I mean, Barney is objectively worse than Ted, the only difference is that Ted is expected to do good things and often does bad things and Barney is expected to do bad things and often does good things.
But to say Barney is a sheep and Ted is a wolf is a bit of an exaggeration.

    • @metube6506

      In my theory.
Barney: Knows that he himself is a wolf and he never tried to hide that fact in front of his friends.
Ted: Thinks he is a sheep, but actually a wolf.
Barney knows deep down Ted is a wolf like him, That is why he wanted Ted as his wingman in the first place.

Makes sense, i just started watching the show all over again a few weeks ago and I’m surprised how terrible of a person Ted actually is. In all honesty he could be making everyone seem worse than what they were to make himself seem like a saint. Lily kinda proved that when she told the REAL story about what happened when Ted saw the Captain at the art exhibit.

@@mary5203 OK.. So what do u trust in the show then if you don't trust the narrator? May be Lily was criminal, an art thief, that's why he keeps telling about Aldrin justice where she keeps stealing expensive stuff.. Barney's mom was actually a stripper and he used to live in a strip club rather than visiting it and became a prostitute thats why he was ashamed to tell about his job and was able to sleep with 250+ women and Robin eventually found out and they got divorced? May be Marshall was a violent guy and a bully who made sure that Ted made him a nice guy in his stories and that's why Ted warned his kids to never get into a fight with him.. One of the episodes that made me realize how delusional Ted really is is in the episode Trilogy Time where Ted imagines where he will be in 3 years. In one of the scenarios Robin is pregnant with his baby and she says that "I've never been into the whole marriage and kids thing but Ted made me change my mind." It really highlights how Ted loves the idea of Robin as opposed to really loving everything about her.

How many times do we have to hear Ted saying a girl is 'perfect', 'special' 'the one' 'made for him how many girls does he say I love you too with no thought of what it means or if he really feels it. Some people like to feel needed. Marshall and Lilly were a super dependent couple (sometimes to a fault, like the road trip to Chicago with Lilly), but they still had a very healthy relationship. I do agree that Barney really was able to recognize and appreciate her independence. But I don't think this made Ted less of a character, it's just another difference between Ted and Robin. I personally have no preference about who Robin should have ended up with, but by the very end of the show I can easily see why Ted and Robin would get together, they both got what they wanted out of life (Ted:wife and kids)(Robin: successful career) and they're single. It is unfortunate that Barney and Robin get divorced and that Tracy dies, and it all definitely could have all been paced better in the last episode, but that's life sometimes, things like that happen and himym was never scared to tackle the heavier aspects of life.

I thought that's where they were going with his arcs in season 4 where he was kind of an ass but the gang called him out, and he said something about how he's glad he didn't meet the mother then, because she wouldn't have liked him. It would have been a much better story if the mother wasn't the perfect ideal who checked off every box on his list, but instead had the same values and goals and a compatible personality. Someone quirky and fun but also practical, who doesn't put up with his shit, and hey maybe she's a cat person and she thinks scotch is gross, but he learns to be okay with that, because the reality is better than the ridiculous thing he imagined. And of course, if he actually stayed with this real person and didn't just chase after Robin again. They could have done all that in just the last season or two but they fucked the whole thing up and nothing had consequences.

To be honest, I feel like Ted gets villainized too much while the person who I adored throughout the most part of the show and who tremendously disappointed me seems to be just as (actually, in my eyes, much more) villain-like.
    Robin.
    Here's why:
    - She called Ted at 2 am, asking to come to her place under some strange pretence when in reality she had a hard day that made her realize she may have wanted a relationship. Yep, it's Ted who's responsible for his relationship with Victoria. But Robin acted so innocently when she learned they didn't break up. Girl, what did you think you were doing asking a guy, who you repeatedly rejected, to come to you at night because you're in a special mood when he already has a girlfriend?
    - She asked Ted literally on his wedding day to not marry because one day she may change her mind and want a family. Ted had every right to be pissed off. She literally asked him to cancel his wedding, which was already happening, and be her plan B.
    - She catched feelings for Barney once again when he had fallen for Nora. But when they actually decided to reunite after cheating on their partners, she backed off. It was so unfair to both Barney and Kevin, to whom she never even said the truth.
    - No surprise, Robin once again falls for Barney when she sees how he dates Patricia. Even though she rejected him right before that! And, no surprise, she decides to tell him about her feelings when he's proposing! Yep, it all was Barney's plan (he knew her too well) but she didn't know that at the time and she would pull off the same shit if Barney was really in love with someone else.
    - Then she decides to crush her own wedding and ask Ted to run away with her. She didn't even care that she asks him to leave his best friend heartbroken on his wedding day, basically cut off the friendship, because she feels like Ted is ready to do anything for her at any time and she wants that. Not to mention that she wanted to break Barney's heart in front of all his friends and relatives when he did nothing wrong.
    - When Ted finally moved on with Tracy, she has the audacity to tell Lily that he should have ended up with her. Girl, you rejected him multiple times, now he's happily married, what are you talking about. Luckily, she didn't act on that but in the deleted scene when she meets Ted and his daughter and they have lunch, she tells him that she misses him and he's more than a friend to her. And he says he's happy right now. Basically, she wanted to reunite, testing the grounds for how much he wants it when he's married😭
And just one more thing that kinda pissed me off. When she sleeps with Barney, Ted is mad only at Barney. When Barney sees that she and Ted are holding hands in the park, he's mad only at Ted! Even though it was her, who took his hand. Well, Barney probably didn't see it but still.
Robin is never called out for the shit she did to Ted, Barney, and Kevin and that sucks.

Also worth noting the difference in actor qualities here. Ted was written to be a hopeless, desperate romantic and Josh Radnor accomplished the feat like a typical worker does his job without asking too many questions (maybe he should have asked more, as this video shows). Marshall is written to be the nice married gentleman, and again Jason Segel performs his feat in a rather straightforward manner.
Barney was always written to be a cartoonish level misogynist villain (the 'devil' on Ted's shoulder to pair with Marshall's 'angel,' so to speak). Yet by the end of the show Neil Patrick Harris had delivered a character that we routinely condemned, but at the same time sympathized with and gradually even started cheering for in certain situations. A complex, deep character with an entertaining backstory whom gradually developed through time. That is what I call good quality acting.
Also people need to learn the difference between a 'good guy' and 'cordial guy.' There are a lot of the latter out there, not many of the former. Ted's character is definitely not a 'good guy' in any sense of the word, although his cordial actions can be interpreted as such on occasion.

    • @comealsolito804

@@thebabylonian109 I agree that Neil is the best actor, but not because of what you just said and I absolutely disagree with Ted and Marshall "just doing a good job". Every actor was the best choice in every way possible, it's just that Barney had the most complex character development of the gang. Then, of course Neil is ridiculously great but what you said just shows that the writers had different intention with his character.
The last statement, I agree there's definitely a difference between the two terms, but Ted is definitely a "good guy" that cares for others. It's actually the opposite of what you said, Ted is a good guy who on occasion becomes "the nice guy". Big difference.

Ted is the unreliable narrator of the show and exaggerates Barney’s sleaziness and I suspect Marshall’s wholesomeness as well. It’s easier to tell a story and label people as archetypes instead of looking at the gray areas.
Also, I suspect Ted really calls out Barney’s flaws because he has them and hates that about himself. So his perspective of Barney is so misogynistic and promiscuous to make Ted feel better. As a narcissist, he still can’t see his flaws. In his stories to his kids, he doesn’t realize how he’s painting himself.
I just realized how much more heartbreaking it was when Robin rejected Barney (slow motion shaking head no after the work cruise) vs rejecting Ted (flatly saying no to loving him). It’s because Robin and Barney had decided TOGETHER that they would be together, while Ted imposes this decision on her. And when he said he could love her without being able to have children? Yeah right!

In Zoo or False, Barney is unsatisfied with how the story ends and says he’ll tell the story better with a more exciting ending. Then suddenly the monkey does a King Kong re-enactment and Bob Saget voice says “it really happened.”
There’s the time he can’t remember why Lily and Barney are fighting so they just say “I’m still mad at you for that one thing”, which shows his control over the show.

HIMYM would have been a far better series if its later seasons shown Ted maturing and having learn from his past mistakes. In particular, the last season should have been about the first year of his relation with Tracy, showing her as not being the perfect woman Ted idealizes, but as an imperfec person who he loves for real. Even the original finale where Tracy as since passed away and Ted is gonna attempt an new relation with Robin would sound a lot bettr that way, as we know Ted as changed for the better.

    • @StealthGamer37
      @StealthGamer37 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

HIMYM was a really good story. It may have seemed crazy for a while, especially with not seeing the mother that much, but we got an answer in season 8. It’s not the story of HIMYM, it’s How I Became The Man I Am Today, Before I Met Your Mom. But HIBtMIATBIMYM is not a good title.
As far as the ending: Tracy should’ve been as you said, an imperfect woman who he truly loved and wanted the best for, and Barney and Robin should’ve stayed together, adopting a kid (I’ll get to why in a moment).
As far as Tracy dying, the writing was on the wall for a while (I didn’t see it, but, looking back, it was there), so I don’t know whether I’d change that or not. A dad recounting the story of how he met their dead mother to his kids is a heart-wrenchingly beautiful story, so I’m good with the unhappy ending. We definitely should’ve gotten more episodes with them together, maybe a season 10 with their relationship building.
As far as Barney and Robin, I see their characters this way:
      - Barney had one fear hammered into him through his dad’s and Shannon’s abandonment. His fear of abandonment and inability to commit created the “awesome” Barney as he refers himself. The perfect arc was there for him. He accepted his father’s mistakes after getting to know him and had him teach him the most important lesson of his life: that the playboy lifestyle won’t last, and that he will find the perfect woman for him. Barney knew in his heart it was Robin.
      - So, the logical conclusion to Barney’s story: a boy from a broken home, with a lying mother and deadbeat dad, was to create an unbroken home for himself. You could even take the symbolism of rescuing a kid from a broken home with the adoption angle.
      - Next is Robin. Her arc was simple, learning to love herself. Her fear of abandonment (proven through her therapy) and her intense insecurity stem from her monster of a dad. She learned to love herself and finally find room for a loving relationship, even putting her relationships first occasionally. She should’ve stayed with Barney in the end, showing the scared, insecure little girl that happiness and everything she want’s out of life are possible.
      - As far as kids for Robin. People may say (and she may say) that she didn’t want kids, but I think the episode where she learns she can’t have kids is really telling. She wants kids, but she always forced herself not to want them. Ted even said that she changed her mind about kids as she became Aunt Robin, being a pseudo mother figure to the kids who lost their mother. Her adopting kids with Barney would’ve made all the sense in the world, teaching her that she could be a better parent than her terrible dad and distant mom. I understand that some people don’t want kids, and that’s fine, but Robin definitely seemed like she wanted them.

Yes, he eventually took her back, but she also had a horrible, soul crushing time trying to pursue her art and Marshall even attempted to move on with another woman before they got back together. Plus, his trust issues with her lasted for years AFTER they got married. Now that I think about it, Marshall was also forced to take a job he hated because Lily had put them so deeply in debt as well...
Every bad thing that happened to Barney as an adult relates back to losing his girlfriend and deciding to spend his life pursuing revenge and essentially becoming the man who hurt him, which could mean losing his first fiancé and eventually losing Robin could be a result of his obsession.
Marshall...was actually the best of the main characters. The worst thing I remember him doing was accepting the judge position without asking Lily, but it did lead to a big fight and Marshall being terrified when Lily left the hotel (even though it was less to leave him and more so she could get that pregnancy test)
Robin. 🤔 Well, she didn’t do that much that could invite karmic retribution. She did give up her dogs for a man who she failed at having a relationship with multiple times, leaving herself more lonely and prone to going back to him (especially because she allowed his friends to become her entire social circle as time progressed). She lost the love of her life after being unable to prioritize her new marriage. That’s...about it?

I would agree about Barney but what happened with his first girlfiend is his backstory so it doesn't really count. Even so, he still sold a girl for a car and tricked over 200 women to sleep with him. Yet when he want to settle down we have to look at him in a sympathetic way. He didn't lose Robin because of his obsession but because he didn't have a purpose. Hence why having a daughter to take care of was the best thing that could happen to him.
Marshall still got the job albeit later. Most of the bad stuff that happend to him were due to Lily anyway.
Robin could have taken her dogs back after her breakup so this is a non argument. The fact that Ted friends were her friends too is her own choice. And she did get back with Ted at the end of the story.
Ted got his ass kicked by a girl he ditched on his birthday (for the second time). He lost Victoria because he cheated and because he choosed Robin. He got ditched the day of his weeding and had a movie about him that portrayed him the negative way by the couple he brought back together himself. Got his appartement blown up. And was basically depressed by the end of the serie.
He messed up several times and ultimately things turned out good for him but it wasn't that much better than the cast.

      @Lauren.E.O 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

Louis-Stéphane LOBE LOBAS About Lily: She tried to sabotage his date, but then gave up and seemingly accepted that she couldn’t force them to get back together. Marshall took her back and they eventually got married. While I absolutely blame Lily for the pain the entire group felt when she ditched them, it is Marshall’s fault when he brought it up YEARS later for the sake of winning a point in an argument. If he couldn’t forgive and trust her, he shouldn’t have married her, and if he DID forgive her, he shouldn’t have said it.
Barney...with Ted as the narrator, I wonder how accurate some of those details are. Like, do we really believe the same man who’d nearly die trying to get to Ted’s hospital bedside and would travel to California to beg Lily to come home would be involved in human trafficking?
Robin. I’m not saying Ted planned to cut her off from the rest of the world and make her reliant on at least being around him, but that IS kind of what happened. Lily and Robin weren’t friends from the start. Ted kept making excuses to get Robin to socialize with him and bonds eventually formed. Later on, it made it really tough for Robin to date anyone else, because Ted had constant access to her partners and kept insisting they were destined for each other, which the others did not do enough to cut back on. The dog thing was just an example of how her life outside him shrank over the years. It was her call, but he brought it up in the first place, and it was one of the prime examples of how he tried to change her life to better suit his image of their future marriage.

I recently started rewatching HIMYM and Ted now just strikes me as a typical Nice Guy. He builds up these ideals about women and if one doesn't quite fit into it exactly, he always blames her and doesn't really take the time to explore the idea that he might be wrong. He also has serious problems with respecting boundaries and taking no for an answer. It's actually funny that he is the narrator too because he's also supposed to be the main character of the show so he's essentially a narcissist justifying his own actions and pushing his own agenda and rarely considering how he affects others around him. It also means we can never truly trust anything that happens in the show, even the way the other characters are, especially Barney, since he could very well just be exaggerating or embellishing to make himself look better.

    • @LadyDoomsinger
      @LadyDoomsinger ปีที่แล้ว +2

The only thing we can "trust" is the ending, which was not told by Ted himself, where his kids urge him to go out with Robin and he shows up with the blue horn on her doorstep (again).
And this is why that ending ruined the show; because up to that point, we could've assumed Ted was telling an unreliable story, with bad facts and exaggerations - but his ending up with Robin in the finale kind of validates everything he's said and done through the entire show - as the "happy" ending he deserved because he was "the protagonist".

Marshall is not an unreasonable guy. He isn't possessive or controlling and he loved Lily. He would have understood and let her go explore who she is. She is not wrong for wanting this experience but she is wrong in the way she went about it. She went behing his back to get the internship than broke his heart and when she came back tried to pretend like nothing happened. One of the most telling episodes was when Ted went after Robins co-worker, who acted like a child, and when Robin was rightfully baffled by the hold this girl had on men- Ted blamed and insulted Robin by telling her that she never made him feel wanted because she was too independent. For all of his faults, Barney’s response was that he loved the independent side of Robin. Ted is a baby that’s scared of strong women.

Some people like to feel needed. Marshall and Lilly were a super dependent couple (sometimes to a fault, like the road trip to Chicago with Lilly), but they still had a very healthy relationship. I think Ted is a love addict, addicted to the high of pursuing romantic interests and the initial excitement of new love, but once he gets the object of his desire it's not long before he doesn't want him anymore. The only reason he maintains his feelings for Robin are sustained over years is because she remains elusive (and takes intermittent breaks from his obsession over her to be obsessed with someone else). His fixations on women have nothing to do with the real person, he's just transposing his obsessive ideation about One True Love onto them successively. No one is a real person with their own needs to him and what he feels isn't "love". His behavior qualifies as a disorder because it negatively impacts his life on a regular basis, causing him to jeopardize his career and friendships and even puts him at risk for jail time because some of the things he does in the name of "love" are illegal. I don't think Ted ever actually could get married and sustain a committed relationship without therapy because he loses interest in relationships as soon as the person doesn't live up to his image of them or the heightened excitement of new love settles down. I could see him getting married and divorced multiple times in his life and always thinks it's because he just can't find "the one" and not because he has poor relationship skills.

I even like Ross better than Ted, in Friends at least the characters are aware that Ross's behavior is not healthy and we also get a clear explanation (not excuse) for it, he used to be carefree and trustful until Calor cheated on him(yes, she cheated on him! People always seem to forget that) and his father imposed a very toxic masculinity on him even though Ross was cuddled by him and his mother(specially his mother), which also spoiled him. I still condemned the writers for not closing his redemption arc(if he ever had any, to me it starts when he accepts Rachel and Joey as a a couple) by letting Rachel pursue her dream job in Paris. Ted just plain sucks! 🤣

About time tbh, so many young men in real life have that similar whiny "I'm a nice person and I know I would be the perfect bf, silly women just don't know what's best for them and go after the wrong men" mindset. They don't feel whole and they think a partner will make them whole, spoiler alert: they will not. If you aren't a whole person before you get into a relationship the relationship won't change that, it will only magnify it. There are some cases in which you work through your issues with your partner's help and get to salvage the relationship, but that would imply you have the self-awareness to see the problem and you are willing to put in the effort to change it. Sadly that happens rarely.

Outside of rachel he actually is a pretty measured person. He walks his ex down the isle at her wedding. How many people would ever do that, especially if she cheated on you? He also trys to be cool with joey and rachel, even though it makes him breakdown. Id say ross is just the classic shy nerd not a "nice guy". He isnt perfect but he's nowhere near as bad as ted

I just realized the PERFECT ending for HIMYM. Everyone is upset the mom died and that was the twist. I still think there should have been a twist.
At the very end, the kids should have said. "I don't understand dad, if you loved mom so much, why did you two get divorced."
Then Ted should have looked at them and said. "Weren't you listening to the story? I was a complete mess back then. I had no idea what love was or how to truly be in love. Sure when I met your mom, I thought she was the one, just like all the others but just like all the others, I let a few minor inconsequential flaws get in the way of what should have been a great marriage. I was a fool. That's why I told you this story."

      Fair points:
      - Yes, widows are allowed to move on, and Ted did wait the appropriate time for moving on.
      - Yes, Ted was considerate to even ask his kids.
(Even through this would impact his kids, since they were already teenagers by then, and no longer required as close of parental care, including motherly care, the decision of whoever Ted was with would therefore not be too impactful for them).
However, one could argue that they way he told the story of meeting their mother was still somewhat manipulative.
Considering how Tracy was their real mother and he didn't even hardly mention anything about her until towards the final years, and she does not even show up regularly until the final year, and how she does not even play an active role until close to the end where she is soon killed off anyway, all while Robin plays a much more dominant and present role throughout the entirety of the story, it does seem like Ted was telling the story in such a way as to get the kids to sympathize his romantic obsession with Robin so he could justify his continued pursuit of her.
In other words, the way he told the story, it almost seems like he considered Robin to be the mother that he met rather than Tracy, their actual mother!

And I think the ending was maybe refering their pact of being together if they were single by 40.
I think even tho the writers have failed to really demonstrate it, their best relationship was with each other and If Ted didn't want children they would've stayed together. I think the show realized this on and off during its run that Ted was the bad guy. The reason he and Tracy were a match wasn't because she was perfect for Ted (she was way too good for him. Although, we can never know because Ted is an unreliable narrator) but because he let go of that idealistic ideas that screw the women he dated over (he says so in the episode about Tracy and his first date that four years ago he'd make a speech that scare her off but now he wouldn't) by the time he met her. There's numerous examples of this: how he said she wouldn't have liked him back in Saint Patrick's Day, how Stella made him less of an idealistic which was why she was an important part of the story. Ted's character development was to become LESS of the main character who gets what he wants just cause. Sure, he could still act like a jerk in later seasons and his idealism was what made him more and more unhappy in the late years, but I still think that was how he was meant to develop.
Which is WHY the ending sucks so bad because it reverses all that relative development and has Ted screw up Robin's life again.

Man, if it is true that comparing the two can be exaggerated, Ted is not at all a "romantic" type or a "romantic fool".
If guys learn to be "romantic" from him, then they better not be romantic ... or whatever you think is romantic. A person who does not respect your limits, your personal space, your desires or your interests then is nothing more than an egocentric, selfish and controlling stalker.

@@laplitkhiddlestoner4ever834 Yes, Ted Mosby is definitely a stalker. Let's do a quick recap of his failings. He asked Robin out multiple times. Granted, she even had feelings for him. She cried when she realized he was taken. Lily herself saw the confusion in Robin. He introduced her to his group of friends and they all became super close. When they finally did start dating, they seemed really good together, with the lone exception that Ted wanted long-term commitment and Robin had no idea what she wanted. Interestingly, she chose a life of long-term commitment with Barney, a person who can't possibly give her that. Ted, by the way, supported her ultimate when she chose Barney. Ted's mistake was ever wasting time on a lady too emotionally confused to know what she wanted and to actually appreciate him. At worst, you can say he was a little pushy. That's far from being an egocentric, selfish stalker (let alone, a serial killer).

You could argue that Ted's a villain because as his stories go on, the overall narrative shifts from being a story about how he met their true mother to how he just wants to date Robin after the mother died, while telling about all the fun times and memories they shared so the kids would be more sympathetic to this motive.
It's not necessarily that he never loved Tracy, but only that he loved Tracy as much as he could possibly love any woman other than Robin. Once he hyper-fixated on Robin as "The One," he never let go of that idea, and pursued Robin relentlessly, tried to use other women to get over Robin, but couldn't, and even after spending a good portion of his life with a really great woman who became the mother of his children, still ran back to Robin not long after she died.

    • @kidlitfanful
      @kidlitfanful 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@NIVEA yes, but that makes it a bad concept, at least once they get past the first season.
When they realized that they were going to have more than a couple of seasons, they filmed all the scenes with he kids ahead of time. This forced them into Ted ending up with Robin, even though the characters developed into people who weren't remotely right for each other.
They proposed "How I Met Your Dad," from Tracy's point of view, which would have been fun except it couldn't be a light romantic comedy once we knew she'd die.

Ted did not reappear back in Stella's life and bad mouth her. He happened to run into Stella and Tony, and Tony thought Ted might want Stella back, which is why Ted explained that he doesn't want Stella back, not after he got left at the altar. That is not badmouthing. Ted did not fight his way back in Stella's life to ruin her life. All I'm saying is that some of the points you made were kinda unfair. Even though you had some good points, I must say that multiple of the few second clips of evidence you had were pretty much taken out of context.

I agree with most of the points they made, but Stellas & Tonys behavior were absolutely bad. Also I don't blame not remembering blah blahs name after 22 years after one date or so. :D But other than that Ted was not really a great guy ... baggage.

I totally disagree. Apart from maybe Marshall all others have done very immoral things throughout the series. There is no villain. The characters are realisitc and therefore have flaws. Furthermore i feel a lot of the "negative traits" of Ted aren't even negative traits. It is completely normal to think someone is the love of your life and soon after a break up realise you were wrong.

There was a "nice guy" at my job that wanted to date me, but I immediately told him I just wanted to be friends. Everything seemed ok until... he bought me gifts, rushed to pay for my lunch and got mad when I declined, got my address and sent flowers to my house on several occasions, and then sent me hate-mail when I told him our "friendship" was not going to work out. It scares me that people like him will think that they're just being sincere, "good" men, when they're really just emotionally volatile, manipulative, and vindictive people.

    Ted's great obstacles were:
-He would move too fast in his relationships.
-His concept of "The One" was too idealistic.
*To overcome his obstacles, he needs:
    -Timing (To pace himself slowly)
-To accept people for who they really are

The firs one IS even mentioned in the show. It's basically the premise as to why It starts so soon. The show tells the story of how he became the person Who met her wife. There's an episode when he literally tells us that if he had met Tracy a few years back he would've scared the shit out of her, because he moved too fast in relationships.

      Timing - is merely subjective
Accepting people for who they are - do you do that, eh? How is that even possible?
