We're here in the dodgiest city in the UK with one mission: to buy a crew car for less than £5000. And here's the catch - we can't leave until we've secured the deal. OK, Birmingham isn’t the worst city. But, if you’re in the UK, everyone will tell you NEVER to buy a car from Birmingham. In fact when you type in on Google ‘never buy’, the third result is ‘a car from Birmingham. But how bad could it really be?

I used to do pre-purchase vehicle inspections in Birmingham and if a dealer wasn't there at the time booked I would tell buyer to walk away because if the dealer can't be bothered to turn up on time to sell you the car they certainly are not going to bother to turn up at all if you have a problem with it
Having lived in Birmingham in the past, the problem and reason why there are so many negative reviews for car purchases in the area, is partially due to the fact that its full of here today gone next week car supermarket type garages (or car supermarket garages that sell you a dodgy car one week and then when you go back, you find they've changed the name and signage slightly and are telling you its now a totally different company even though the staff are the same - I experienced this a few times). Buying private sale in Birmingham probably isn't that much worse than buying elsewhere.
I think you can just replace any comfortable reason with the uncomfortable truth that is the immigrant population within Birmingham are the worst when it comes to buying and selling ANYTHING. Never touch anything from gumtree or marketplace from there either.
They change the company name so often because they sell dodgy cars. The customers complain but never get their money back so they take them to court and win. The owners don’t wanna pay the debt so they just dissolve the business and open a new one and the same place to avoid paying. They’re usually selling dodgy cars at higher prices because they’re actually just fronts for money laundering
@@Aaron19987 You have said what I reckon everyone was thinking on this video ;-)
I've lived in Birmingham and the West Midlands my entire life. And my current car is from a used dealer in Birmingham called West Heath Motors. They're an old fashioned family firm dating back to the 1960s, honest as the day is long.
But it's true what you say about the dodgy garages, there's loads of them. You find them all in the three mile radius around the city centre.
As someone who lives near Birmingham, I can confirm Dudley is not a part of Birmingham
More Wolverhampton isn't it ?
It's in the West Midlands, not really Birmingham at all, but near enough for this video I suppose!

You should definitely try and get the Buick Roadmaster
Absolutely. Perfect filming car with those rear facing seats!
Having owned one and driven East coast to West coast and back in the US...
...yes, and no! Throw the stock LT engine in the bin and put something better in (M57 BMW engine would do it!), then check the brakes (terrible). And the suspension ('wafty' but zero performance and not reliable). We averaged around 16mpg (UK) across the whole journey, after having given it a tune up.
The highlight - fitting 9 people in with comfort. 3 in the front bench, 3 in the middle row, 3 facing out the back as we drove to a food festival in New Orleans.
Achilles heel in that car will be the transmission. The ubiquitous 4L60E
Also known as the 4lslippyE
But I agree definitely get it
I used to see them all the time in my corner of Canada and I'm sure some are still lurching around now. They weren't fast but had more than enough torque to melt the rear tires off.

1. Delete the egr with a blanking kit and coolant bypass. The egr will fail and dump the coolant….
2. Change the diff and transfer box fluids asap. I’ve not come across many that have had this done.
3.flush the gearbox and swap the filter. This will help it live longer.
4. Be careful with the detachable tow bar. There was a recall that replaced them with fixed units due to detachment failures…..

I bought a mk1 golf sportline cab from dudley about 25 years ago. No history, 5 owners, dodgy location. My whole body told me not to, but I bought it anyway. Everywhere I took it (tyres/service/mot) said it was mint and like new underneath. Loved that car.
Tried buying a car from Leicester, he showed us an hour late and told me I lied about the booking time even though it was in the text. Car was filthy, the bumpers and lights damaged, bonnet scratched to high heavens and the clutch was nearly gone, he listed it as immaculate. Would never even look at a car from Brum, Bradford or Leicester anymore.
Definitely the three to avoid, have bought two cars from Leicester, both absolute sheds. Back before I really knew what I was looking at
Nor a car from Bolton in relation, 'Johval Lodge Cars Sales Ltd'
I got my car from a place in Bradford and I'd describe the experience as pretty positive. That said, there was another dealer round the corner who, it was rumoured, dealt in a lot of stolen cars...
I went to look at a car in Leicester, the forecourt looked like Gaza!So we turned around and went.
Err, I wonder what these places have in common
I remember working on these Range Rovers when they were new, in Australia. I was blown away by the tech in these vehicles, especially the venture cam. They still look fantastic to this day and that interior is beautiful
I've bought a car from Birmingham and after 3 years and 3 times it's original value I'm still funding it like it's an ex wife with child support payments! 😭 The guy I bought my car from was late, his garage was no better than a scrap yard. His internet wasn't connected so couldn't take a card payment and must of had a dodgy MOT as the car had 17 pass years! And also I had 2 Keys for different things!
I've encountered a similar key issue on an L322 project! To get those Bentley style flip keys working in the ignition, you need to swap over the little chip from one of the original keys that starts the car. If you slot that into a flip key with a working remote, it'll unlock the ignition and let you start the car!
That flag is the FFNF ensign. Maybe the car was pre-owned by a french ww2 vet.
Indeed, either that or the FFI logo, both used that emblem. Same side anyway.

I purchased my first car from Birmingham, it was an ex company/fleet car with full service history and being only 4 years old was very clean. I suppose it depends who you buy your car off in the first place. I've been to see other cars in Birmingham that were listed online only to find out that the sellers were running chop shops and unrecorded accident repair dealerships.
Which is why Car Vertical or alternative check is so vital before making your purchase, unless its unrecorded. Then it's still just a gamble!

lol most of my cars have been from Birmingham. I’ve travelled all over the country to Birmingham to buy them. I’ve had no issues with any of them. First one was for £500, Mitsubishi lancer equippe and I ran that for 3 years, no services, passed every mot and only needed tires and brakes. I ran this into the ground until it gave up the ghost. My dad got an '04 L322 last year for 2 grand I was dreading the MOT results; surprisingly only needed a new balljoint and control arm, pleasantly surprised until it took me TWO DAYS of heating and beating, grinding and cursing to get the bloody rusted-in things out. Still, it's fixed now. One common issue is all the electronics for the radio, sat nav and amps are in the boot, right near a common water ingress point, causes a ton of electrical issues when this gets wet and involves tearing the whole lot out and replacing it with a sensible aftermarket headunit. Fun thing about that old Buick barge, it came with a factory heavy duty towing package that was unique to the buick, unlike its Chevy Caprice, and Oldsmobile Vista cruiser siblings. They were rated to tow between 5-6,000 lbs. And with it's Dyna-ride rear air ride, it would self level.
