I love taekwondo took 8 year break and decided to resume training. After doing both ITF and WTF. There is room for sports and demos with flashy kicks and they are great for exposure WTF is for you. If you want to be well rounded and practical ITF is the way.

just a heads up to people about to watch, this documentary is about advertising taekwondo and the history of its promotion in other countries. not about the history and techniques of taekwondo.

To say WT or ITF is better is not correct, what you should compare is your school, if you have a good teacher then you will learn good taekwondo, traditional taekwondo. A teacher who only teaches sparring, or demonstration kicks, or only street fighting techniques is not a good teacher. The WT/ITF debate is not in the spirit of taekwondo and is boring anyway...

More of a person to person preference i like to mix both my hands and feet in. What you see on TV is the sport portion of the martial art which follows WTF sparring rules.
But to say that it's less of a military martial art is bit unfair considering that it was developed by the Korean military. It's like any martial art in that it hones your body into a weapon. Just it's recent popularization in the Olympics has given it a sports label.

So do I. But I do spar a lot with TKD people and Muay Thai. The difference couldn't be more apparent.

Do what many others have done before you, setup a school and bring the art to your community.

However, TKD use a lot more foot though. And the focus is more to sport than actual martial/military art.
