  • Answers in Genesis, a fundamentalist Christian apologetics organisation chaired by Ken Ham, think that racial prejudice can be blamed on society's belief in evolution. Yeah, seriously. I happen to disagree.

      Esᴘɪᴏɴᴀɢᴇ Uɴɪᴛᴇᴅ it's well known that Darwin was racist, just like everyone else in Britain at that time. he was wrong about that. so what? you do know that the evolutionary theory we have today is much more complex than Darwin ever thought, right? Darwin was a great scientist and he had a revolutionary idea about the diversity of life, but he wasn't an unfallable prophet, he was just a person and he was wrong about some things. that doesn't make the theory of evolution racist.

    Blaming evolution for racism is kind of a strange charge. Science will record some finding and then it is up to the various cultures to apply those finding wisely. It seems to me that there was slavery and racism before the time of Darwin. As for the Bible talking about slavery, that's the least of its shortcomings.

    • @jimsstuff2201
      @jimsstuff2201 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      miss south no. One title made reference to “favored races” but that was in reference to race as in the human race, ie a synonym of species. vHe certainly said a lot of racist things in his journal The Voyage of the Beagle, but Darwin being racist like every other Englishman of the time doesn’t make the theory of natural selection racist. Humans are a single species. The theory of evolution by natural selection just explains how speciation occurs. It says nothing about the cultural/phenotypical groupings we call race.

    Yesterday i had someone call me racist for explaining to them what a subspecies was when talking to them about dogs and wolves. They said if i thought dogs were a subspecies then i thought black people were a subspecies too. i was like WTF. Below is what they said. Keep in mind we were taking about dogs and wolves. Nothing to do with humans at all.
    Wolves can't give birth to something that's not it's own kind. And your explanation was rather racist as well which isn't surprising considering most darwinists are huge racists to begin with.
    So basically white people and black people are different subspecies, so I'm to assume that if white people evolved from black people in Africa, that means blacks are less evolved than whites.
    Or, you can admit that whites and blacks aren't more or less "Evolved" and were always that way.

      spaveevo I just . . . Wow. I had a teacher who'd make arguments like that constantly and didn't seem to have any basic grasp of how evolution works. She always spent at least half of class preaching instead of teaching. I was still a Christian at the time, but she once had this bullshit argument for creationism something along the lines of "You are alive, therefore you have a soul, therefore God." So I asked her if that meant animals had souls, and then so everything would still fit her "theory" she came to the conclusion that they had "half-souls" which meant they could only go to heaven. She was . . . interesting.
      Since it's a Christian school we're all supposed to pray before school and lunch. After I became an atheist I eventually stopped bothering to pretend to, and once she looked up at me and was so overwhelmingly enraged, it was kind of scary.
      She's the kind of person who would fall for any ideology as long as she's the victim. She would accuse the owners of sexism because she got paid less than the male teachers (even though they had years of experience there and everyone knew she was a crappy teacher).
      Unfortunately I'm stuck at this shitty school for another three and a half years. My parents own it, I have no choice. And it's HORRIBLE.

      Saren Areth It's not like us black people stopped evolving after the common ancestors of all Eurasians left Africa, am I right? Too bad some people genuinely believe this. If we did, we would either all look like the San people or Pygmies. Look at the differences between archaic Homo sapiens (found in Morocco to be 310,000 years old and thanks to the DNA of a San child, up to 350,000 years old), Homo sapiens idaltu, and Homo sapiens sapiens, which is every human being alive today. There are differences, however slight, between Archaic Homo sapiens and modern Homo sapiens.

    That biblical verse is espoused throughout the Civil War as to the south's justification of slavery! lol The Creationists want to ignore that fact that their book has that in it! Don't take me wrong I personally detest slavery and racism but their foundation, the Bible, does not truly condemn slavery and they know it! Ironically they pretend it doesn't! lol Hypocrite much??! :)

      Werner Heisenberg They entered into a covenant to seek the Lord, the God of their fathers, with all their heart and soul; and everyone who would not seek the Lord, the God of Israel, was to be put to death, whether small or great, whether man or woman. (2 Chronicles 15:12-13 NAB)
      If a man commits adultery with another man’s wife, both the man and the woman must be put to death. (Leviticus 20:10 NLT)
      If one curses his father or mother, his lamp will go out at the coming of darkness. (Proverbs 20:20 NAB)
      Whoever strikes his father or mother shall be put to death. (Exodus 21:15 NAB)
      “If a man lies with a male as with a women, both of them shall be put to death for their abominable deed; they have forfeited their lives.” (Leviticus 20:13 NAB)
      Corinthians 11:7 - 9*7 For a man indeed ought not to cover [his] head, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man.
      8 For the man is not of the woman; but the woman of the man.
      9 Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man.34. Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but [they are commanded] to be under obedience, as also saith the law.
      35 And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.
      (Woman to be silent in church. A woman is not to speak in church)
      22 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.
      23 For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.
      24 Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so [let] the wives [be] to their own husbands in every thing.
      25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;
      (Wives must submit themselves to their husband, afterall he is the head of the wife)
      18. Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord.
      (Wives submit to their husband -- the Lord expects it)
      9. In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;
      10 But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.
      11 Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection.
      12 But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man but to be in silence.
      13 For Adam was first formed, then Eve.
      14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.
      15 Notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety.
      (Women not to wear braided hair, gold, pearls, or costly array.
      Women must learn in silence. Women are not to teach and not have
      authority over men. Women must be silent. Adam was created first,
      then Eve. A woman was deceived, but Adam was not deceived)
      2 For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to [her] husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of [her] husband.
      (woman bound to her husband for life)
      3 The aged women likewise, that [they be] in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things;
      4 That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children,
      5 [To be] discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.
      (Women to obey their own husbands)
      1. Likewise, ye wives, [be] in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives;
      2 While they behold your chaste conversation [coupled] with fear.
      3 Whose adorning let it not be that outward [adorning] of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel;5 For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands:
      6 Even as Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whose daughters ye are, as long as ye do well, and are not afraid with any amazement.
      7 Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with [them] according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.16. Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire [shall be] to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.
      (Women will be ruled by men)
      Leviticus 12:2 *2 Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, If a woman have conceived seed, and born a man child: then she shall be unclean seven days; according to the days of the separation for her infirmity shall she be unclean.Leviticus 12:55 But if she bear a maid child, then she shall be unclean two weeks, as in her separation: and she shall continue in the blood of her purifying threescore and six days.
      (Woman unclean for 7 days if she gives birth to a man child.
      She is unclean for 14 days to 66 days if she gives birth to woman child)
      22 For he sent letters into all the king's provinces, into every province according to the writing thereof, and to every people after their language, that every man should bear rule in his own house, and that [it] should be published according to the language of every people.4 How then can man be justified with God? or , how can he be clean [that is] born of a woman?
      (Any man born of a woman is unclean)
      the head of the woman [is] the man; and the head of Christ [is] God.

    Hey, CosmicSkeptic, I really like your videos and I call myself agnostic atheist after having been a conservative Christian for many years. I'm not that content with your video today - and that's not because of the topic - but I have known you to be very fair, neutral and open-minded about the most stupid arguments from religious people. In this video, you have - at least that's my impression - not stuck to these premises and I missed that.
    Yes, there are verses about slavery in the bible, but Christians can always argue, that those rules made the then-current circumstances better than they were before. The "eye for an eye" rule was better than war between tribes and the slave-rules might have been better than whatever was around at that time. By pointing a finger to the existence of slavery-related texts in the bible without putting them into context or adressing those counter-arguments, it felt a bit more biased than usual - which is fine by me, but it will rather put believers into a defensive position instead of making them think about the excellent points you have.
    Again, I love your videos, I love your channel and the text you chose is great for this time! If you could go back to being a bit more neutral though, I think it would be even more perfect. Keep up the good work!

    I'm agnostic and also work in the scientific field and the fact you use the phrase "scientific fact" discounts everything you say. The fundamental ideal behind what science is is that there is no such thing as facts. Especially saying you're a skeptic, skeptics don't use absolutes. Learn to be a skeptic properly. WAKEISLAND99 He explained that evolution is not a ladder; it's just a tree with different branches. I would have said it's just a bunch of lateral movements. Evolution is the description of how life diversified on Earth with no other implications. Saying that a race is inferior to some other race or that a species is inferior to some other species is a product of the human mind. Those distinctions don't exist in nature.

    • @jeanpull1
      @jeanpull1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@exiledfrommyself Some random mutations or genetic combinations create variations in a species that make a life form less equipped to thrive and reproduce in its environment. Those genetic branches could be considered inferior, in the context of survival of the fittest.

    Re: "Superior"
    This actually _can't_ be true because "superior" in this context is an entirely subjective term that depends on specific functionality. Our mouths may be superior to alligators' for the purpose of making multiple sounds, but we are inferior if you want to bite an animal in half.
    What you could say is that one form appeared earlier on the chain and that the latter form is colloquially "more evolved", but that doesn't lead to superiority either.... unless you mean that it is "superior" to still be alive, but by that standard only tells us that all extant species are equally better than extinct ones. Great, glad we got that settled.
    Once again, you are being far too generous with your concessions. :)

      Out of interest, I am curious about one element of this topic actually. Do you think evolution had any part in white supremacy; or do you think it was just one of the ways society could just turn out through social interaction? I am currently living in Vietnam, and it is curious how so many Viets are trying their best to become as white as possible. Just curious as to whether you think this is a social pressure or it is evolution steering people this way. Sorry if this is dumb question.

    • @pflernak
      @pflernak 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Various groups have held a dominant position throughout history. Empires rise and fall. SOME "white people" were just the last in a long list and advances in technology allowed for a greater reach and made domination easier.
      Farm tools for example can quite easily be turned into effective melee weapons. Making improvised guns is not as easy. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_scythe
      Ive been wondering how difficulty of life has affected innovation. Especially in the context of early civilizations. On one hand hard conditions might force people to seek new solutions to their problems. On the other hand without a sufficient surplus of resources its difficult to have the means, time or educated people to innovate. So my guess is that some balance of the two provided the greatest results.

    This whole argument also has to take into account that evolution is not something good or bad. it is not necessarily a fault to be less evolved (or should it not just be differently evolved?), because it is much less about intellectual capabilities than it is about physical features. We have hardly evolved at all! Societal, ethical or even technological progression and ARE NOT equal to evolution in the Darwinist sense of the word; although we have learnt to look down and capture/use creatures 'less evolved' than us so i can see why these people would put forward that argument as its implication
    (although completely flawed, i really like how you argued this and so many other causes you are very smart and well spoken)

    When I first heard their argument (and I use that term loosely) I thought your video would be based on how racism was widely practised long before anyone thought of evolution, showing that, at the very least, racism can spread without any help from Darwin. I love how you demolished them without even having to mention that.

    This is like asking if falling or spinning in a circle is racist. Is counting racist because there was a first people to discover how to do it? Evolution is an emergent property of the universe like entropy. Evolution is the stepwise change from generation to generation of a thing. It is not a property distinct to life.

    I used to have one of those mini Marshall half stacks. It had an adorable belt clip in the back and it was awesome.

    I kept hearing you saying "Arses in Genesis" rather than "Answers in Genesis". Not that you have any problems speaking understandably; just my unconscious mind giving me things to chuckle at.

    "can't discredit a fact just because you don't like it"
    That made me wonder. What's your stance on women? Is there a meaningful physical difference between the sexes that warrants differential treatment?
    (Disclaimer: I'm a female and got denied a combat role based on that fact in the 2000s. I always wondered whether that was justified or bogus. Does femaleness alone make a person worthless, or was that decision purely based on prejudice?)

      there are quite a bit physiological and physical differences between men and women to justify different treatment, but any legal differences in treatment isn't justified

    The question is meaningless. A force of nature cannot be racist. Is Bownian motion racist? Is the photoelectrix effect racist? Is cancer racist? Is genereal relativity racist? Is quantum mechanics racist? Is mitosis racist?

    A big misunderstanding is the use of terms like superior or inferior. There may be a serious scientific discussion over differences across human groups, but whether or not that means being inferior is a value judgement. WE know that there are no fundamental differences between humans but that does not preclude the possibility of differences in averages in IQ, athletic ability, resistance to disease, etc, but in all cases there is more within than between variation across groups and has no direct implications on political rights. Most racists today have become sophisticated enough not to talk about suprior or inferior races, rather they present simplistic and negative stereotypes about the people they pretend to marginalize..

    Before they used evolution to justify racism, there was the Hamitic Hypothesis-the idea that all civilization in Africa came from descendants of Ham, the cursed son of Noah, and not from African populations. (They got really confused at some point, and somehow being cursed wasn't bad anymore-it was being black that was bad)
