Yes, I'm happily moving back there but it has problems. Getting a bank account was a nightmare, although I could settle all bills in cash and could easily cash cheques for high value banknotes without a local bank account.
The quality of practice in the main hospital is often very poor but the scope of care in the private sector is limited. The is a culture within the health service of apathy and willful neglect that I haven't seen in northern European hospitals despite the difficulties they face in meeting demands.
It is a lovely country to live in with plenty to see and do within a short distance. It's also well connected compared to other micro states.

My wife is from Malta and I love it although it certainly is not everybody's cup of tea. The island is small, and crowded and quite old fashioned in some ways although that is changing (personally I would prefer it stay as it is rather than become an imitation of every other Western country).

No offense to your wife, there are exceptions and I met a few, but … Anyone with an European/Western mindset will find Malta unbearable…. First of all it’s grey listed and it’s financial system and banking services are absolutely terrible and frustrating.
1.complete lack of law enforcement (or random enforcement), where law applies depending on who you are in Malta being the developers the top tier
      2. absolute lack of work ethics (95% are not reliable nor trustworthy, everyone is late and no one keeps promises).
      3. no excellence mentality … if something barely works it’s good enough,
      4. Piles of smelly garbage bags in the street where they quickly rotten helped by the sun and humidity making narrow dirty sidewalks unwalkable
      5. 80%of locals are cheeky, rude, extremely loud and won’t hesitate to screw you up as soon as you turn back
      6. Corruption at all levels from the plumbers to the highest businesses man or politicians who don’t hesitate to murder a journalist (yes in Europe’s XXI century…)
      7. Strictest COVID restrictions in all Europe
      8. No rivers no lakes no mountains nor paths to hike and get lost, nowhere to find peace.
      9. Nasty aggressive and totally rude driving habits by nearly ALL locals.
      10. Point 9 together with third world country roads full of bumps and potholes - Forget It about using a bicycle
      11. Massive traffic jams every 300 meters - forget about enjoying a car
      12. The worst public transport system I’ve ever experienced - frustrating
And I can go on and on
Malta is a place to spend the minimum time possible at an expat shelter such as Tigne Point, just to benefit from the non-dom tax regime and run away the rest of the year. I think an expats end up here when alternatives have not been properly considered and proof of this is 90% expats don’t last longer than 3 years.

I moved to Malta a few years ago and I can say that it was a paradise, rent cost next to nothing and the cost of food and drinks was very affordable.
But that is not the Malta of today, the property market had a hyper inflation.
I personally know someone that bought their apartment for 70.000 euros about 6 years ago, the same property is now worth about 200.000 euros.
The average rental cost in Malta has become about the same as the average wage, so if you would want to rent in Malta you’ll be forced to have roommates.
For some reason food has also become a lot more expensive, a meal in a restaurant that used to cost 8 euros about 2 years ago, would now cost you over 13 euros.
Malta also ignores many food safety regulations, so if you move here food poisoning can become a common occurrence.
Because Malta is greylisted, the banks here are very intrusive and will interrogate you randomly for doing transactions they deem “suspicious “. I know someone that had their bank account terminated because they bought a second hand car, and the bank found it too “high risk” to deal with it.
A Maltese citizenship is also not that easy to get, I’m European and married to someone from Malta, but I will still have to wait 5 year’s until I can apply for citizenship.
Another issue with Malta is that it’s overcrowded, in rush hour all the busses are full and they won’t let you on.
The traffic and queues here can also be very frustrating.
For now I wouldn’t move to Malta as a foreigner, there’s many countries where the quality of life is just better.

    • @andramora
      @andramora 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

With the Malta program you have EU citizenship in 18 months. With the Portuguese program, it's at least 5 years. You'd be a resident in the intervening time. So you could travel the EU easily but you couldn't, for example, rent an apartment or put your kids in school in Paris, since you're a Malta/Portuguese Resident and not a French Resident.
I chose the Portuguese Golden Visa, as I felt that was fine for me, but with the processing time it took to get my visa and then what it will take again for citizenship at the end, I've realized it's actually more of a 7-8 year process from start to finish. So, even for me who doesn't have kids yet, if I had a kid next year and wanted them to go to French schools from the beginning, that'd be tough.

    Malta tourist website:
    1. Tourist who are unvaccinated will undergo a mandatory quarantine at their own expense.
    2. You will need to wear a mask outdoors unless you have received a booster shot.
    3. Vaccination cards must be shown upon entree to the list below - virtually all businesses.
    4. Vaccine cards must be presented by women that are up to 16 weeks pregnant.
    Are you kidding?
People need to do some research and quit basing their aspirations to leave the US on Twitter comments. If you move to a foreign country outside the US, you will be at the mercy of their governing standards. Not to mention in a poor position should the global supply chain falter.
Considering the situation of the US Dollar, Crude Oil, supply chains, and tensions between the Federation of Russia and China. I would deem it unwise to remove yourself from the US.
