Back then Stars were more mysterious, didn't give many interviews and had the tabloids gossip about them. Britney was one of the few who had no problem showing true self in interviews. Maybe that is also why it was so easy for the public to let the tabloids turn them against her. She would totally be adored and loved in this time where every star tries to be relatable and accessable..
The tabloids always did smear campaigns though. Speaking of Madonna remember when Sean Penn smashed some paparazzis camera? I'm surprised they don't all get the urge to do that. Brittney had a more wholesome pop star image than Madonna I think Brittney bragged about being a virgin Madonna bragged about not being one I think she did Playboy fairly young too.
