I’ve always been a gardener, but thanks to you, I now look at my shrubs, perennials and annuals in terms of arranging. It’s definitely changed how I see my plants, and deepened my appreciation for them. Thank you for adding a new and wonderful dimension to my gardening experience. 🙏🏻🌻

I have not found many people who are is into gardening and flowers as I am but I think you are!! My yard has lots of shade. your video was very interesting. I do have pretty much all the flowers you suggested. Clematis is another one that I think grows well in partial shade and it’s really beautiful.I really enjoy your videos. Thank you for making them! I know it must be a lot of work! I always think I should make some videos but then I think of all the work it will take and I don’t do it.

Thank you. Was the last plant the only one resistant to deer? We are zone 7, high desert, central California in mountains, and the deer have a natural yearly trek through our backyard, if they don't get run down crossing Rt. 101 before they come up another 100 ft. or so to our house. All the plants were beautiful...sure hope we can use some of them. We've lived here 45 years , and the oaks on our back hill have grown so enormous they have covered and shadowed and shaded the 80 ft. bank of flowers that thrived in the sun 😎

Speaking of bleeding heart... I have one that takes up a LARGE space, which I love. But there’s a HUGE void of green when I dies back. What can I do about that big empty spot, other than dividing it?

    • @NorthlawnFlowerFarm
      @NorthlawnFlowerFarm  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi Becky! Perhaps, try planting a very large hostas close to your bleeding heart. The larger cultivars (at least the ones I have) are slower to emerge and open up. By the time it's fully open the blooms on the bleeding heart should be wrapping up. Another idea would be to come in with a shade container in that area once the bleeding heart starts to die back. You could place the planter where you want late in the season, and then move it around as you see fit.

    • @gardengatesopen
      @gardengatesopen 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I think a lot of places don't grow them bcuz of their acidic soil requirements.
My soil is alkaline, and while I COULD grow azaleas, and rhodies, etc. in a pot, I would still be fighting the ph of that potted soil bcuz my water is also alkaline.
For instance, azaleas are gorgeous in places where they are happiest, and visibly miserable in places where they are not...
We gardeners are always in love with blooming rhododendrons & azaleas!!
No matter if we can grow
      them, or not! 💘💕💞💕💞💕

I actually have no idea, I've never heard of any that might be able to grow here...
But then I've never looked too!!
I just thought they all were a lost cause to me!! 💔
      Once, just ONE TIME,
      I grew a Gardenia.
      I kept it alive too!
But I could see it just wasn't happy... 🥺
I remember apologizing to it quite often!! hahaha!
It finally left me of its own accord one semi-cold night.
But I'll look the one up that you mentioned and see how it matches up to my conditions. Thanks for the idea! ❤

Ok - I rushed right over to look it up!! And it sounds like a very nice species of plants!!
      Deutzia plant:
▪︎They belong to the hydrangea family, and one of my sources said there's about 60 different varieties.
▪︎They can grow & flower in part shade, also likes full sun
▪︎ There are different sizes, so they range from about 3 feet tall, to 8 feet tall.
▪︎ They are mound forming shrubs w a weeping type form.
▪︎ They don't suffer from disease problems.
      ▪︎ Hardy in zones 5-8
▪︎ They need pruning every year, right after flowering.
▪︎ They flower on 2nd year wood (that's a new one to me!)
▪︎They can grow in a wide range of soils, including alkaline soils.
▪︎ They bloom for approx. 2 weeks out of the year
      ▪︎ Good cut flower
▪︎ Best of all they are fragrant!!
▪︎ The roots need to stay somewhat moist.
▪︎ The only 2 things that will do them in are
      TOO MUCH moisture,
      and
      NOT ENOUGH moisture!
I suppose that means they are what I call - "A Goldilocks" plant. Bcuz it has some feature which needs to be
      "Just Right"...
While this plant was a good try for my garden, I happen to have a very dry garden.
      (unfortunately)
I just cannot count on the rain to help w any garden plants.
This also means that I would never be able to keep its roots at "just the right" level of moisture.
However, anyone who has a nice amount of moisture falling from the sky would probably LOVE this plant in the background of their border! And during those 2 weeks of blooming, they are probably providing a glorious scent that wafts thru the yard!!
And that's my review of the Deutzia plant, which
      - let's not forget -
      I have never grown!!
      So, y'all should take all that info with a grain of google salt! 💚 💚 💚 💚 💚 💚 💚 💚 💚

I've got a few others to add to your excellent list that I grow in part shade in the UK for cutting. Nicotiana and Hesperis (sweet rocket) both give you great scent, Lunaria (Honesty) gives flowers in spring and then seed pods for dried flowers in autumn and Brunnera Macrophylla is a great shade perennial which provides forget-me-not type flowers throughout spring into early summer plus distinctive foliage.

I really enjoy your channel. I would very much like to learn to make a chicken wire floral frog. I’d like to know the disadvantages of floral foam.
    Thanks 😊

Thank you for this very helpful video. We have a cottage in Michigan that is surrounded by large, beautiful trees (and the challenging shade!) Your video has given me several ideas for flowers and shrubs that will be lovely additions to the landscape.

Maybe I missed something but I'm in Georgia and azaleas are mostly full sun. They grow in shade but at a much slower rate. My full sun azaleas are at least twice the size or more of the shade ones.

That is a wonderful list of shade loving plants, even if you don't make cut flower arrangements! Thank you!

Wonderful video. Just one suggestion; could you put the name of the plant on the screen with the plant.

I went to the link you provided to buy the rhododendron and it affirms it needs full sun. Is it going to bloom if planted in shaded/partial sun as your video recommends? Thank you
