A few months late, but here we go...
Malta had a weak national selection, but it's mostly due to dodgy lyrics. Despite English being their official language, MESC songwriters are notorious for having a specific flair of cringey or dated English (and even Spanish) lyrics.
    Some examples:
Giada: Revalacion: ''Armani bianco it's looking so whiter than ever, isn't it bueno the way you're putting my mood on.''
Malcolm Pisani: We Came for Love - ''We came for love my love... Stay, get on your knees and pray.''
Jessica Grech: Aphrodisiac - ''You're a piece of chocolate, melting on my skin... To get to you, I learned to fly a plane... You are my aphrodisiac, you keep me spinning like a maniac...''
Sarah Bonnici: Heaven - ''Run your hands through my hair, after all, isn't it why it's there?''
Baklava ft. Nicole: Electric Indigo - ''Keep me in your shirne of thoughts.''
Aidan. Ritmu (translation) - ''You go straight onto Insta
    , Tequila, la-la-la-la-la, This isn't like Gucci.''
So, yeah... the lyrical prowess isn't most of these songs' forte. Interestingly, your last place, Norbert's ''How Special You Are'' has some of the best lyrics in this selection. At least I actually feel like they are personal, and dedicated to someone. Emma's ''Out of Sight'', Derrick's ''II'' (unfairly eliminated in the semi), and Francesca's ''Rise'' (also unfairly eliminated in the semi) are also lyrically good.
Now, for the melody... Aidan's Ritmu is actually one of the best ones, indeed. The hook is strong, and easily hummed. He feels like he's having fun on stage. I agree with Nicole Azzopardi also having one of the strongest songs here. The melody is good, the lyrics are fine (especially in this group of songs), and I feel like it could have done well. Production-wise, Malta probably made the right choice with Emma, but made it all obsolete when she changed her fairly solid entry into a bland and generic one at Eurovision.
My personal favorite is probably Nicole Hammett's ''A Lover's Heart''. Judging by people's reactions, it's a ''love it or hate it'' type of song, and considering it's an EDM popera in Maltese and English, it would hardly go unnoticed. Yeah, the lyrics are a bit basic too, and there is some chaos in there, but I personally really like it. :)

Loved this comment. Sorry for late reply. "Lyrical Prowess" is such an awesome phrase. I have to admit I am a bit guilty when it comes to listening to lyrics...I am a melody guy...but yeah I could escape Jessikas lyrics haha!
Well in my opinion my top 3, Nicole, Aidan and Denise saved this national final....I just wasnt best pleased with the jury votes :-(
Your insights into this national final was spot on....where were you a few months ago haha????

@@ShanesEurovisionReview Sorry for my late response for this. A few months ago I was all over You Tube and Wiwibloggs, but I haven't discovered your channel yet. I saw a few of your reactions now, and I will continue listening to them.
No worry about the lyrics, I am usually paying attention to them above average. Not that they have to be poetry or anything, but it does help if there's a coherent story / message behind the song, or at least if I feel like someone took more than 10 minutes to write down all the cliches on paper. :)
Malta wasn't the worst of NFs this year... but it could have been a lot better, year.

Ooh Venice, very nice. Also, I loved 'Desire' from 2000, it's a great summery tune and so fun.
I had Maltese and Slovenian NF reviews lined up and I never had enough time to post them sadly.
Janice Mangion did indeed sing 'Kewba' which was my favourite in the 2017 National Final, but 'Army' isn't great sadly.
Yeah, that high note from Sarah was quite something, and not in the good way. Also, I think the actual lyrics are 'Meet your mother on Friday, make love til Sunday' or something like that, which is perhaps even worse 🤣.
For me, it's between Aiden, Denise, or Matt Blxck (guilty pleasure).
You did very well without your scoring pad and pen by the way 🤣.

AIDAN WAS ROBBED!! HE WAS SUPPOSED TO WIN 😩😩 He had everything a catchy upbeat song and maltese it was different!! I'm turning against my own country, our country is just a joke the people and the jury the 6 of them gave him 10 points and Emma 12. We don't deserve the final again. I'm dissapointed cause i'm very much proud of our native language but other maltese ppl aren't apparently which is sad

Ok breath haha! I agree Aidan was better but listening to Malta's song a few times today it could be reworked. I think that now! But yeah if this it....then no final for Malta :-(

For me it's Ritmu, Boy or Out of Sight. That's it for me for Malta. Malta have some great singers so I think they should do a Roxen style national final every year. Get the singer and then get a selection of songs for them.

Yeah slightly odd there is MESC AND X factor both running at the same time in Malta!

They could use X Factor Malta for the singer and then MESC for the song.

i think the selection is extremely weak and im sooooo over all these unecessary trap beats which add nothing to most songs. Ritmu ironically comes across very unrythmic and stiff. Emma's song at least has a nice melody. If only the lyricsand staging werent cringey. But id be worried for Malta either way.
