Thanks for the amazing content. I booked my first flight to Canada this September and i’m binging half of you videos, super helpful. I can’t find the app on the app store, perhaps I need to be in Canada for it to pop up? You look stunning FYI
Great breakdown of how to use the TTC and the Presto card. The info about the different transit apps really makes it easy to stay on schedule for newcomers!
Google Maps has improved so much over the years. I still remember the days when I’d say I want to go from Scarborough to downtown Toronto and it would tell me to take the GO train and how some addresses would be off by two or three blocks 😅
PS: I don’t use auto reload, I feel it’s too dangerous. If your chequing account is low auto reload can easily go into overdraft and you’d end up paying a lot extra. TTC now shows how much is left on your Presto card so I see no reason to use auto reload any more.
That won't happen as long as you set a low enough limit. E.g. if you set a threshold of $20 with autoreload of $20, your card will only get charged a maximum of $20 once your presto balance drops to $20. Also, I attach my credit card (instead of debit) to my presto account, so unless I'm close to my credit limit (which I never am), there's never a problem.
Everything excelent! Also, it's important to read in the subway the name of the stations if the lights of the subway or there's no sinchronisation of G.Maps with the station you want to go.
Buses will usually crank (can't find the word here) the bus down to level with the pavement, then provide a ramp for wheelchair users or even baby strollers. Subway stations have elevators. Hope this helps!
Thank You. Is it possible to pay via phone using NFC? example I don't use my physical Bank Card. Just use Google Pay, which is connected to my Debit or Credit cards.
Thanks for the video. A lot of city transit systems are beginning to be set up to allow you to tap a credit card, as an alternative to the fare card, when entering the subway/bus. Does Toronto allow this?
thank you so much for this video!! it’s helped me a lot, i did have a question tho- is only one person allowed to use the presto card? i’m traveling with 2 friends for 5 days and we are all going everywhere together, do we all need a presto card? or can i enter and use it and then hand it to my friend for her to use then once she’s done she hands it to the last friend; well mainly be using the street cars if that helps!! we’re trying to save money where we can and figured if we can use just one card we can save $12 buying 2 more lol- thank you!!!
Different people can use the same Presto card, but not at the same time. So if you travel together, each of you would need to get one. If you’re only traveling for 5 days you can also consider buying single ride fares.
Thank you! I'm visiting Toronto for the first time from New York and any new public transportation system confuses me, so I gotta do some research first. I was hoping there's a way to just use our credit cards directly like the OMNY here in NY. I'll be in the city for 6 nights so perhaps, getting the Presto card is a decent option. Plus, it's a good souvenir too I guess lol
Unfortunately that's not possible yet (on the TTC), so yes you'd need to get Presto. I actually prefer using presto rather than my credit card. Imagine how many times you take out your card everyday (especially if you're here longer!) and the card could easily get lost. On the other hand, if I lose the presto card (and registered it), I still keep the balance. Yes about the souvenir haha!
@@LivinginCanadaI am visiting Toronto very soon and I was planning to use my credit card to tap in on the bus... I thought it said it was okay on the TTC website. Is it not the case? 😥

Maybe silly question but when you ride the bus, example yrt or viva, do you tap it on the machine at the bus station or the machine inside the bus or both? Thanks so much
I've only used the TTC so far. When you take the bus, you tap on the bus (for GO bus tap on and off), same for streetcar, you just tap on in the streetcar when you hop on. For subway train, you tap at the gate when you go in. Hope this helps!

Helloo, can we tap twice the presto card? lets say i buy one presto card to use it for two people? or do we need to buy one presto card for each person?
Hello. Very useful video. I’ve been in Toronto for a week now and my question might seem dumb but I’m still having trouble figuring out in which direction to take the subway or street car. I can’t seem to find in anywhere on streetcars stops or bus stops. And in the subway it usually only say southbound and northbound which I find confusing. Do you have a tip ?
Thanks, glad to hear that! It's easiest to orient yourself by finding out what the last stops of a route is, and match that with the direction displayed on the subway/bus/streetcar. I would start with the route you take most frequently. E.g. subway line 2: Go to ttc.ca to get the map so you can see the stations along line 2. Westbound would go toward Kipling, while Eastbound would go toward Kennedy. It's the same for buses, e.g. "Humber loop" displayed on Bus 80 means it goes west. I hope I answered your question!
I need a question answered when I take the bus and I’ll pay for my ticket and when I reach my stop and need to take a next bus do I pay for another ticket or use the same ticket that I got at the first bus stop
It's best to use a Presto card, that way you just tap each time you board, and the machine will calculate the fare automatically (including applying the free 2-hour transfer). If you buy a physical ticket, you need to stamp when you transfer from one station to another. I have not done this myself though.
I have a question regarding the 2-hour timeframe, if for example you take the streetcar then need to take the bus. Do you need to tap twice? If so are you deducted $6.50 for tapping twice? Or just $3.25 due to the two hour time frame? Another example would be going to and back from a stop. Say you go to duffering st for just 30min, can you go back the same way and not be charged twice?
About the first question: Yes, you need to tap every time you change from-to subway/bus/streetcar of the TTC, that way the system can keep track whether or not you're still within that 2-hr window, but you'll only pay that one fare. As long as it's within that timeframe it won't deduct twice. But once you go just a second above that 2-hrs you'll be charge again, so I'd recommend to take note of when you first tapped on. About the second question: The 2-hr time frame is counted from the moment you first tapped. In the meantime you can take any route, it doesn't matter, you'll only be charged once. Hope that helps!
Why does it say on the ticket that it expires in four months but yet it only works once? That doesn't make any sense. Of course it also doesn't make any sense that I bought a $3.25 ticket and it's good for 4 months. Why have that on the ticket if it's not true?
As long as you don't obstruct other passenger's path it should be okay. Bus drivers are usually pretty accommodating. The bus to YYZ has a special luggage storage compartment.
Thanks for the video. If I understand correctly, we can transfer from subway to streetcar or subway to subway without paying a 2nd fare if we’re in the 2-hour transfer window? Can I also use it for return trip if I do not exceed the time frame? Thanks!
Yes, that's right! All that matters is that your last tap doesn't exceed 2 hours since your first tap (note the exact time). Just one second over and you'll have to pay a second fare! In between you can do as many trips as you want.
Additionally, if I have understood right, that if we are transiting from TTC to Subway or vice versa, within the 2-hour window, is it required to tap again to open up pathway for subway or the bus entry?? And even if we do so, the money will not be deducted since it's within the window?
Hi! Thanks for this video! I'm travelling to Toronto next week for 2 days, so I was wondering about the single fare. How does it work? Can I buy a ticket with cash and/or a card? How does the transfers work? 😊
I've actually never purchased a single fare, but you can buy it either on the bus or from the fare vending machine. On the bus you pay cash, as far as I know but you can use card on the machines. For transfers I believe you need to get/print out what's called a pop (proof of payment). Anyone who's done this before, please feel free to add/correct!
If I'm doing a jouney which involves Subway & Bus, do I only tap on at the subway entrance & that's it? (I don't have to tap off when leaving the bus?)
Is it possible to still use cash payment on bus and subway? I will be in Toronto and plan to only use public transport a small amount and don't want to buy a Presto card.
You can use cash on the bus, I'm not sure about paper money, I've never seen that. On the subway you can use cash to buy tickets from the fare vending machine.
I haven't tried it yet, but I think you can (I read about it but not sure if it has been implemented yet)! Will definitely make a video if I ever try it!
@@LivinginCanada I reached out to Presto. We can use Presto Contactless / Apple Pay on UP train but not on TTC yet. They have some plans on the horizon but no ETA.
The TTC monthly pass is the fare, while Presto card is just the payment system. You can load different fares for different regions within the GTA to your Presto card.
I've never heard of those, interesting! But I surely don't remember seeing any machines that accept those coins, as far as I know. The new system, Presto is really practical!
@@LivinginCanada so I did some more research..it seems like you can't buy them anymore but the ttc said they still will let you use them to ride trains....so wooo hooo free public transit for me! Now I can focus on trying to find a dispensary and a good place to eat!
That's awesome! Cool that they're doing that. I looked up the coins and they're really pretty, I could imagine them becoming vintage/collector's item some day, make sure to keep some for yourself! :)
Another tip I got is even if you can a presto card you should still grab a transfer when you get to a subway station and when you plan on switching from the subway to a bus or streetcar, it really helps because even when you are outside of the 2-hour window you can go with one fare and you can show that you already paid if lost. Edit just make sure your not reentering a subway station where you have to show your transfer because that isn’t allowed
Can presto card be use for both bus travel and at the subway too? I heard that there is a special plan for students where we have to pay 120-130 CAD per month through which we can travel Toronto without any limits. So this includes both bus and subway, right?
@@jugalpatel276 Yes that is what a presto card is for. If you are talking about a TTC bus then all you do is tap once and go on your way and you do not need to tap again until you leave the TTC system. If you are talking about YRT and GO transit a presto card also works except those systems will deduct their own fares. YRT 3.03 for youth/students under 18 and GO depends on where you are going though typically under 3 bucks. As for the monthly pass I think for students it is 119 dollars but you need to go to bathurst subway station to get your student ID I think but I would recommend you just pay with regular presto card instead of buying a monthly pass as unless you are going everyday 2 to 3 times a day you probably won't be getting your moneys worth also don't forget by tapping your presto card you are getting a 2 hour free transfer period based on the system you tap on (besides GO transit) where you can go out of the system and lets say go to a coffee shop or the way I use it go to a mall and tap on quickly so I can ride to and from all for the same 2.25$
@@berniekatzroy If you are an adult (19 and above) and you have access to a credit card then no because you can pay Presto price without paying for a Presto card (be wary of international charges though) or if you have an Android then starting Tuesday, November 21st, 2023 you can put a presto card for free in google wallet (sadly not on IOS unfortunately. Even if you do not have a credit card or are not an adult just buying tickets or using coins is much better because, for a presto card, you need to actually use transit often to cover the initial 4$ cost. PS if you get on buses or even at subway station if you stop the presto fare $3.30 in a variety of coins and just a toonie, loonie, and a couple coins then the driver will give you a ticket but the rule is that a driver cannot tell you anything on a bus if you do not pay. If you have more questions or need me to clear anything up please feel free to DM me here :)
Can presto card be used for both bus travel and at the subway too? I heard that there is a special plan for students where we have to pay 120-130 CAD per month through which we can travel Toronto without any limits. So this includes both bus and subway, right?
Yes that's correct! Presto card is for bus, subway, streetcar, and even GO transit. There is a Postsecondary student monthly pass and yes it cover the first three. Just for using GO, you'd need to pay extra and load money on your card.
At every subway station, before you go down the stairs you'll see the signage. It points to west/east, or north/south, and lists down the stops and the final destination.
The balance shows on the tapping device (or whatever it's called) on the bus/streetcar. I don't remember if it shows on the subway gates, perhaps others can add? In any case I'd strongly recommend using the auto-reload function, by using this you'll never need to worry about the balance dropping to zero. Cheers!
Yes you can use your credit card! I actually recommend that, because if you auto-charge it to your bank account, some bank account charge transaction fees that can pile up. I link my credit card to it, so it's easy to have in one bill.
Glad to hear,m that! Don’t forget to register your card on the presto website, that way you won’t lose your money in case you lose the card. Enjoy your trip!!

So, I’m going on the ttc for the first time soon and when I put my route into Google maps sometimes it shows that my bus stop is in middle of the road. Does this mean I walk into the road? I don’t really get it lol
Haha, if I understand correctly, that might mean that there is a sort of an 'island' stop in the middle. So the bus doesn't stop at the side of the street, but in between street and street car. Yes, from there you would need to cross the street. That could be what it means.
For TTC, when we get on to another ride, so for instance at 2pm I get into the subway and decide that at 3pm I want to head back using the subway, when I tap my PRESTO card, will that ride back be deducted from my card or not, considering that I have an unlimited ride for 2 hours?
Any taps you do within that exact 2 hour timeframe will not result in a 2nd fare deduction. But the second you're over the 2 hours, another fare will be applied. It doesn't matter how long your ride lasts after tapping, what counts is the moment you tap. Hope that helps!
4 years ago i went to toronto a few months and i used the mensual plan on the presto , that i thik that was mor convinent because of the price of the rides or the tokens , tap tap everyone

Thank you so much.
Not sure it this came too late, but yes, there are cheaper senior prices if you use the presto card. But if you're just staying for 4 days it might not be worth paying $5 for the card itself. Yes you can get the day pass, but the price is same for seniors as far as I know!
Next generation of transit users. As a baby boomer and when I grew up in Toronto from the 1960s to the 1980s, your options were cash, tokens or tickets-no Presto Card much less a Metro Pass.
I've briefly experienced paper ticket options, but that was during my time in Germany. We didn't feel like we were missing digital options back then I guess, worked out fine :D But now that we have these, it is quite practical!
I have a query: If I tap my presto card for a bus ride(10 mins) and later I use Subway to travel to another destination. So at the subway station, I need to tap again to enter the station(please update if I'm correct). The 2nd tap which I did, will it deduct the amount from the card?
After you get off the bus and enter the subway station, you will need to go through the gates which require you to tap, so you won't miss it. Once you tap, your fare will be deducted (unless it's within the 2 hours, in which case you won't be charged again). This website might help for further details, there's a differentiation between 'paid' area and 'unpaid area' of the station. Hope that helps! www.ttc.ca/Fares_and_passes/PRESTO/FAQ.jsp#:~:text=Tap%20your%20PRESTO%20card%20every,not%20be%20charged%20another%20fare. You can use those to request the bus to stop at the next station (alternatively to the red buttons on the poles). I prefer those wires because I can just use my elbow instead of having to press the button! Also, those are easily accessible from any seat, hope that clarified it!

Additionally, if I have understood right, that if we are transiting from TTC to Subway or vice versa, within the 2-hour window, is it required to tap again to open up pathway for subway or the bus entry?? And even if we do so, the money will not be deducted since it's within the window?
so useful for my upcoming TORONTO adventure
Glad this was useful!! Enjoy Toronto!
Same here, traveling soon to Toronto for the first time and this video was sooooo much helpfull!
How to down load rocket google map syncrinising Presto card video
I’ve never done that, sorry.
Can you use your credit card to tap at the bus?
Can I use the credit to the fare?
If I'm doing a jouney which involves Subway & Bus, do I only tap on at the subway entrance & that's it? (I don't have to tap off when leaving the bus?)
Thanks for the info it was really helpful with planning for my vacation to Toronto!
Which card is for Mississauga to Toronto and Toronto to Mississauga
Thank you for providing such informative video, can I use presdo card in any area of GTA like oshawa, or just the city of Toronto?
What is the cost of this 2 hours window?
Now it's gone up by a few cents to $3.30.
Thank you for the video. Now, what if I want to pay for someone else as well for ttc and or go?
If they use the TTC regularly, I would suggest getting them their own Presto Card.
@@LivinginCanada double tap? How would double tap work on GO?
On GO you have to tap on when you board, and tap off when you leave the bus/train.
from where can i buy a presto day pass ticket?
Is it possible to still use cash payment on bus and subway? I will be in Toronto and plan to only use public transport a small amount and don't want to buy a Presto card.
You can use cash on the bus, I'm not sure about paper money, I've never seen that. On the subway you can use cash to buy tickets from the fare vending machine.
great explanation, detailed. thanks
Glad it was useful!
How do I track bus movements using google maps? Does it show there?
Google doesn’t track the movement, for that you can use the app
@@LivinginCanada Sorry, use which app tontrave movements ?
Can we use Apple Pay to pay off on Presto machines in all transits like TTC / Subway / MiWay / York Transit/ Go ?
I haven't tried it yet, but I think you can (I read about it but not sure if it has been implemented yet)! Will definitely make a video if I ever try it!
@@LivinginCanada I reached out to Presto. We can use Presto Contactless / Apple Pay on UP train but not on TTC yet. They have some plans on the horizon but no ETA.
If I press the button, will it stop at where the next bus stop is, or will the bus stop immediately? Thanks for the video!
If you mean the red button (or also the yellow cord!), yes it will stop at the next stop.
What’s the difference between Presto monthly pass and TTC monthly pass?
The TTC monthly pass is the fare, while Presto card is just the payment system. You can load different fares for different regions within the GTA to your Presto card.
I found a sock full of little ttc coins. Can I still use those or turn them in for credit on the new system?
Is there such thing as TTC PRESTO day passes?
Thankz you many of your tips helped me
Glad to help!
Say I pay in cash, for how long is my bus ticket valid?
Can i tap unlimitedly, if i have a monthly pass?
Would you say public transportation is as good as it is in Japan or some European countries?
Simple and beautiful,thanks.
As for the monthly pass I think for students it is 119 dollars but you need to go to bathurst subway station to get your student ID I think but I would recommend you just pay with regular presto card instead of buying a monthly pass as unless you are going everyday 2 to 3 times a day you probably won't be getting your moneys worth also don't forget by tapping your presto card you are getting a 2 hour free transfer period based on the system you tap on (besides GO transit) where you can go out of the system and lets say go to a coffee shop or the way I use it go to a mall and tap on quickly so I can ride to and from all for the same 2.25$
Question, is it worth getting a presto card if I'm only in Toronto for a few days?

Yes that's correct! Presto card is for bus, subway, streetcar, and even GO transit. There is a Postsecondary student monthly pass and yes it cover the first three. Just for using GO, you'd need to pay extra and load money on your card.
@@LivinginCanada Thanks for clearing my doubt in such a short time.😀
How do I understand which TTC or subway is going my destination ?
At every subway station, before you go down the stairs you'll see the signage. It points to west/east, or north/south, and lists down the stops and the final destination.
Do TTC PRESTO readers show balance when you swipe your PRESTO card on the bus, streetcar fare readers and when you swipe on the subway gates?
The balance shows on the tapping device (or whatever it's called) on the bus/streetcar. I don't remember if it shows on the subway gates, perhaps others can add? In any case I'd strongly recommend using the auto-reload function, by using this you'll never need to worry about the balance dropping to zero. Cheers!
Yes
Hi - Can you load presto card only if you have a bank account or can I use credit card as well to load the Presto card?
Yes you can use your credit card! I actually recommend that, because if you auto-charge it to your bank account, some bank account charge transaction fees that can pile up. I link my credit card to it, so it's easy to have in one bill.
Thank you. I will buy the card at the airport. Your channel is helping me plan. Cheers from Vancouver Island.
Glad to hear,m that! Don’t forget to register your card on the presto website, that way you won’t lose your money in case you lose the card. Enjoy your trip!!
hi! where can you get it from the airport??
@@luwithajane I found a place in the Airport to buy our cards before the big queue at the GoTrain. Sorry I can't remember more than that. It was easy to spot the card machines.
Can we travel Brampton to Toronto via presto card or it's just eligible in Toronto
I’ve never used it in Brampton, but as far as I know the Presto card can be used in Brampton as well.
Hi how about riding YRT? Do i have to tap when i get off the bus?
I’ve actually never took the YRT, but I think you can use presto as well. Perhaps anyone can help?
Nice tip btw live in mississauga just west of toronto and for my public transit schedule app instead of rocketman i just use transit which is similar to me but great video
So the app you're using in Mississauga is called 'transit'? Thank you, good to know!
no problem
You can’t Apple Pay on? 😢
I heard you can, but haven't tried it myself yet.
I dream of visiting Toronto one day, if it comes true, I'd definitely want to tour the City with you. Will be so great
here in Toronto people come 2 close to you wether they r waiting in line or for the bus.
I also wished they'd space out a bit more.
u need 2 reach awareness about the topic 2 the parliament or maybe 2 ur local dean but I feel its more a federal subject than district.
@@LivinginCanada thank you so much!
What if I am going to north York can I use my presto card there?
Reply is a bit late but yes you can1
How to use the subway?
Thank you for useful content! Good luck
Thank you!
4 years ago i went to toronto a few months and i used the mensual plan on the presto , that i thik that was mor convinent because of the price of the rides or the tokens , tap tap everyone
Hii! I currently have the presto card with a monthly fare, does that apply to the Go also? Or do I have to pay extra? :)
GO is separate, unfortunately!
Hi, great video! question, do all buses have pesto card?
Yes, the buses in the GTA have the presto card machine to tap on!

could you make a tourist guide for people visiting Toronto from other countries? I don't know if you have one already I just subbed to your channel.

Am a senior age65 asian , 1st time travelling solo to Toronto for 4days in toronto and 3days in niagara falls, kindly advise if there is presto card for seniors or i just buy the online 15$ one day pass for my trip to niagara falls and cross over to US from buffalo.
the next in the city of toronto i have 4days how would you advise me to make presto card fruitfull please?
Very usefull, thanks for information about 💖🤗💖
You're welcome!

I have a query:
If I tap my presto card for a bus ride(10 mins) and later I use Subway to travel to another destination.

Do I need to tap on a bus in the paid area if I have already tapped into a subway station?
No you do not need to tap your PRESTO card when you board a bus in the paid area of the station.
Do I need to tap into a subway station if the bus that I’m on doesn’t go into the paid area?
Yes. You will need to tap into the subway station however you won’t be charged a second fare.

You forgot to tell us what the yellow wires installed in the buses are for
You can use those to request the bus to stop at the next station (alternatively to the red buttons on the poles). I prefer those wires because I can just use my elbow instead of having to press the button! Also, those are easily accessible from any seat, hope that clarified it!
