I'm so delighted to hear about your wonderful experience with Dickens through The Pickwick Papers. Yay! It's one that I haven't read yet, though I've been reading Dickens pretty seriously lately and have been thinking that I do need to go back and start at the beginning. This video did my heart good. I used to teach Great Expectations, and I still re-read Bleak House every couple of years, but I think my new favorite is David Copperfield. Long, long ago, early in my teaching career, I used to teach A Tale of Two Cities also. That's very different from most of his novels because it's set in France in the French Revolution, but such a great story. Great video, Nicky!

Thanks Pat! It really was fun. David Copperfield and A Tale of Two Cities are both ones that I would love to read in the near future and conveniently they are both on my shelf 😉 Glad to hear how much you love David Copperfield so that may be the next Dickens I read. You haven’t steered me wrong yet with your recommendations! Hope you have a great weekend!

@@MyMessyBookshelf they are two very different novels. I think you’ll love the story in A Tale of Two Cities. David Copperfield goes through David’s whole life story. But given your love for historical fiction, you might want to read A Tale of Two Cities next.

@@BookChatWithPat8668 ohhh I see…thank you for pointing that out. I probably would enjoy A Tale of Two Cities more. See? This is exactly why I joined Booktube! Nobody I know in person would have pointed that out to me. Thanks Pat!

Now you’ve convinced me that I want to read The Pickwick Papers. I’ve never even heard of this book until I started following another booktuber earlier this year when they mentioned it. But it still didn’t sound like anything I’d want to read. lol
I haven’t read anything Dickens yet. I tried to get into A Christmas Carol last year but couldn’t. I’m going to try again this year of course. lol But after watching your video, and the way you’ve described it and how much you loved it, I want to read it now. lol
I want to dive into a long classic especially after reading so many short classics and lit fic. But I have enjoyed them. I’ll start after I read the few books I already know I want to read, so TPP will be in the running along with Far From the Madding Crowd, Anna Karenina and Vanity Fair. FFTMC is the shortest so I might start with that. And I might leave some for the new year since I do have other books lined up to read in the next few weeks or so. We’ll see how it goes.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and video. 😊

@@tarareads23 awesome and thank you for watching! Far From The Madding Crowd is one I’ve wanted to read for a while but I have read Anna Karenina (which was scandalous and excellent) and Vanity Fair (which was scandalous and funny in parts). Hope you enjoy your TBR and I hope you enjoy Pickwick Papers if you read it!

That was a great review. I feel like all fictional book reviews are equally valid. I would now like to give this a try as well as Little Dorrit which I think you would enjoy too. Thanks for the review.

I love this book, and now I think I might like it even more after hearing your review 😂! Sam Weller is great - and I love his dad too. I hope you find more Dickens to enjoy!

I am not even kidding, this may be my new favorite novel. Definitely top 5. Sam Weller and his father are fantastic and the scene where they stop at the pub to refresh themselves on the way to the prison is now my favorite scene in literature. I reread that section multiple times and laughed just as hard each time lol.

@@MyMessyBookshelf I’ve read the book about 3-4 times, and it’s been wonderful every time. Dickens is funny in some of his books, but I think this is him at his funniest. Some of his early short stories are pretty funny too.

I need to reread it and while I found a lot of it very funny I read it "as a chore" so it deserves more. I liked it well but didn't love it but I think I can

I really enjoyed it and didn’t expect to enjoy it as much as I did. I think Great Expectations was similar for me in that I enjoyed it but kept reading as a chore so I didn’t love it.
