This video has been so helpful, thank you. Just my two cents on dahlias though. Dahlia tubers might be initially expensive but they divide so easily that you easily make your money back on that. Also the first year I grew dahlias , they were being devoured by caterpillars. Once I started using compost regularly and a bit of BT insecticide (all natural, and approved for organic use), I have never seen a single harmful insect on my dahlias again. I don't sell my flowers just yet (that's in the works) but I do grow them, so that has been my experience. I just wanted to add that a diluted yogurt spray works miracles on flowers with powdery mildew.

@@gardendetour499 if you live in a city the city often has compost available for free or very inexpensive. Way cheaper than buying bags. The mulch probably helped by bringing insects that prey on caterpillars. There's supposedly a milk spray that works for powder mildew. If you can find the original research you can get the recipe.
Can you make a composting video?? Would love that! If not can you share what composting bin you use? Your stuff is the best! You deserve way more followers, I hope your channel grows quickly, your so knowledgeable
wonderful, practical advice. much appreciated. i do not want to be a flower farmer. love flowers tho. just moved to different state and got .56 acre pasture. it is all weeds!! in the past i have mostly done perennials. i just don't have the money to buy all that. sad ,( so annuals for now. just invested in growing system. no flourescent available. found led at walmart $20 ea. pretty excited. it is a huge investment. sterile soil, trays, etc. i think i may be overdoing it. removing the pasture weeds is exhausting and hard work. wish me well. you have a BEAUTIFUL smile.

Where are you in PA? We are in Lancaster County! :) I grow flowers to sell at our Small Grocery Store (that we own), to an Amish lady that sells bouquets at a roadside stand, and this year I might try selling at the roadside here too. I have greatly expanded what I am growing this year...I plan on still growing my usual 110+ Dahlia varieties, Lisianthus, Sunflowers, Zinnias, etc. Right now I have 600+ Tulips that should be blooming shortly! We'll see if I can sell some at our store, since we are under the Stay At Home order with the current Coronvirus situation. Everyone stay safe and healthy!!! Many happy blooms to you! :)

We sell a lot of Organic Produce, Hormone/Antibiotic Free Meats, Bulk Foods, etc. We are a Secondary Market Store (like Glenwood, BB's, Grocery Outlet). We love getting good, healthy food from our Store! Have a lovely weekend!

I like that you say "know your customer", this is challenging for us at the moment because we just don't quite know the route we want to take. Hi Nicole! I use the Penn State Extension for my farm and the vegetable garden I manage. I have also heard good things about Umass Soil and Plant Tissue Testing Lab.
I’m considering flower farming as a revenue source on my land. I have 2 acres. The owner before me had to do a lot of backfilling with clay rocky construction dirt. That being said - do you think it’s possible or feasible to do all raised bed growing? I’m in zone 6b NW AR. Also, any flower that you would recommend growing that you can’t lose either way? For example I’m thinking about focusing on different sunflower varieties/colors. Thank u! ☺️🌻
I think sunflowers planted in consistent success is definitely a good focus. I know a grower in VA who plants 1500 suns a week. Raised beds will definitely work. Are you talking about just raising the soil level or making boxes? The boxes will cut into your profit substantially.

Does it matter if you are using LED shop lights for the distance above the seedlings?
Yes. If using LEDs or T5s the lights should be kept much higher than T8 and T12 flourescent bulbs.
