  • You don't have to spend a fortune to have a wonderful rifle. These Savages under various brand names are tanks and not to be confused with junk guns - these are accurate, tough, affordable and have the hunting "soul" in them. You'll never regret buying one.

When I was young guy, we had a Savage 340 in .22 Hornet in one of our trucks on the family ranch. They were there for general purposes but mostly for shooting coyotes when we saw them.
One day, while putting out cattle feed, a 7 point buck came out of the brush to see what was going on. The deer were not particularly alarmed by us working in the pastures and seeing us driving around to put out feed or other chores. Deer season was open and I had tags on my license. The .22 Hornet is a "legal" cartridge for deer hunting in Texas.
I casually walked around to the door and got the rifle out of the truck, took a rest on the edge of the truck bed, and dropped the buck with one shot.
That is not to endorse the .22 Hornet as a deer cartridge, but it will work and the Savage 340 is NOT a "junk gun". They were/are a very good value for the money, accurate, reliable and durable. My brother inherited that Savage rifle. I you find one for a good price, in good shape, grab it!
Another rifle that was equivalent to it, and was considered "junk" at one time also, was the Remington 788. Another great rifle.

Excellent and true gary K - the 340 and the 788 do everything one needs a rifle to do. The 340 in .222 can be astonishingly accurate and 788s are known for the quality and accuracy they deliver out of all proportion to their price. Thanks for the note.

An excellent example of what makes THIS my favourite TH-cam (Rifle) channel. I clarify that this is my "go to" channel for rifles, because I’m not going to learn much about, or find any historical Formula 1/Le Mans races here. Who was the first to comment on Sven's message? "USOG"/Mike. The man’s got class, and a fantastic variety of rifles! A bolt action 30/30? That’s so crazy, it’s GREAT!

I used to kinda want a savage 340 or a variant of it in 30-30. Seen a few in 222 but not ran into any 30-30s in any shape to buy. I like the idea of reloading it and being able to use spire points unlike in levers.

This was a very popular low cost rifle back in the 60's and 70's. And to attest to that, at least in my neck of the woods, it was VERY rare to find one used. A testament to how well they were liked. I always wanted one but it was put lower on my list of " want to get firearms " and by the time I got around to it they were out of production. I would have loved to have gotten one in .222 Rem or .22 Hornet. I've had a few come by but I couldn't entice the owners to give them up. Whenever the 340 comes up in conversation the one detractor statement that's made is always about the open receiver bridge and the issue of not easily being able to mount a scope. Many aftermarket gizmos have touted the ability to solve the problem but few even came close. So what you generally see, especially with the older guns are attempts by kitchen table gunsmiths and smiths not up to the task trying to drill and tap the left side of the receiver for some variety of scope mount. This generally leads to off center holes, elongated holes, holes with broken taps, poorly placed holes and another redrilled one, scratching due to a wandering bit, holes not square to the receiver or drilled with a hand drill and many other disasters. Of course, before any holes are drilled a base and ring combination that fits and allows for propper sighting and clearance must be found. I would recommend #6 - 48 screws only because any cartridges for this rifle are low recoiling and the larger #8 screws are not warranted. Drilling into rounded stock is always tricky so after carefully marking , and triplechecking hole placement an auto center punch should be used. The barelled action alone should be jiggled up to sit flat and securely to the work platform of your drill press. A short stub drill bit should be used to prevent wandering, and go slow DON'T rush. When tapping, a tap guide is recommended. Or as I often do, leaving the action on the drill press, chuck your tap and lower it to the work and hand turn the chuck to tap your hole. Use plenty of E-Z TAP lube and go slow DON'T rush. You must also decide if you want a blind hole or a through hole. If a through hole is elected, you must insure that your base mounting screws do not enter the inside of rhe receiver and bind the action. They must be checked and if need be filed flush with the receiver wall. It's good practice to degrease all and put red Loctite on the threads, but clean the excess from the inside and leave the bolt out until it's cured. All in all these were fine entry level and economy centerfire rifles the were very well liked. Yes the trigger is far from match grade, and there was only so much that could help it. But if you know what you are doing, and I emphasize KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING, some stoning can help a bit to improve it. Thanks for this video Mike, it's funny how rough cheap rifles like this always seem to hold a special place for most of us. Savage and Stevens are overlooked and have made so many great firearms and in terrific numbers. Your bound to run into one of them in most any gun shop.

I've known quite a few subsistence hunters and believe most internet gun junkies would be upset to know the cost and type of rifles they used. Not just that but the appearance. The appearance of a gun carried and used every day for decades, rain, snow, mud, dirt, dings, dents etc can be shocking. They cared about function.

This is my favourite TH-cam "Rifle" channel...particularly because it’s dedicated to rifles, (a lot of rifles), and Mike makes a concerted effort to answer questions about/requests for certain guns. I fail to understand why anyone would give this a "thumbs down", and can only guess that the people who did were angry that Mike was showing an inexpensive rifle. "Even 'worse', it’s shooting a round meant for a Lever gun!", I jest. It’s a bit more interesting-to me-that this bolt action rifle is chambered in 30/30. Cool rifle, I’d love to have one in my little locker. Thanks, Mike!

I have a 340 30-30win dad bought in '50 or '51. The rifle still wears dad's M1 Garand sling from the war. Rifle has brought down countless whitetail and the three moose he drew upon. For me, it has harvested several whitetail, numerous wild dogs at long range, and five head-shot bears to date. I can drive nails with it's adjustable ramp sight. It's much more comfortable to shoot than the M14's I was issued or the M44 Mosin I once owned. Although it's nothing fancy, I will never buy any other hunting rifle. It was dad's favorite. Although he owed his life to an M1 and talked highly of them, he loved this 340. My only beef is the small magazine capacity, not very handy for packs of wild dogs, but my old 1970 armalite "A1" is great for that

I'm not sure about some of the new rifles though.

I found it in the gun & pawn shop that I frequent, $ 200 bucks out the door and was glad to get it. It sat in the rack for a long time no one wanted it, but I did. I can only imagine all the white tail deer this old gun has taken down and all the wonderful meat that was provided for someone's table.

(I hate the smooth barrel nuts, and if I can;t loosen it I'll just use a monkey wrench to get it off and toss it in the trash) Using an action wrench and the headspace gauges. Now I wish I had not sold or traded ANY of my Savage or Stevens 200 (110 based) rifles, rather than just keep them and order Shaw Barrels in whatever twist rate, barrel length and caliber I choose. (.222 with a 1/8 twist for example). Their barrels are Awesome for the price.

I've had rifles that do that. Try a different rear sight - cheap at most gun stores - quite often the rear sight is not original due to scope mountings and such. A new rear sight can be a shot in the dark - but for me it works most of the time. Best of luck.

I have had one of these for years, I am getting too old to stalk deer in the woods, but I am a handloader and I have gotten many varmints with it loaded with a Speer 110gr. hollow point, and lots of feral hogs over a baited patch from a blind with 165gr. spire point, works like a dream when I do my part. Your three lug action would be an excellent building platform for a bull barrel target rifle. Think of it as a three legged stool vs. a two legged stool of the typical Mauser action. Happy hunting, try feral hogs in, you won't regret it, but don't pay for the privilege, there are plenty of ranchers and farmers that would be delighted to have you do it for free. Feral hogs are all over the Southern USA, East Texas is my favorite, but I've heard that North Texas is desperate for hog hunters, Pecan farmers there have failed harvests from rooting damage from the pigs. It makes good lean pork cuts, you can barbecue on site and salt and freeze the meat.

Great channel, I actually have the same pencil. I found it at a pawn shop. I believe it was made in Germany based on the proof marks. The serial numbers match from the eraser sleeve and the barrel. It was only 25 cents. It appears that a qualified pencil smith sharpened it and not an amateur garage weekend pencil smith. Agh i tend to ramble. Thank you for posting.

Thanks Daren - I wish pencils were made better. Sometimes I sharpen 5 or 6 of those yellow ones and the graphite/lead breaks and breaks.... one out of 6 is a weak average. It may sound funny but people write me about how we seem to have forgotten how to make good pencils or don't want to. The German ones are still okay though - as you know. Take care.

Good rifles. I have a 342 22 Hornet and a Springfield 840(Savage 340) 30-30 Win. Great very inexpensive deer rifle. Both are very accurate for the spartan design. I prefer my Rem. 788 30-30 but have harvested 2 whitetails with my 840.

I have a Stevens 325C in 30-30. I inherited it when my dad passed. The gun was produced 1947, 1948 & 1949. It has no serial numbers so no telling what year it was produced. This gun was modified in 1950 & renamed the Savage 340. Looks identical. I'm going to take it hunting this year in honor of my dad.

After watching this video I found a Savage 340 in 30-30 at a local gun shop and bought it. It looked like a safe queen except for a few small scratches. Anyway it will be my brush gun next deer season. It is fun to shoot and is super handy. Wish the CZ 527 was chambered in 30-30 as i like the trigger and bolt better than the Savage. I guess we can't have everything.... right?

Hi Tom, Thank you - and I had a lot of antlers for sure and horns and rugs...fewer now. Somehow except for the rugs and some tanned hides I never went into taxidermy much - a couple of birds. I like being in the wilds; I like the emptiness and the freedom; sometimes it is as if I could eat the air and I would be well nourished. If I bring home nothing visible - that's okay; the bounty of nature being within me.

@@UnitedStatesOfGuns Each one of my children started out with their very own Model 340 in .30-30Win.
Known for their accuracy, many owners of these fine little rifles parted ways with them after many years of faithful service ... missing a deer ; then mysteriously not being able to restore a tight reliable group.
They were declared "shot out" , just "cheap" firearrms or the side mount scope might get blamed.and were usually replaced with a prettier, more powerful, technically advanced product out of frustration.
I reality it could been something as simple as keeping (tightening) the action screws tight.
Over time the stocks could dry out and shrink. As they became lose repeated firing hammered the recoil lug into the mating surfaces on the stock. The forearms were routered out in a strange manner resulting in small tolerances dependant upon tight screws to maintain contact.
I've been able to repair these with a simple 1/16" shim between the recoil lug and the stock with another under the barrel band between the stoc k and barrel.

I inherited my dad’s savage 340 “2nd Hand 3030” it was manufactured in the 1950s it has a front bead two screw attached sight but the rear dovetail sight Never was there! Where that would attach normally the flat square spot is stamped “MARBLE” The rear Peepsight is a Lyman #40 ! Looks like it came that way new! The oval By the barrel lock Nut has the standard SP savage proof mark and a quarter inch to it has the oval six and I would say a G not perfectly stamped together! Can anyone tell me what I have Specially the “marble stamp” bit ? Thank you for your video very nice!

    Great video.
I received a 340-E from my grandfather, intending to restore it, and unfortunately it's missing the front sight. I'm struggling to find reliable information regarding the height online. I've come across multiple 2-hole 340 front sights that seem to have different heights and it's only left me more confused.
Is this anything you are familiar with? It has a adjustable folding rear sight, if it's of any help.

Thanks for asking. I've owned a few of these. The rifle is obviously sound and quite accurate. The rifle has quite a few parts and is designed for ease of manufacturing and assembly; these are not "bad" characteristics. Still, the value of the Savage is based on utility - which is high praise. On the other hand, the Savage bolts do not aspire to be examples of enlightened gunmaking, artisitc design or collector value. These are workhorse, excellent shooting machines. I hope I have been fair to a very fine series of bolt rifles.
