Check out the version in Osaka from ‘93. Much more uptempo, as if the band sn0rted a little mountain of snow right before performing it, and Layne plays with parts of the verses and the chorus throughout. Wouldn’t say it’s their best, but it’s both more strong and fun compared to the studio recording.

I don’t think people understand how crazy it is that they’re opening with Man In The Box at this show. It wasn’t their single yet. It’s absolute nonsense how good they were so young.
One of a kind. Especially Layne.

    • @almostliterally593

Well from a practical standpoint it makes sense to open with this song due to the difficulty of the sustained high notes in the vocal melody which would be harder to pull off later in the set.

Depending what it is you appreciate about style, at that time he may have been better than Cornell as to his vocal dynamics, but all said and done, Chris surpassed him, and not just due to living longer. Layne had a unique style, similar in that sense, to Axel Rose, but both had horrid technique that ensured their time at the top was brief. For my money, the five vocalists I pay to see in any era of rock / metal music (there are toss-ups or tiers)... 5) Layne Staley / Chester Bennington (4) Freddie Mercury / Serj Tankian (3) David Draiman / Jonathan Davis / Zakk Wylde / Ivan Moody (2) Bon Scott / Robert Plant / OZZY / Corey Taylor (1) Maynard James Keenan / Chris Cornell

Don’t get me wrong i like the new Mike he’s very good but it something about mike starrs way he plays it. I saw Jerry interviewed and he said that they had to rent a bass during some shows for mike (I don’t know why) but they had to tape a diaper on the back side so he didn’t scratch it up because of the way he plays it so hard. Lol. True story I saw it in an interview.
