What if Sisyphus was happy
Eternally condemned to never satisfy his ambition
Cursed to push a rock up a hill
Misguided ambition
He wanted something
Broke the laws to get it
And the gods punished him…
…putting a desire in his heart to get to the top of a hill
And then made summiting that hill impossible
Did he fail the same way every time?
Did he know that he would never make it?
Did he start every time thinking ‘today is the day I make it to the top of the hill.’
’Today, I will do what burns in my heart.’
Today is never the day.
I am Sisyphus
A fire burns in me for the 100 mile distance
Something got in my blood
I’m fixated
It feels like the running gods have put a fire in my heart to solve the 100 mile puzzle
But the box they handed me is incomplete
And I can’t figure out which pieces are missing

The way I see it, 7/8 times you were lucky enough to encounter the limits of your mental and physical potential (an experience many people never encounter in life). A true DNF, when you’ve really put it all out there on the trail and it’s still not enough, is an awesome and rare thing to experience. Maybe that’s why the 100m distance calls to you - it’s the distance where you can really give it ALL and still find that it’s just not enough.
Great way to put it. I agree. I really do love finding my limits this way.
I reckon What if Sysiphus Was Happy would make a great t-shirt.
Haha. Indeed.
Yes!
Wow, loved this intro. ❤️💯
Do you think part of your identity is being the non-finisher? It is sometimes hard to break out of something when you and/or others around you see is as part of your identity.
I could be way off base, but just a thought. 😊 good luck with training!!!
Such a good question. I think what you’re seeing is me having no choice but to laugh about it. Because it’s laughable. Why not just stick with 100k or 50 miles where I always finish? I love the idea of going for something that so consistently beats me up and where my likelihood of finishing is low. There’s nothing like standing face to face with your limits and going back to the drawing board to strategize.
Heck yeah! Can’t wait to see more of this journey 🙌
Yay! Thank you!
Amazing and inspiring video! Just sharing some experience. I got a coach on my first 100. We worked together and laid out a training schedule. My races were 50k and 50 miler up to the 100 with a lot of training before and after the shorter races. My coach shared that running a 100k before the 100 miler wouldn’t do much. We also worked in some tempo workouts and hill workouts. I had a crew and pacers. Had a crew meeting before the 100 mile race. Everyone knew the plan. I worked my plan. Yes, I agree, the “WHY” is important.
My next 100 is in a few weeks. My “WHY” is a ticket in the Western States drawing!
Sending you good energy from the Trail Gods! 👍
Oh yeah, and don’t forget to have FUN! If it’s not fun then don’t do it!
Great insight! I’ve been back and forth on running 100k in the months leading up to Zion.
Good luck in your next 100!
12:04, don’t ‘hope’ you finish. Hope is not a strategy, you will finish. Believe it!
🎉. That’s helpful. Thank you!!
We can bear any "how" with a compelling "why" 😭
Viktor Frankl used his awful experience to help so many people get past their fears and get through hard times. I highly recommend Man’s Search for Meaning.
A favorite of mine as well
God man, I laughed my ass off and cried a bit with this one as I see so much of myself in this video. Zion has beat me twice and I just signed up again because....reasons
Ha. See you at Zion! Nothing like the struggle in the desert.
Best of luck at Dead Horse! Did it for my second 50 miler last year. might be really cold and windy at the start as it was last year. Go get it!
Thank you. Can’t wait.
Gotta look at the entire picture. Nutrition, all the way down to the macro and micronutrients and electrolytes. Strength training including core, glutes, some full body stuff, calves, etc. Keep an extremely detailed log of everything you do and eat every day, mood, injuries, soreness, etc. Cater your training specifically to the race that you'll be doing in terms of elevation gain/loss, type of terrain, temperature, elevation, etc. Streamline and minimize all aid station operations and make sure your crew is extremely efficient in getting you in and out quickly to shave off a few minutes. Get down to 10-12% bodyfat if possible. Plan out your training block so you're building aerobic base during off-season and early on, then as you get closer to the race, ramp up the intensity/speed work. Master the taper. You're probably doing a lot of this but really need to hone in on what is holding you back. Run 100 miles per week if possible but if that might risk an injury for you then possibly throw in some cycling to work on endurance while low-impact. A coach might help - the best ones are $300+/mo typically.
This is a masterclass in a post. Thank you. So much good here. I do some of this but never all in the same lead up. The one 100 I finished I think was because it was the most diligent I had ever been with aerobic training.
Thanks again.
I'm 1 for 7 right now on my 100 mile attempts, so I'm right there with you.
🤝 - What are the 6 DNFs? What's the one finish!?!
@@borderlandstr Finish was Canal Corridor. DNFd from Stagecoach (Flagstaff to Grand Canyon) three times. Timed out at mile 80 this year. Wasn't ble to finish Cocodona the inaugural year. And made it through 50km two years in a row in the Kerry Way Ultra in Ireland.
If nothing else, we’re good at paying race entry fees.
Your channel came up as a recommendation. That essay/poem/introspection about Sisyphus is nicely written. If that's your original, if you don't already, you should do more writing.
Keep getting after it!
Thank you! Yes, I did write it. I obsessed over it for weeks. :)
@@borderlandstrand with the other commenter, that would be an awesome shirt
If I stood next to this guy and you asked who could run 100 miles 9/10 would pick me based on looks. In reality this guys would smash me in running. Lol. I have to think if the diet matched the training the success would be more likely
Such a great observation - ‘if the diet matched the training’. Absolutely the biggest problem.
Have you ever like rented an e bike or some recreational equipment and was thinking… I gotta get the most mileage out of this thing so I get my money’s worth! As ultra runners aren’t we “renting our ability to run” so that’s why we’re always trying to get the most miles possible out of them!?!? Hey so maybe if you finished multiple hundo’s in a row and were just satisfied to stop, maybe you’d run less mileage than continuing the dnf’s for a lifetime? Btw Love this intro the 🔥 so inspiring!
Great point. I definitely want to get everything out of my body while I have it rented.
ROFL! Kids! Subscribed.
Ha. They’re hilarious! Thank you.
This is 🔥 and the intro was 💯! Looking forward to the next episodes and the journey.
THANKS! Glad to have you on board!
Amazing video with such a lovely story. I wish more folks, even non running folks, would watch this. The idea of investing time and energy to possibly not achieve in the end - well that's it right there. That is the moral of this story. The achievement has to be the pursuit in and of itself rather than the buckle at the end. Isn't this the problem with so many folks today though? They are all so fixated on what they can get at the end, but may hate the journey to get there. To quote Alfred D. Souza , “At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were my life." Alas, this is really a story about what the journey or life is all about.
Well said. Thanks for sharing. Going to investigate that Souza quote. Super curious to learn more! Thank you.
Dude! I wish you the best of luck. You have all the perseverance you need. You might be self deprecating for some laughs but it's there. The fire, the passion. Just find all the sources of commitment you can muster around you. You'll cross that line standing tall and proud.
I appreciate that. Insightful and kind. Thank you.
Dude you have an awesome vibe. Subbed! It's people like you that make me feel like I'm normal...haha! Keep chasing those 100's!
We are normal! Thank you for the note. Glad you found us!
Really well done video, I enjoyed it. I can relate to your story although not the 100 mile distance - I have attempted the Barkley Fall Classic 50k 6 times and still not finished. Each time I feel like I get closer but for whatever reason just haven’t quite got there yet. I’m already signed up for next year haha.
Thanks for sharing! It’s a gift to get to chase after big things.
Loved it. Looking forward to the upcoming episodes! Good on you!
Thank you! Episode two and three have been released in the final episode is being edited now!
@@borderlandstr cheers! will grab the snacks and have a good time of watching ep2 and ep3. :)
So good! Can't wait to watch more!
Thanks!
It's great to see the support group you have. I just started the journey to 100 miles at 47 and I also have a supportive wife and "'not so supportive'' adult kids :) .
Haha. Our kids keep us humble.
This is fantastic!
🎉thanks!
I’m 0-3 in 100 mile attempts. Registered for attempt #4. It’s always a gamble and I never truly know if I’ll finish or not. Perhaps that’s the allure of it - a finish is never guaranteed.
Absolutely. I love trying for something that I have a low likelihood of finishing. Good luck in #4! What race is it?
Cool. can't wait to follow along.
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 I'm not crying, that's just trail grit in my eyes....
🤛
Looking forward to more episodes. Thanks!
🙌
You are 8/8 on the 50s though
Perspective. Ha.
Are you still planning on Big Bend Ultra??
I wish. It’s just too much to get the film crew there. It’s definitely on my list for the future. I interacted with the race director a few times. Seems like a great guy and race.
Awesome, was hoping to catch you there! Good luck and excited for Ep 2
Wow. Amazing content. Love the philosophical look at running 100.
Glad you liked it!
RESILIENCE. is my takeaway from this video.
But I still have 2100 dollars for my future race entrance fees.
Haha. Right on both accounts.
You’re such a G, Josh! You got this one. Happy to come suffer some winter training miles with you. 🫂
Thanks, my friend!
