    and again you are a litle late 😊🤣 the patchbox on my swivel breech rifle is finisched now. Your aproach is a litle different from mine and the idea with the bend chisel is perfect . That will be my next tool to make 👍 I am very curious how you manage to make the dovetail and the two parts lid.
    It is everytime a joy to watch your work .... Thank you for sharing your knowledge 😊

    You can grind a scraper to match the router bit to cut the dove tails on the bottom of the lid I hope you do another vid to show how you do the top of the box 👍👏👏

      @grumpygunsmithofwilliamsburg  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I try to use more common tools that most builders might have but it's good you're thinking. A scraper would be great if you do a lot of wood boxes.

    Man, get yourself a forstner bit! It would make cutting the holes in the stock so much smoother.

    • @grumpygunsmithofwilliamsburg
      @grumpygunsmithofwilliamsburg  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      They didn't have them in the 18th or 19th century and I'm "old school". You also wouldn't get the same look as the antique rifles.

    Those pilot holes the bit left would eat me up I wonder if you could reshape the bit to change that and still get good guidance from them

    • @grumpygunsmithofwilliamsburg
      @grumpygunsmithofwilliamsburg  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      90% of the original guns still have the pilot holes on the bottom of the cavity. Call me a traditionalist.

  • @rumeunner3245
    @rumeunner3245 ปีที่แล้ว

    What type of tool is that being used to scrape out the cavity?

  • @lordreginaldfilibuster
    @lordreginaldfilibuster ปีที่แล้ว

    a Paddle bit Really? Man you need to invest a few bucks into a Forstner Bit set. the point isn't as severe so the bottom of the hole is cleaner.

    It is easier with a router it is also easier to screw up I don't mean to sound like a know it all but if you would use a 1 in. Chisel it would be easier to cut straight lines along both sides on the bottom side it would be easier to pare down on the line with a three quarter or a one in. Chisel if you have them either one will make shorter work of it

    • @grumpygunsmithofwilliamsburg
      @grumpygunsmithofwilliamsburg  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most people don't have a wide chisel. I try to show how to do the work with more common tools but a 1" one would work well.

  • @peshewa0529
    @peshewa0529 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    You mentioned a 14 degree router bit. Is a 1/4" by a 1/4" okay to use for the angle ?

    • @grumpygunsmithofwilliamsburg
      @grumpygunsmithofwilliamsburg  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, it would need to be a dovetail bit, not straight.

    • @peshewa0529
      @peshewa0529 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Okay, I meant a dovetail bit. A 1/4" height x 1/4" cut. Is this the correct size bit or what size dovetail do you reccomend ? Thanks for the help.

    • @grumpygunsmithofwilliamsburg
      @grumpygunsmithofwilliamsburg  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@peshewa0529 1/4" depth is a little deep. 3/16" is best and as long as the dovetail in the stock fits the lid, you should be good. If in doubt, try a practice block first.

    • @peshewa0529
