Haahahaha!!! I totally get you! Here in Mexico City the streets are so bad that I0m better off using a MTB, I used to hace a Road bike and it was super uncomfortable
Well, more or less. You have mild temperatures but puddles of mud all winter. We have colder temperatures, but frozen soil and a couple of snow rides. Which is both fun, too. It just starts to be not that much fun when it's just above the freezing point and the frozen ground begins to thaw - then it's muddy AND cold. This winter has been fantastic though so far. Cold, but almost no rain or snow. I just need to find something to keep my fingers warm on the descents, while still giving me enough control of my bars. It's pretty scary if your fingers become so cold that you have no idea if your index finger is actually touching your brake lever or not.
The good thing about a Cross bike is that it makes areas that would be too easy on an MTB really fun. So it makes some areas more technical, but then it makes the boring bits inbetween a lot faster (eg on a fire trail or gravel road) on the CX bike. On my local MTB course, the 'easy' course is a lot of fun on a CX bike, so if that's the sort of terrain you have locally, you may enjoy it more with drop bars.
I disagree. While I do think that it makes things more technical fingering the brakes all the time and worrying about the tires doesn't seem like fun. Plus many trail systems aren't just flat ground. MTB bikes are good for MTB and CX bikes are good for CX
I own both types. A giant trance 29er and a giant revolt gravel bike. Both are great but it really comes down to WHERE you want to ride. If its mostly trails go mountain bike, if mostly road but some trails go gravel. Nice video!
If you have to ride to the place where you're going to ride off road, then a CX bike is great for the roads in between. CX is an "ancient" discipline from a time before proper mountain bikes were around, it's just stubbornly kept going, keeping roughly the same technology (shape of frame and drop bars), which is a good thing as having more cycling variety is great. More types of bikes to own.
I've raced one CX race, and it was this past August. I don't have a CX bike, so I used my Orbea Rallon (FS Enduro Bike). I won my category by over a minute. Granted, I'm C4 in CX, but I'm C1 in XC.... so there's that. I say this because a heavy bike can be fast... but I'm sure I could've been faster (won by over 2 minutes?) on a CX bike.
Where I recently moved to the trails are pretty tame and I have to ride 15kms of flat to get there and back so I got a Cross bike and I've been having loads of fun with it, I'm not really into CX as a sport (I just find barriers, running and group racing lame) but I use it as a super light mtb and it holds up pretty nicely.
I really enjoyed this video, the editing.was spot on and there were some really great shots. The transitions were cool and the whole drag race sprint was great to watch!
Rode a 29 XC hardtail that I bought with aggressive cross tires. Had planned on swapping them out much sooner than I eventually did, they are addictively quick and you can really thread a line.
Having raced both disciplines I know the difference of course, but the way the video was presented, it would seem to someone who didn't know, as if they're interchangeable which to an extent they are but not that much. I think it was like this because they both raced a more MTB orientated track. I think you should've shown some CX footage as they are completely different. Good video though.
Being old enough to remember MTB's pre suspension etc, I do like CX bikes as I guess MTB lite. On smoother climbs they really are very quick, and with a modicum of fitness you can take them down some impressively lumpy descents, It's not my best bike, thats my MTB but it's a fun bike.
Not a fair comparison as the guy on the CX was not familiar with CX riding, while MTB guy is an experienced MTB rider, you should of used Simon Richardson or Lasty on the CX.
CX is really good training for mountain biking. I hadn't been able to make such noticeable gains in cardio and power on my mountain bikes as before I started racing cross. You can also take cross bikes on mellow single track, which is fun!
I think it's not all about fast, it's all about fun. For me a mtb means more fun because of the broader wheels, I feel more confident with them in the woods.
I own a Scott CX & it kicks azz! Said bye, bye to Cannondale once I rode a Scott. Great on "mild" mountain bike trails, but not rocky trails because it has no shock absorbers and kills your backside. Also, riding a Cyclocross on mountain bike trails I have found to be at times dangerous for the mountain bike riders, as you basically are running down MTB riders, so alot of yielding to them. As far as a MTB, no doubt they are more robust. I bet in the flat the MTB in this video feels better because of the better traction.
On that course the winner is not real clear. But if someone needs just one bike to do all three, road, cross and MTB courses then the cross bike wins every time.
Not sure if its the tires or the lycra but when riding to work road bikers easily roll past me while Im pedaling hard and they are just casually coasting along. I may be on a Trek Remedy with 2.35 tires but Im still surprised at how effortlessly faster they are. Really makes me want to get a used singlespeed CX for the commute.
TJ Max Definitely a cx bike is faster and less effort in the city commutes. I ride an old mtb normally and don't whiz by other cyclist often. But sometimes I'll ride my cx bike to work and I feel like a pro passing so many people.
I ride a CX to work and I usually pass everyone except the really hardcore roadie dudes, I think it's the ideal bike for riding on streets that aren't super smooth.
Just a comment for the editors: Around 3:40 Scotty is alone in the left audio channel while Neil is on the right one. In the future can you put both of them on both channels please?
easier to carry around, yes, but mtbs have gotten extremely light over the last few years. the average aluminium CX bike was always around 9kg or so whereas the average aluminium mtb used to be like 15kg. made a huge difference. now... not so much.
Why was neil shooting off in the grass drag race with no competition for the XC bike and the it suddenly cuts the the XC bike winning with no explanation. Please explain
I'd like to see this on an actual cross course with all the cornering and sharp accelerations and off camber stuff to see exactly where and how cross country suffers compared to cross bike and under what condition it was reversed; like a lot of sand vs. little or no sand and a lot of mud or dry course.
Hi there! One detail: In these X vs Y tests, you should swap riders between bikes to make a real compraison of the same rider using two different bikes. If you compare two different riders you just don't know which part of the result comes from the rider and wich part from the bike... Congratulations!
Did you have someone different editing/directing this video? The overall cinematography seems more planned and better executed than normal, I really enjoyed it!
Speaking of CX vs. XC, I'm still waiting for you guys to pit the Lasts against one another. Best leave Scotty at home though: Annie seemed to distract him the last time.
That’s all well and good but nothing like a cx race where it’s mud , mud ,mud be interesting to know which is faster on a cx race course and can be very technical
Can you say a cx bike is a perfekt mix bike for biking uphill and than uphill in the wood or rocky streets. So you can do all with it and it feels more like an racingbike?
I used to have a road bike with disc brakes I threw some knobby tires on it and put a mountain bike crankset on it. I then proceeded to nearly lose my life while taking it on a downhill / mountain bike trail. Best day of my life bahahaha
So what if you take the hard tail and put some cyclocross wheels on it (still tubeless) and swap the flat bar for some drop handlebars? Ultimate cx bike?
I use my MTB on road because the road in my country is so bad that I don't even need to go to a trail 😂
Haahahaha!!! I totally get you! Here in Mexico City the streets are so bad that I0m better off using a MTB, I used to hace a Road bike and it was super uncomfortable
Are you from Philippines man?
Is this Philippines? HAHAHA
Everyday adventure!
only in the philippines
XC or CX call it what ya like as long as we are having fun on 2 wheels its all good :-)
I would say as long as you are having fun. dosen't have to be on 2 wheels.
@@678friedbed doesn't
@@Dkzkdbfks doesnt matter
I know
What if you don't know what type of two wheeled vehicle you are riding?
I continue to enjoy your perception of "winter".
Indeed, must be a really harsh British winter this year!
Winter hadn't fully kicked in when this was filmed! But we are blessed in the UK to usually stay above freezing most of the Winter...

I did cyclocross with a XC bike and it worked well for what it was. It's good fitness for mountain biking.
I've raced one CX race, and it was this past August. I don't have a CX bike, so I used my Orbea Rallon (FS Enduro Bike). I won my category by over a minute. Granted, I'm C4 in CX, but I'm C1 in XC.... so there's that.

This should have been a GCN vs GMBN video.
For sure. Tom Last would have made up those 15 seconds easy. No offense to Neil but Tom vs Scott would have been more of a fair match.
Phil Adams exactly. An experienced CX rider would likely be far less hesitant regarding rocky sections than someone who's only ridden for a few weeks.
Where I recently moved to the trails are pretty tame and I have to ride 15kms of flat to get there and back so I got a Cross bike and I've been having loads of fun with it, I'm not really into CX as a sport (I just find barriers, running and group racing lame) but I use it as a super light mtb and it holds up pretty nicely.
switch bikes and do a second lap !
kendall connolly nice idea but the xc bike is an XL and the cx a S.
also the xc bike is seriously light only one kg difference.
I think his point was that one of the riders could have been faster than the other :o
"winter" - not found in this video
Looks like spring or late summer! ahhh the UK, no pictured though rains every 5/6 days though I bet
Paris has more rainy days than London. Brits just complain more or French prefer to talk about girls rather than weather :)
TheProjectX3 b
If the grass is green it aint winter :P
TheProjectX3 CX isn't even a winter sport it's mostly fall
I really enjoyed this video, the editing.was spot on and there were some really great shots. The transitions were cool and the whole drag race sprint was great to watch!
the forward body position may be terrifying on steep descents
I actually really love cyclocross bikes for urban riding, since they are a little more forgiving on the rough streets and alleyways
Rode a 29 XC hardtail that I bought with aggressive cross tires. Had planned on swapping them out much sooner than I eventually did, they are addictively quick and you can really thread a line.
Cool to c u dudes shredding my local xc loop!!🤘🏼
Was ace!
+sam thomas it is my local trail centre too!!!
Will Loosley how often s u ride up there?
Once a week on average. Maholo!!
Same that's Ashton Court
This was exatly what i was discussing about with some guys here (or maybe on the roadies side). Nice work!
One of the best videos yet lads, great edit and music choice
Love that 2 kind bikes.
I want to see a modern geometry rigid bike with 650+ tires, wide bars short stem ect.
newt buy a hardtail and trade in suspension for rigid shit
newt That used to be all I would ride :c
newt specialized crave sl makes for a pretty decent frame for that type of build just needs a cassete for the back.
Jhaas42 it needs a new wheelset, frame and fork as well because it ain't a plus bike
Skooteh Oh I was just referring to a capable rigid bike. Yeah my bad hahaha.
I waited so much for this video. Thank you very much, guys!
I asked for a video like this and it's finally here. I'm now looking at cyclocross bikes.
Jade Broughton my first year, they are awesome.
Having raced both disciplines I know the difference of course, but the way the video was presented, it would seem to someone who didn't know, as if they're interchangeable which to an extent they are but not that much. Or had one rider ride both bikes . This could just be a comparison between cyclists as well.
The Norcorider should have* #grammar
Faisal Husain get a life!
I have a life. PS. Is it wrong to correct someone if you spot a mistake?
The Norcorider, Si already beat Scot, and on Scot's bike in another video...
CX is really good training for mountain biking. I hadn't been able to make such noticeable gains in cardio and power on my mountain bikes as before I started racing cross. You can also take cross bikes on mellow single track, which is fun!
YESSS! I've always wanted to see XC x CX against in the same conditions!!
I think it's not all about fast, it's all about fun. For me a mtb means more fun because of the broader wheels, I feel more confident with them in the woods.
Sweet video! Awesome music and I like the "On your marks, two, Go!" haha
That's Ashton court estate, I was riding there with a mate earlier, great fun
Descend on the drops, at first it would feel sketchy, but after a while you would notice the handling improvements
edition is going next level guys
I have a rigid mountainbike great for winter/daily duty
Just adding on to the pile of people asking for that awesome tune at 3:45 It sounds epic!
That was an amazingly good quality video, keep up the good work!!
F.O.D a few videos back now Leigh woods / Ashton court. I'm certain i'm going to bump into you guys at some point!
Make sure to say Hi when you do :)
OMG Neil is wearing a GCN cycling kit!
I own a Scott CX & it kicks azz! Said bye, bye to Cannondale once I rode a Scott. Great on "mild" mountain bike trails, but not rocky trails because it has no shock absorbers and kills your backside. Then the rider gets better...
Try cx bike on extreme dh trail.
Drop your bars Neil! That spacer!!
Neil use the bloody drops! You get far more control on the down hill and technical sections
Ah Ashton Court in Bristol nice one! I do that and Leigh Woods pretty much every week 👍
Ashton court Bristol, my local trail.
I play golf there too. super nice!!
Hey GMBN, how long would it take you to edit a video like this?
J S probably outsourced
Not sure if its the tires or the lycra but when riding to work road bikers easily roll past me while Im pedaling hard and they are just casually coasting along. When your winter-bike is a Canyon Exceed...
Seems that those circuit trainings Scott has been doing helped out ! =P
but why did you not hoik the mountain bike onto your shoulders and run it around some of the obstacles on the cross track?
hydra66 because we kno that is possible, you can use a mtb for cx. But the question is if you can use a cx bike for mtbing.
my school bag is heavyer than the cx bike
If you got a carbon frame mtb why not? You cyclists need to hit the weights.
My lunch box for work is heavier than either bike, or both put together.
easier to carry around, yes, but mtbs have gotten extremely light over the last few years. the average aluminium CX bike was always around 9kg or so whereas the average aluminium mtb used to be like 15kg. made a huge difference. now... not so much.
Just proves why I love my cross bike so much. Simply because it can.
Neil is always finding a excuse to wear lycra :V
Would be interesting to see XC bike VS Gravel bike. Because I can fit 29x1,75" tires in my Gravel. So, disadvantage of vulnerable tires would go.
i was the first guy to win a cyclo cross race on a MTB, it was 27 years ago and caused quite a stir in cycling weekly, god i feel old now
4;17 Neils leg! Wow! Cool edit ! :)
"On your marks, two, go!!!"
What the ??? -_-
Lycra just suits certain types of people better than others
I appreciate you helping me decide which bike to bring to Rebeccah’s private Idaho
Those spacers underneath Niels stem reminds of the eiffel tower😂 keep up the good work boyz👍🤘
Why was neil shooting off in the grass drag race with no competition for the XC bike and the it suddenly cuts the the XC bike winning with no explanation. Please explain
I would love to see more in the way of forks compressing in slow motion in your videos.
@ newt . Check out the Charge Cooker line of bikes. Pretty decent!
that is Ashton court isn't it?
It is!

I wonder if they will use this loop again with Emma’s CX training? There are jumps on that first bit of trail now though 😄
wonderful scenery in this video.
I'd like to see this on an actual cross course with all the cornering and sharp accelerations and off camber stuff to see exactly where and how cross country suffers compared to cross bike and under what condition it was reversed; like a lot of sand vs. little or no sand and a lot of mud or dry course.
3:58 Great editing!
Really good job with the video editing :3
At the end is that the same gravel road and puddles that GCN used for the splash guard episode?
Broke my cross bike trying to ride it like a mountain bike there, ironically on the climb you said it was perfect for...
Tom R ooops what happened. I take my CX bike around Cannock chase all the time.
Hi there!
One detail: In these X vs Y tests, you should swap riders between bikes to make a real compraison of the same rider using two different bikes.
If you compare two different riders you just don't know which part of the result comes from the rider and wich part from the bike...
Congratulations!
Man this scott bike is gorgeous !!
I'm so glad to see a CX on here! it's a fun thing to do! so who will be doing CX lessons now ? GMBN or GCBN (global cross bike network) 😉😉😉
Loving you guys up my local trail centre. What did you think of it? And Neil, hat and helmet like that? Surely you haven't gone full roadie.
Love the editing!
Did you have someone different editing/directing this video? The overall cinematography seems more planned and better executed than normal, I really enjoyed it!
Nice to see long Ashton
Speaking of CX vs. XC, I'm still waiting for you guys to pit the Lasts against one another. Best leave Scotty at home though: Annie seemed to distract him the last time.
Thumb up like if you think Annie would win?
Well, whoever comes first, they'll both be Last. (Sorry, I couldn't resist.)
That’s all well and good but nothing like a cx race where it’s mud , mud ,mud be interesting to know which is faster on a cx race course and can be very technical
Strange vs. You can also compare it with a rond bike this way. Each bike is meant for a different terrain
Best solution is to get a cx frame, tubeless 35mms and a lefty.
What happened at 4:30 ? In the drag race, Neil easily passed and went away from Scott, but in the end, Scott arrived first?
Love the editing
Global Mountain Bike Network can you do more videos in Bristol? The old pump track has been re-shaped and re-surfaced??
what about long distance all terrain tours?
Looks like Ashton Court. Martyn's Bristol residence.
Is is Hopton Woods where you guys normally ride looks sick!
I'm worried about neil, any excuse to squeeze into some lycra
Can you say a cx bike is a perfekt mix bike for biking uphill and than uphill in the wood or rocky streets. So you can do all with it and it feels more like an racingbike?
I used to have a road bike with disc brakes I threw some knobby tires on it and put a mountain bike crankset on it. I then proceeded to nearly lose my life while taking it on a downhill / mountain bike trail. Best day of my life bahahaha
At 3:55 what was that rule on gentlemen rules... was it... don't snake lol
I think racing is an exception. LOL
Funny, at 2:20 you really need a better tripod lol
Last vs Last. Make it happen GMBN!
It would be interesting to see both bikes with same tire width. ...Xc vs mx
hate it...that 29er these days come with one or two tiny chainrings up front...lowers the overall gears ratio..
lol nice lycra dom ashton court never looked so fun
Still can't get my head around the lack of suspension and the thin tires.
That Canyon Exceed is boss!
So what if you take the hard tail and put some cyclocross wheels on it (still tubeless) and swap the flat bar for some drop handlebars? Ultimate cx bike?
I think a CX Bike might be the best for ways in and outside Cities
