    DF kills processors because it doesn't know how to multi-thread and 'stuff' just builds up. Objects, filth, injuries. Cats. Sseth also is not adding weird details, game just works this way.

    • @KibitoAkuya
      @KibitoAkuya 2 ปีที่แล้ว +53

      I think it just can't multithread because too many things depend on the status of many other things that themselves depend on others and so on.
      Even in other games, pathfinding as one example is always a single-thread work because it has to check for collisions not just with environment but with other entities paths

    Yeah Dwarf Fortress is heavy when you get into technical term.
    The 7 dwarfs are basically just pathfinders, they are just there to set up the basic foundation of a Fortress

  • @KibitoAkuya
    @KibitoAkuya 2 ปีที่แล้ว +192

    One thing omitted is that your 7 dwarves are only a starter group to set up a fortress, and once properly established you get a regular influx of migrants wanting to join your colony (Your starter group is always tied to some main dwarven country and that's where the migrants usually come from), mostly dwarves but iirc at times other races can join your fortress too (you can even tame monsters and make them help around, depending on their personality)

    The elephant footage is most likely a reference to Boatmurdered, _the_ Dwarf Fortress let's play. It was played during an earlier build, when those pachyderms were far more hostile and regularly laid siege to the titular fortress, providing one of its core running motifs. Attempting to get rid of them would prove to be the local dwarves' undoing.

    thats no bug that kills all computer hardware in existence, its just because its a game with lots of complex mechanics and if you dont set limits in game to how much of every contributing factor you want then the game will happily attempt to simulate 5 million animals while your cpu goes up in flames. granted some other issues like bad usage of multi threadding and optimisation on how to handle the tasks probably contributes together with other factors but the main reason why even with a perfect code it would still happen is that the game has no limits if you dont set any and will run crazy if you let it happen. same reason why every other game has a population cap that dictates how many living creatures can be on the map at the same time to avoid grilling your pc.

    10:15 It’s more that it’s an indepth, intensive simulation that is also single threaded so it’s demanding due to computational demand. i.e. in the way that mining crypto is demanding, rather than due to “bugs”.
    20:07 Yes the combat system exists to that detail. It selects body parts, tissue layers, and anatomical components (e.g. nerves, muscle, organs) to damage and injury. The hospital system does this except in reverse. There is no health bar except for undead and certain magical creatures otherwise they’d be unkillable.

      @danieljames1868 ปีที่แล้ว

      ... hm. I wonder if whatever magic system is being planned for the Myth and Magic update will include a rework to how undead work to remove the HP bar, maybe make it so that the less parts they have the more upkeep their operation needs, until eventually they're damaged enough that they don't produce/possess enough energy to actually _move..._

    A goblin knocked over a workshop and now my dwarves are killing each other
    Ambusher elves are being spotted, but the giant monsters they're riding on aren't.

    It's not bacteria that makes alcohol. Yeast is a fungus.
    You possibly can make mushrooms in to wine, so long as you have some way to break the mushroom down into sugars. For plants, amylase enzyme is present in sprouted seeds and breaks the complex starches into simple sugars the yeast can consume. If you have a particularly starchy mushroom and a source of amylase, it would be doable.

    7:14 I think combat has given this man brain damage.. The point of sci fi books is to sell books. The point of sci fi awards is to act as a signal that this is a book worth read and thus buying. If awards are given to books that most people that read scifi are unlikely to enjoy the award stops being a sign of quality. It was a dumb idea to give bad books that won't sell awards.

    16:00 The population is around 50-100. 50 if you control who is mating with you and you explect at lest 4 to 7 kids to come out of a pairing. You would basically have to tell people who they are matched with and control so many rights to work. 100 would be better but not perfect. The main goal would be for people to have as many kids as possible to let the kids get enough population so by 4th gen they are at a low risk of naturally keeping it in the family. the 2nd gen would be the main problem of in breeding tbh.

    • @boomknight1015
      @boomknight1015 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you start with 7 people. 3/4 male to female split would be best. Then each female would have to have at lest 8 or more living kids. Other wise there wont be enough population to spread out the gens. Also in breeding will happen. How ever 3rd cousins are better then first cousins. Even in the USA 2nd is legal how ever you would be aiming for 3 and you would get kicked from the group if you refused to have kids. Where at 50ish you could easily stay to help do tasks even if you refuse to have kids at all. With it not being as important if males refused.

A teacher at University tells his students that they have to choose 10 people to bring into a nuclear bunker to "reboot" humanity. They get all bogged down in various reasonings and personal drama, and I'm just sitting there thinking that 10 people is nowhere near enough people to rebuild civilization, so why even bother?

  • @DanaOtken
    @DanaOtken ปีที่แล้ว

    Yup. It isn't overworking your PC because of errors. (Not that there aren't errors from time to time.) It's because the game tries to simulate so much of its universe that things can get out of control - and cats happen to be a lifeform that due to life cycle, being able to easily survive in a dwarf home, and breeding rate, can easily get out of control.
    This is actually something that's become counterintuitive, due to decades of people working out ways to cheat realistic-looking graphics and physics and embedding their results into computer infrastructure. We simultaneously overestimate how powerful the computer systems are and underestimate how complex what we're trying to do is. Just by taking a decent stab at trying to keep track of things like fluid mechanics and tissue layers, Dwarf Fortress starts doing far more work to update its universe than most games would attempt.

    btwe about the rabbit thing you talk about, the thing is you can indeed make a fuck ton of them with just two of them and be stabel. because they breed so many of them in just a few years that the DNA won't overlap that much at all.

    My friend is an ultralight backpacker, and we all like to make jokes about him cutting a three inch toothbrush In half or something. But, to be fair, he carried 25 pounds last time we hiked, and I carried fifty with water. He had a way better time of it. But on a camping trip where the hike is only a few miles, I have a far better life in camp

    The wrestling system is a placeholder. It describes the sort of actions the Dwarves would do automatically and lets you do them in the same detail. Note that this game is still and will probably forever be an alpha version.
    At some point they'll make some sort of fighting system based on wrestling moves instead, but internally the PC will still connect body part A to enemy body part B.

  • @Self-replicating_whatnot

    None of what Seth told here is a dramatic flourish. The game is just that detailed. It simulates *everything*. That's why it'll melt any processor you can possibly buy and install in your home pc.
