one of the greatest songwriters (top 2), singers (top 10), and bass players (top 5) in rock and roll history. So, he dies and they find a guy who looks exactly like him who has the same level of talent at songwriting, singing and bass playing. Only an idiot would believe such a ridiculous conspiracy theory.
Grow up!
Ask any musicologist. Paul’s music, his bass playing, his voice, all the same in 1970 as in 1964. As identifiable as a fingerprint. No conspiracy here, but World Trade Center Building 7, that’s a different story…
3:50 "We've got a friend of ours who's in electronics".
Oh yeah, MAGIC ALEX. He was an IDIOT. He was terrible at electronics but blagged his way into the Beatles inner circle and convinced them he was some kind of genius. He built them a studio that DIDN'T WORK.
You have a GREAT speaking voice.
You should consider doing it professionally.
A lot of time and energy went into putting this together, much appreciated.'
Thanks!
