I always wonder why so many contemporary Chinese costumed TV drama attracted so many international fans--i think they do a fairly good job in delivering the dramatic tension via the character's performance and storyline design without relying that much on the character's dialogue. So that you can enjoy the other aspects of the TV drama and guess what is happening there based on screen images without recourse to the Chinese language. Sorry I am thinking a lot about this international fandom but could not figure out why as I am a mandarin speaker.
As for me, i love the costumes and as an escape from reality. Since they always use unreal plots and characters, but most especially the costumes. I don't like modern drama that much
