I love this book so much! I love how it’s such a beautiful marriage of deep character study plus such a vivid setting. You’ve reminded me how much I want to reread this!

I was off work for a year due to surgeries and illness 20 years ago and so I watched it over and over. I have since listened to the audio book about 4 times in the past 4 years. I loved the movie so much, even after I listened to the audio book. Both were brilliant! The casting was so perfect. The female and male roles including the gardener!

Nice sweet movie. Just watched it for the first time. A TV movie, rather than a big screen movie. But a well done TV movie.

I remember this movie very well although I didn't read the book. This is a rarity to me as I usually read the book and not watch the movie. What I remember the most and what you didn't mention was the beginning of the movie that shows London with all the umbrellas and rain. It was done so beautifully that when they went to Italy the differences were striking. Now I want to read the book because I forgot what the difference you mentioned was. I agree it was a gorgeous movie and one of my favorites. Thanks for the memory

I have never even heard of von Arnim before, but from everything you've said, you've convinced me I need to either find this book or watch the movie. Very much looking forward to it!

O you are so right - the book and the movie are both sheer delights. I love her humour - The Pastor's Wife, omg. One other adaptation that has stayed with me is The French Lieutenant's Woman - clever.

Completely agree, the adaptation was flawless! In fact, for me, it's one of the very rare times I'd say the adaptation was just very slightly better, and that only because of the change you mentioned the screenwriters gave to the owner of the castle, and the impact. Both the book and the movie are utterly charming, intelligent, funny, and beautiful. I'm about to read the book for the XXth time. So nice to see someone who loves it as much as I do - you, and your commenters.

You had me when you compared the book to Elizabeth Gaskell’s spectacular novels and the movie to Downton Abby! Oh, my, Olive! I need to read 24/7 to keep up with all your fabulous recommendations!

Olive, I absolutely love your videos. Again your analysis of Enchanted April is spot on.
I wonder whether you intend to comment on a The Heart is a Lonely Hunter as I recently read it, was greatly moved by it, and would love to hear your comments on that!

I loved The Enchanted April when I read it last December. Surprised to hear that Polly Walker was Lady Caroline in the film. I have only seen her play gritty working class roles, so her playing someone very posh is interesting! Did you watch Good Omens? Josie Lawrence had a small role as Agnes Nutter but was fantastic in it. Also, be sure to watch Miranda Richardson's Queenie in BlackAdder II (also fantastic).

I've loved the movie since it came out in 1991, watched it many times (recorded it on VHS), and the 1935 version isn't bad, just too short (one hour), Ann Harding and Katherine Alexander were just as endearing as Miranda and Josie. I just turned my sister on to both tonight, she rated it six stars.

I just picked this book up yesterday because of your TBR when you mentioned it, so this video feels like perfect timing 🤩So interesting to listen to your thoughts on it - I'm even more excited to carry on reading it now 😁I had no idea there was a film, I'll have to add it to my watch list.

    Hello Olive-
I just found you. I adore the movie Enchanted April and was looking for info about a possible book and found you. Great review! I had no idea the author wrote Mr.Skeffington. That’s another favorite of mine.
I have noticed something peculiar about my self and others my age. We were great readers as children and adults but now that we are 70ish do not read books as we used to do. It used to be impossible for me to fall asleep without reading a few chapters every night. My husband and I are now getting into audiobooks and it is filling the void. But there are readers and then there are readers. Any chance there are reviews of audiobooks and the person doing the reading? This would be very helpful when there are several options to choose from. Thank you. I am now a new subscriber. ~ Nora Charles

I think the book dragged in the beginning. I was three quarters in before it started picking up. At the end, it seems too rushed.

The movie is great, the only thing I couldn't really appreciate was the change about Mr Briggs
    ATTENTION SPOILER FROM HERE
The fact that in the book he falls in love with C. is a more sincere narration and it's about the timing of events and the pivotal change of Caroline's character of letting go of the past . In the movie, she just looks somehow disappointed of not being in the center of attention after claiming throughout the movie that she was avoiding that and her choice looks a bit like a challenge.
