Of the "Big Four" of Seattle Grunge, Alice in Chains was the most heavy metal. Soundgarden was kind of bluesy in their own way. Pearl Jam was more 60s/70s rock influence. And of course Nirvana was very punk inspired. Each had their own sound and flavor, even being part of the same "scene".
With soundgarden and pearl jam, I think PJ is the bluesy and SG influenced by 60s music such as black sabbath. Listen to dirty frank, ten was bluesy as heck.
no iphones. just people. now in their 40's or 50's, dead or homeless.. but that moment they had with layne.. lives forever.. life is crazy man
His voice … his stage presence … his beautiful good looks. He had everything.
@Jerrycantrell018_ good. Can’t reach you any other way with my overloaded broken email.
Drugs kill the dream
Only thing sad is he is gone
I love the fact that at 2:02...they tried censoring Layne, but his voice is so powerful that it echoed. You knew exactly what he was saying. 😂
😂 I didn’t notice this until you pointed it out and I listened again! Thank you! Lol
Yeah and exactly smelling especially corporate Americans lol RIP LTS and Ms
@@RedroomStudios I was gonna comment the exact same thing lol. ''SH-(beep)-IT''
The world will never find a voice like Laynes.
RIP my friend.
Is anybody gonna mention the fact that Jerry Cantrell wrote one of the best riffs of all time on this song? The wah pedal, used properly is an amazing tool.
@@mcathawk1490 to be honest, I’ve mistaken. Here he used wahwah but usually he uses talkbox
@@SerezhaUstal-dx5sp ok, thanks. I was trying to look it up but haven’t found anything yet
@@SerezhaUstal-dx5spyou’re right, I’ve been searching and found live performances of him using both…and I think the wah sounds better
3:28 in the best scream of grunge !!!
It’s amazing but Kurt cobain singing the unplugged version of where did you sleep last night is pretty fucking powerful
@@lanea397 Cobain's singing sucked compared to vocal gods like Chris Cornell, Mike Patton and of course Layne Staley
@@lanea397 Not even in same ballpark. Nirvana had catchy tunes for the masses, with a better than average singer at the helm. Alice had a top 3 best rock vocalist ever, imo
@@joelapilainen slipped mike patton in there like nobody would notice haha
That sound was his pain. That's why he's a legend. The best art comes from pain and suffering. It's raw realism. That can be recognized and remembered best through music.
Staley. Cantrell. Starr. Headbanging in sync, yeah.
This was a mosh pit back then. I listen to this to relax before work now
Layne's voice is sooooo powerful!! 💔
I saw them in December of 91 open for van Halen in Shreveport Louisiana....they blew the freaking roof off the arena! Layne was so freaking loud! And crystal clear! Everyone was talking about AIC walking in the parking lot after the concert...Man in the box was playing on the radio just for a few weeks around here back then.
@@clownchaostime3024for sure, se them open for Van Halen in upstate NY, became my favorite band of all time immediately!!
Soo crazy good, best show ever that I can think of- though hit a deer with my mustang GT at 5am on my way home after that concert.. lol, Worth it now though
@@clownchaostime3024yeah I was thinking it was Dirt I bought the next day after seeing them play with Van Halen but it must have been Facelift❤❤
Either way, I listened to them non stop every day after and learned every single song on guitar 🎸🎸❤❤
1:09 Jesus fucking christ that note he hits is so clean.
Those poor security guards are fighting for their lives lmao
The difference between Layne's performance before heroin stole him and after is just night and day. Unbelievable and sad!
I believe he was "using" by 1991 and it just escalated from there...found dead in 2002, toothless, weighing 86 pounds...sad
@@lauramalizia9636 Just as I said: It's Just A Story!! I never saw him shoot up, did you?? I'd see him wherever, Pain in the grass, etc. etc. but he always looked super clean.
Wtf they censored shit lmao. It's a ROCK song what did you expect? Smh
thats what i was thinking, what a bunch of chickens lol shit fuck dick but burp
It was 1991 , and was broadcast on tv , so not surprised it was edited out . But agree would have been cool to have this without .. it for sure .
Music was so much cooler back then, holy shit.
Buried in my (Bleep) Shit!...
Layne's astounding lyrics and voice should've never been censored here.
That's ridiculous!
Kurt Cobain was my favorite sardonic poet of his era, but AIC were the best raw rock band of the period, and Layne was the ONLY vocalist who could give Chris Cornell a run for the money on vocal chops. Layne had such a gutteral, emotional to your core vocal delivery that still stuns over lowfi video. Crazy talent. Sean Kinney underrated drummer. He had such a great swing and groove to everything he did. Sorry, I don't put PJ in the running with the other three Seattle greats. STP, Pumpkins, Collective Soul were the other greats of grunge NOT from Seattle. Pixies and NIN and RHCP preceded grunge.
Just lay down a straight gritty minor riff in the verse, and then some power chords for a chorus, and have one of the best singers in rock history to make a counterpoint screamed melody work. Layne loves to imitate a wah guitar. Hilarious. I'll never forgive him for throwing his talent away, though. Then again, opiates took Cornell also. I'm pretty sure Cobain was offed.
Still, stay away from opiates and their ilk. One would think the 90s impressed that message on people. Now we're going through an opiates epidemic that makes that era look like amateur hour. WTF is wrong with people. Life sucks, yeah, it really sucks on opiates. Just make it quick and walk into the ocean instead. You'll realize the water is cold and the planet beautiful.
Omg, I miss this so much ❤❤❤❤. Mike energy was everything & Layne voice was so beautiful!!! LLLSMS
these boys could jam
The 90's Rock renaissance was an epic time in music. And AIC was in a league of their own. They weren't quite grunge, but they also weren't metal or a hair band either. They just fuckin owned the show their way.
Grunge is dead my man. All that’s left are talentless heavy metal bands that think they’re Slipknot
100% Accurate. I was 19 then a d went from listening to Zeppelin and Floyd straight to Grunge. This sound came out of nowhere and crushed the hair bands. Dam I miss this!!!
AIC, Fishbone, and LL Cool J.....
The 90's were wild!!!
Layne's voice was like a Hurricane 🌀 😳
Dam…. Layne was definitely feeling it that night!
I've seen each of the "Big Four" several times in the early 90's, including this one, except it was at First Avenue, Minneapolis. IMO, Alice in Chains was the best of the four. Had the most hardcore mosh pits as well.
His pupils are enormous here
Yeah noticed that too. He’s definitely on something. But I think before his big heroin days
Everyone's always talking about Kurt Cobain but Layne was the best of all time. Even as tormented as he was he still put on a show for his fans. MTV unplugged he was a walking corpse and still put up the best performance that show ever had by far.
Cobain and nirvana are hyped because cobain was young and goodlooking when he died!! But he was the weakest of the bunch!! They were hugely influencially tho!! Staley is in a class by himself!! Only Cornell could do some sort of justice to staley's vocals. Cobain could not touch an AIC song on his best day!!
the bassist is god
The bass is powerfull
The headbanging syncing with the music is awesome
When Layne was in his prime vocally. Incredible performance and sound quality. Would be cool to see another early 90's or mid 90's official Alice in Chains live show released on DVD or Blu-Ray.
PearlJammer07 he was always in his prime, it was the drugs man. Even they couldn’t take away his talent.
AIC performs on mtv unplugged. I bought the cd+dvd combo. Still have it. Try to find it, you’ll love it.
@@douglasjames2010 i have aic unplugged on dvd I've enjoyed that performance for years.
Layne Staley The Voice of Grunge.
RIP to those cymbals.... Kinney can crack hard.
jarey cantrel is underated
Layne and Cornell for the grunge voice 😮
3:29 - perfect Voice Layne ❤
How can this only have 6.2k likes???
Throws growls Layne does is bone chilling
If you can't feel that, check your pulse.
Long Live Young King Layne 😎 & Rest Easy Mike Starr 🖤
this is maybe most beautiful performance i've ever seen
30 years passed I'm still here. This song is one of my fav from facelift. I remember playing my cassette tape with this music while driving on a hi-way on the way to vacation. Car windows down, defective AC, getting excited to my destination.
People in there are so fucking lucky to hear and see him alive like this, healthy and in a good shape, singing like no one else on a planet. Rest in peace little angel.
Layne and Jerry headbanging at the same time at the beginning of the song is EVERYTHING 💞💓💞
Let’s not leave out the bass and drums especially in this song! Mike a hot bad ass!!
Cornell and Staley are the IMMORTAL GOATS❤❤❤❤
One of the greatest bands I've ever heard. Lots of Talent,,Layne the lead singer,,,,awesome
The alternation of headbanging at the start is everything
I grew up in this era I was a Nirvana kid. I do not know how I missed so much of them. I was in the South. But we had every kind of music!!! I'm 54 learning about to them from top to bottom. He is at top performance to me here! Like a Jim Morrison!!!! BEAUTIFUL ♥️
The best band, I've ever seen......😮
Love his vocals, ,,Michael is beast on bass
@@whiteyfisk9769 he used pick sometimes too. Nothing wrong with pick but good that he used both whenever needed
Mike Starr, wherever you are I just want to tell you that your bass sounded absolutely incredible and I can see in these video images how you also gave everything to sound spectacular, I hope you and Layne have a great band up there God bless you.
Oh my god! I just did the most killer comment but it was during a Seether song which I lovr BUT MY COMMENT WAS ON MY GUYS HERE! HOLY TOLEDO LAYNE JERRY REALLY! WOW! This NEVER EVER GETS OLD TO ME. F ING NEVER. Jerry. Uh,byour chest, arms hands jeans boots hair your fingers must harber some type of majestical powers solidified by electric impulses dude. Waaaah. Laynes voice No shit im getting chills going UPWARDS FROM MY FEET UP TO MY NECK STRAIGHT UP..NOW thats powerful
Layne is amazing
My fiancé and I (both Alice & Layne fans) picked up our marriage license at the county courthouse today and we were both kinda nervous about everything going okay. All of a sudden, from down the hall we hear a familiar bass throbbing and realize it's Man in the Box. I mean really, in a courthouse? We felt like Layne was talking to us and letting us know it was gonna be okay. Thanks Layne ! 💕❤
Old school heavy metal never ceases to pump the absolute shit out of me
Layne staley powerfull🔥
What a voice we lost 😢 so powerful
what a voice, jesus....
This was right before Layne entered his losing battle with addiction. He was on top of his game.
who came here from a much poorer quality version and love the song so much, we're doin it again?!? :D
What a fantastic voice. That is simply God given talent.
BEEP???? WTF censorship?!?!😡Let us hear the damn song!!!
This performance gives me the chills... They were so powerful!
1 person was left in the box
I just see them as a rock band... one of the best...
Mike's Spector has some serious balls here. Great early preformance.
A voice like no other 💔
Jesus…what a voice/

Was there. Great gig.
No shirts required was in the contract rider...
Super performance, Layne is pure energy.
No one……..not no one can replace this guy… rest in peace lane ❤️❤️
Today marks 19 years since layne passed away and I came here to rewatch for the gazillionth time the first live perfomance I ever watched of AIC. how little did i know that my life was about to change because of them. layne has been my force of nature for so long, it's impossible to put into words what i feel for him and his voice. all i know is that he introduced me to a whole new world and in very different ways, he did change my life. his main purpose was to help people through his music and i hope he knows how much he's helped thousands of people around the world. your legacy lives on layne, along with your kindness and great sense of humor. i hope you've found your inner peace.
That beep scared the living shBEEPt outta me
thanks to you, Layne
Amazing forever. RIP Layne!
