    I just started following gritty, relatively recently. Man, I am glad I saw this. I was misdiagnosed with ckd by the military(thanks, Uncle sam), and man, did it open my eyes. I've been looking for ways to increase longevity. I dont drink much sugar, but I ate lot of crap and my daughter feins for sugar and processed stuff. You guys have opened my eyes to how much fructose is in everything! I really appreciate you guys in all facets of my life! Stay Gritty!!

    I'm an avid outdoorsman/hunter and have recently be diagnosed with Stage 4 LC. This discussion is exceptionally important for everyone no matter where your health is. I've always been crazy active and what I would say was elite level of fitness, but regularly strayed from a healthy diet with the thought I would just train even harder to get rid of the bad I just ate. Man was I wrong, these are now areas I am hyper aware of now!

    Had a poor diet, lots of stress of running a family business.
    Had a stroke in January of 2010, vertebral arterial tear, clot to my cerebellum.
    Miraculously I had no noticeable motor skill loss. Now I have a long list of things that I have noticed over time that have changed. But I adapt and overcome.
    I decided that I would live strong or not live. Got right back to work. Got right into the gym. Changed my eating habits.
    Brother let me tell you, it was a real tough 6 months after that. Had to set a chair right next to the treadmill. That sudden change from exertion to not would make me dang near pass out. But over time I got better.
    That September of 2010 I hunted my first mountain ever in Colorado. Will never forget it.
    This eating habit thing has evolved over time. Each step getting a little better and understanding a little more.
    These days I count macronutrients for maintenence, weight loss or loading for gains. Honestly I am on an endless maintenence plan. I don't call this a diet, it's a lifestyle. I'm not gonna say I never eat pie or cake, a candy bar with my grandkids. But it's always in my mind of avoiding processed sugar. Don't eat stuff made by man. If it comes from the Earth eat it with moderation. My diet and workouts keep evolving since 2010, geared towards me being able to keep going west each year and all the outdoor stuff I do at home. Of course for my wife, kuds and grand children. I am gonna meet those great great grand children and make them remember me. Elk hunting changed my life man!!
    Now I'm adding bear to that adventure this spring.
    Now at 51 in a week I literally had the dreaded scope done this morning and Dr. said rock solid. Would it be the same had I not had that stroke, had I not changed my ways? That I cannot answer but I bet not.
    I often think about how many people did not get a second chance like I did. How did I get so lucky. Not for me to know, but I'm not gonna waste my days. Any man or woman can make the change. Don't seek immediate gratification, think long term. Where can one be in a year. 2 years...
    Outstanding topic guys, inspiring people to do better and feel better. Information is the most valuable resource on planet earth.
    As always 💪💪

      Love to see that you’re doing so well man and gives me hope for my future. I’m 29 and just had a stroke a month ago while out hunting. I would workout 5 times a week and eat clean and have always stayed away from sugar. Doctors do not know why it happened, but it did. Somehow a blood clot passed through my heart and into my brain stem and an area which affected my vision, causing me to see double for 2 weeks and threw off my balance, which was the only way I knew something was wrong. After my brain scan they noticed I had 2 silent strokes prior to the one that put me in the hospital. Which is odd because I had been feeling incredible. But Like you, I thankfully experienced no motor loss and am fully functional so soon after, but get bad headaches still. I’ve noticed my energy levels have been nothing like before the stroke but getting better nonetheless. Hearing your story helped my perspective even more that I can and will get better. Even better than I was before. Anyway thank you for sharing because you never know who you may help with your story.

      Good for you. It’s hard for me as a 34 yo to quit eating the junk. I’m lucky with decent genes I stay thinner and can still hunt. Your story is making me want to try harder. I have a tough time figuring out a meal plan or menu for myself and my kid. I’m a single parent that works too much so it’s hard to constantly have good meals ready to go. Sometimes I’m just too tired and we grab a pizza or a burger

    I am a big fan of the show and films guys! I like the message to discourage the consumption of highly processed, calorie dense, non-satiating foods. That said, Lustig is bad about conflating mechanisms with outcomes and referencing poorly designed studies with confounders. I urge you to keep an open mind and iterate on your understanding of nutrition. It is generally a bad idea to demonize any foods groups, including sugar. When calories and protein are equated there is immense evidence that sugar is no better or worse for you than other carbs or even fats. Exercise, do not eat in excess, consume adequate protein, do it forever. And hunt a lot of course! Keep up the good work gritty

    I watched this video back in March 24. All my life it's been hard to loose weight I big guy 317 lbs in my 50's. I decided to stop eating sugar, carbs, breads, procesed foods. Started eating mainly one ingredient foods meats, fish, Leafy type salads, avacado, low carb nuts, dairy. No joke, lost 60 lbs. Was not hard, was not starving, was not hungry, I could go 24 hours and not feel hungry. Everything Brian has gone through in last 7 months is same thing I experienced. I will never eat sugar again. You want to get fit do this and your research. I feel like different person. Thanks guys love your videos.

    Outstanding episode, guys! I learned a lot about the science behind the proclamation, "Sugar kills!" Not only that, but you just opened my eyes regarding overheating olive oil. I use olive oil for just about everything, and did not know that heating to its smoke point breaks it down to the disasterous equivalent of transfats oils. I've re-posted your episode to my wife, family, and friends. It is a great motivator to help me do better, even though I thought I was doing good already. A real education today. My wife was a doctor in Cuba and constantly complains how most American doctors are too fast to put someone on a prescription, rather than educate their patients about diet, sugar, and exercise.
    So, a new sticky note for the frig door that reads, "SUGAR KILLS." beside another that reads, "THERE'S NO SHORTCUT ON THE MOUNTAIN, THE MOUNTAIN WILL DEVOUR YOU IF YOU HAVE NOT ADEQUATELY PREPARED TO ENGAGE THE MOUNTAIN." 😁

    One of the big items not discussed here is electrolytes/salt. When you switch from junk food to very healthy, you will get the feeling of lag. Its due to high salt consumption eating junk. You need the electrolytes replenished when working out and you dont get nearly enough even salting foods at every meal when eating 100% whole food.

I'm pretty healthy but I do have gut issues and I eat the bad foods y'all talk about. First thing, try to fix my diet. Got that. But could you guys maybe do a podcast with Hillary and in C student terminology, really spell out what's good to eat and when to eat it? And really what to avoid. Unfortunately I don't have the money to drop a few thousand dollars on a freeze dryer. I wish I did. What's some alternatives? Just break it down and make it simple. • @GrittyGearAndPodcast
      @GrittyGearAndPodcast  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I actually don’t like whey protein in general. I think you’re far better off consuming steak, eggs, cottage cheese, fish, seafood, sugar free greek yogurt, etc. Most whey protein mixes have a lot of trash in them. And although zero-calorie sweeteners are likely better than sweeteners with fructose-you’re still not optimizing your diet. That said, I’m not a food nazi-I still indulge in some unhealthy or suboptimal foods, but I pick and choose-and the timing of the consumption of those foods is carefully considered. And of course, the quantity of those indulgent foods is always kept to a minimum. I believe that feeling strong and healthy is more rewarding than how good something tastes. if you have been consuming a lot of these chemically infused foods, you are likely physically addicted to those foods to some extent. so, don’t be surprised if it’s difficult to stop eating those foods in the beginning. But it has been my experience, that once those foods have been eliminated from your diet they are easy to resist, and in fact, eating them makes you feel sick.

    • @GrittyGearAndPodcast
      @GrittyGearAndPodcast  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nightshade vegetables include potatoes, tomatoes, and eggplant. These vegetables are rich in nutrients and often recommended as staples of a healthy diet. Nightshades contain the alkaloid solanine, which is toxic in high concentrations. It seems that some folks are more intolerant than others to vegetables in the nightshade family. Raw/fresh tomatoes don’t bother me-but cooked tomatoes often upset my stomach and make me feel sick. Everyone’s gut is different and individual. I have learned through elimination diets which foods I thrive on and which foods bother my gut. And that’s my recommendation-do a series of elimination diets and try to determine the foods that make you feel good and foods that don’t. 👍🏼

    Hey guys, sorry you're totally wrong on the details. You're talking about a carnivore diet if you're heading in that direction. The body has zero need for any carbohydrate and fiber is no good at all. The process of glycogenesis creates the glucose your body needs to function. It can get all of this from muscle meat(animal) and its associated fat. You both need to look up, Prof. Bart Kay and watch all of his videos. Especially on the Randall cycle(explains how the cells mitochondria makes energy). Fructose intake is about 7x more damaging than glucose intake(carbs). Caution to you both getting on the topic without any good knowledge of what you are talking about. Most of the so-called experts out there are demonstrably wrong on the topic of nutrition.

      Well, you can call it “bullshit”-but the data on fructose and its derivatives is incontrovertible-at this point, we’re not guessing-the fructose molecule is consumable poison; albeit the negative effects will vary depending on the amount consumed and whether you’re consuming the molecule with or without fiber.
