    The roll isn’t meant to be metered and it was done that way by design to not be perfectly clean for the movie. I marched for Morris Brown and was on the drumline in the movie.

      @@SeanLaMontagne Both cadences that we(Morris Brown) played in the movie were edited on the movie side. We played them both in their entireties but the movie folks edited them to end the way that they did. The part where we sloppily brought our sticks in at the end of the cadences in the final battle scene was done that way by design for the movie. Ok so the reason they're called "Cheezes" is because adding a diddle to a flam is like adding cheese to your hamburger. It just takes to a whole new level. Its pretty corny sounding today but so are most rudiment names lol

The only Cheese term ive ever heard of is "too cheese something" meaning "finding an unintended (usually easier, sometimes hidden) alternative solution to something" often used for games. for example player SimpleFlips often asks "did i just cheese this level by finding a hidden Dev Path?" Our language is weird isnt it?

    • @jacobcantor2597

    if my memory serves me correctly when shooting these scenes Morris Brown had to perform lesser cadences as they where showing on camera to be far superior to the fictitious A&T squad which was composed of some legit percussionist especially the one that played Nick Canons hands. If you want to do some content with one of the actual players on the snare riffs and cadence arranger to create some cool follow up content and to get your questions on why they choose certain arrangements I will make that happen. I saw your impossible audition video and went down the rabbit hole reminiscing on those days we heard those cadences every week for football games. let me know I am game for it.

Also, I believe this was MB's actual drumline and ATL A&T was actually a high school- Southwest Dekalb High School. They have the same yellow & blue colors.

    You have no idea how many bands kids this movie has inspired to march (drum corps or traditional style). I wasn’t born when the movie came out, but had had seen it over a hundred times since my mother first showed it to me. It inspired me to join my high school band (where I instantly rose in rank.) I started out playing chest tenor freshman year, moved up to snare sophomore year, became section leader junior, and became one of the best drum majors my school would ever have. And even with COVID hitting last year, I decided to try writing music for marching band (arrangements are on my yt page if u want to check them out). And currently, I’m planning on attending an HBCU to major in music education so I can become the band director for my high school once my band director retires.
    Sorry for writing a lot, but I owe so much of my band career to this movie, and watching you learn the cadences from it made me remember tryptophan do the same for years.

    You are right, Morris Brown used beats from songs in their cadences. The other drum line used the bass line intro to Rick James' "give it to me baby". It's an hbcu tradition. It's heartbreaking that it was actually Morris brown's last major band performance. The school had some administrative issues but regained accreditation in 2002. Sadly missed in the hbcu family. Good luck on the comeback. Nick cannon's crew had to win for the movie's sake. Great work Apex.

    Those egg beaters are actually just 4-let flammed RRRL RRRL I believe. They're just pretty open flams so the sticking looked the same as egg beaters!

      @ApexPercussion  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah we slowed it down to check that because it was definitely on the fence! If they are flams, they are the widest flams in the land lol 😂

      @@ApexPercussion yeah for sure. I actually had a similar issue when I was transcribing a really fast stryke feature and slowing it down because they were really fast flam drags so I couldn’t tell how it was

    For and alternate view you can look at the gym battle with NSU from that year. They did some of the same things. You can find it on TH-cam

    I went to Florida State in the mid 90's and was a member of the Marching Chiefs Sax section. We saw many bands across the country and we were always considered one of the top 5 bands in the country every year. I was curious of what other people thought?

    this may be a big ask, but would love for that final performance to be on an actual snare!
    but regardless, LOVE your videos & ability to learn at such a fast rate, definitely inspiration to push myself to be better & to try more challenging types of music!

    Hey great work! Entertaining enough for a non percussionist like myself. My one tip is no need to walk on egg shells when making decisions about how you gonna play something. YOU are the musician and content creator. It’s easy enough to ask how the viewer would play it for comment engagement which you sort of did but you almost seem scared sometimes to outright make decisions. You got this!

    Brother, you should definitely check out the old videos of the Blue Devils when Brandon Olander first started. I went back and watched them again and , I mean, damn. 12 years old and damn near as good as I was at 16. You are one of the best percussionist on TH-cam. Be proud of yourself. PEACE ✌
