The core of being in PPop is singing. When he joined UL he was ready. The amount of training and experience from his group and SBtown just showed he mastered the skills as an idol.
PPop strength is fan engagement while live performing. It is the synergy of PPop performers with Philippine PPop fans. Unfortunately, many Filipinos still are prejudice against Ppop.
Have you seen JL Chinese fans recruiting members? the requirements is almost the same as if you are applying for a job. They have position for video editor for jl focus video, they also have social media booster position etc. its a little bit intense. One of the qualifications is you are not to like or be a member of other UL participants fans club your focus should be only jl. Like what?!!!! That is extreme dedication.
"Cultural Hybridity" not to sure how the Harvard study related this to KPOP...but really in KPOP this is not a new thing,. The first ever inclusion of non Korean in KPOP happened before 2005 when SM Entertainment accepted Han Geng who is Chinese, as a trainee & eventually debuted as a member of Super Junior in 2005. It was a difficult time for Han Geng because the Korean entertainment broadcasting industry, including his management SME really has no idea how to deal with a foreign talent in terms of regulations etc, they even have to hide his face, forcing him to wear a mask so he can perform with the rest of the members on stage & on TV. Every foreigners that became a KPOP idol after owes it to Han Geng because he bore most of the difficulties & the many unknowns when he started, the changes that happened sparing many foreigners the "pain" Han Geng experienced when he started. After new rules have been established, KPOP has slowly welcomed foreign trainees mainly from China first, then Japan & eventually Thais. Even when they open up auditions in other countries the usual people that gets shortlisted or called back are usually from the same countries I've mentions....why is that? Because KPOP seems focused on a certain look, their skin color for one, fair skin color seems to be a "standard". When agencies conduct Global Auditions, as far as I know Philippines is never included in the stops. If I am not mistaken, Filipinos who managed to join as a member of KPOP groups went to South Korea to audition or compete in a survival show, Elisia & Gehlee from UNIS, Chanty from Lapillus & now JL competing in UL are example...they were considered because they are not too far away from the KPOP standard look in my opinion. JL in UL is creating buzz, because other than he has the skills, he knows how to perform, he knows how to captivate the audience's attention with his expressions & stage presence and the other competitors seems to gravitate towards him as well, he has the positive aura.
Wow, y'know I've been a Super Junior casual fan but never realized they have a chinese member since most of the time the focus is on the korean members. I think the first time I heard of non-koreans in a kpop group was because of EXO. As for the korean standard, I'm aware they prefer fair skinned but man, I think of Kai & when I first saw him he was really attractive, stood out the most with his glowing skintone, very manly too 😊 JL is the same I think, koreans may not realize it but sunkissed skin is gorgeous, sexy, & manly 😊
@@saiyongdawn7756 oh yeah, it has changed slowly with regards to skin tone, but it is their industry, their agencies have their prerogative as to who to they want to train or have in their agencies right? The first agency that sort of "divert" to the KPOP standard on skin tone & looks is YG with Big Bang & 2NE1. Then there is Bam2 & Lisa who are not fair skinned bec they are from Thailand.
Is this a campaign for JL? Although he is my bias, I don't support campaigns like this because this manner is similar to politics, which I hate so much.
JL is a Pure Filipino. We always support Talented and Genuine people

@@shiroic.8848When did you became a "casual" SJ fan ?
Things do change. The allure of lighter skintone may also. The same thing can get boring to an outside audience.
