  • 20 licks for Minor Swing, written by Django Reinhardt. Minor Swing is one of the most widely played of all Gypsy Jazz tunes. In this Violin lesson I demonstrate 20 licks that you can use when soloing over the Minor Swing chord sequence. The licks are categorised; arpeggio licks, harmonic minor licks, minor blues licks, chord substitutions, original Grappelli licks and so on. I show how in many cases the licks can be repeated over different chords, either with or without transposition. I also show how they can be modified rhythmically or melodically to make the improvisation more flexible and creative. There are many more Gypsy Jazz tutorials on the Fiddle Channel, both on specific jazz standards, and on specific jazz violin techniques.

So you says, you says you don't want to teach us how to make solos note for note, but give us ideas?
    Mission accomplished, sir.
As a hopeless piano and ukulele student that doesn't hear music in my head, I need help on how to be musical. My piano teacher made a remark this week. He says I'm a real Geek when it comes to music theory but I lack in ear training. Practicing your techniques helps me with that aspect. I know what to do, I just have to recognize the landmarks on my journey. Not as easy as it looks...or sounds.

Still I got a lot to learn from you master. About 10 years ago I bought your book and it opened a huge door of musical information, for that I'm very thankful.

Are you ok with some of your solo playing in this video to be sampled? I was thinking about using parts of it in a composition I am working on, but wanted clearance first.

@@maxlinberg Hi Max. Great job! How did you separate the violin from my backing, or is that in there as well?

    • @maxlinberg

If I remember correctly, I believe the backing track is still in there, it just blends into the background.
