hello mate! what a great feedback here and so much to think and take in. I agree with you entirely and sadly I was a bit misunderstood by the AI crowd and the ones in denial. This video got over 200 dislikes because I spoke the truth and I guess people are not ready to face reality. of course this will affect everyone particularly in the arts world! it has affected a lot of people I know personally already. but again there will be I think 2 sides to it, I think a lot of people will still value human made art but very few!
@@RicPuzzles Hi there Ric 🙂 I see a future when puzzle makers will have collections with what they’ll call, “artists’ originals”. I agree with you, the big brands won’t lower their prices, but they will charge a wee bit more for the privilege to own a “genuine” Aimee Stewart or Dominic Davison, as opposed to something that “likens” their output. Aside true collectors, how many puzzlers will bother to pay for authenticity? And what is the definition of authenticity? How many artists are already using AI to compose their creations? Are they cheating? It is still the artist’s work, isn’t it? What is the nature of art? What does anthropology have to say on the subject? I am going to work on a puzzle and ponder these questions.
This is so good, your questions couldn't be more valid mate! I ask myself all these questions all the time nowadays, not just in puzzleland but all aspects of art expressions. I agree too that we will end up paying a wee more for original work but we are evolving so much with technologies that what is original as you pointed out will shift in meaning as well. There are a few very interesting videos on TH-cam at that are raising awareness to a major shift that's starting to shape up in society in general and we will probably get the worst of it as the pioneers in it, or per set the guinea pigs before it all makes more sense and becomes part of a brighter more unified future. Same here, my older brother works for a large graphic design company that prints postcards and posters: he is seeing labor cuts on all aspects of the industry as one employee is able to do the work that previously needed 10, 20 people. Scary! 😢

Hi Ric, For me, this is simply panic-inducing. I think we're playing with a lot of things at the moment, attracted by the lure of novelty and the possibilities we see, but we're not weighing up all the consequences that will follow. On the other hand, it's impossible to curb human curiosity - it's what has made us strong (and sometimes lost) in the past. I don't think I'll ever buy AI-generated puzzles. At least, not knowingly. I'm passionate about art in all its forms, as long as it expresses human emotions. For me, there's no human warmth in artificial creation, no point of view, no transmission of something. It's sterile "art". So I may be an old lady, but I'll still buy my vintage puzzles that most people find boring, my reproductions of classical paintings because that's the only way I can afford them, the puzzles of contemporary illustrators because they do a great job, and I'll leave to others the soulless gradients and puzzles produced by the regurgitation of human art by a machine that understands nothing about it... But I have no doubt that it's going to become "hype", that prices are going to go up because of the novelty and that the repercussions in terms of employment are going to be catastrophic... well my friend, this is such a great feedback, thank you for that, this is what I wanted from this video, to hear your opinion too. Im the same Drewdee, I love my old "boring" puzzles so much, you will see my collection 4 video of the old Waddingtons very soon, I gave about 35 away recently because they were just using space but you might like the houses, the thatched villages there are so many beautiful older puzzles here and I sure now will not be giving a single one away haha. I couldn't agree more, no feelings, no emotion, what's the point? unless the image is very well done and has a story behind it, I find it to be dreadful. That is why I dont like the one solid colour puzzles, they feel like just cash cows for me. and thank you for your feedback. I like gradients....you can find some beautiful artist produced gradients like Aimee Stewarts water drop gradient by Buffalo puzzles....or Josie lewis work on buffalo puzzles

A fascinaing video Ric! You made some excellent points on both sides. I feel this will heavily impact the artists and could render them obsolete in the future. My favourite artists are Dominic Davison, David Maclean and Steve Crisp and each of those artists have a certain feel or mood to their puzzles. I'm sadden to know that all their hard work and passion for the art will no longer be need because of AI. I would hope and want puzzle companies to label their boxes "artist original" or "AI generated". This way I can make the decision on which type of puzzle I want to support. In regards to the price, I highly doubt that puzzle companies would reduce their price. Thanks so much for this intriguing video.

Brands can create a database from various means to generate specific themed puzzle effects (i.e., fantasy, skylines, dreamscape, syfy, and so on). I can also see this helpful when a puzzle is missing pieces, especially when a puzzle is out of print. There will be people on both sides being for A.I. dipping into the puzzle world 🤔

Yep im sure this ai situation is going to generate a lot of dilemmas as days go by as problems will emerge particularly in the ethical side of things and the job losses that will follow, either in mass or little by little, which will generate other issues on top of it all! Ok Ric, this was fantastic!!! I'm only just starting the vid so I won't say much more- but I did watch a great vid on how when companies buy the art they lay the puzzle cut digitally over the pic and then can add birds or whatever to make sure all pieces have a "clue" on them.

It's incredible, but still... how about the real artists? Will they lose their jobs? I think there is a tiny possibility that we won't need them in the future 😢 there is this puzzle company, extremely expensive in Poland but with a great quality of puzzle pieces called Magnolia. Now they realised a new "sub-brand" Yazz which is cheaper but with the same quality. How is that? They say, they don't need to pay for copyright. Why? Because almost all of their pictures are generated by AI. It it fair? For me no. And in my opinion pictures generated just by AI are creepy, I see that there is something not right with them, something disturbing. But future is here, we can't stop it.

Raija im scared and also a little happy but as i mentioned in the video this is so important for us to talk about because its really gonna change everything! And i see now from what you are saying that this is already happening for real! This company is indeed saving tons of money now by not needing artists. I think there should be some kind of regulation before its too late- it makes sense that no copyright means less expenses so there you go, it’s already happening right in front of our eyes isn’t it! That was something different and interesting, thank you very much. I liked that you brought in your perspective as an anthropologist. You made valid points. I would add the following thoughts concerning puzzle designs: As a commentator here already stated, AI generated images often look sorta creepy, and in my opinion that's especially the case with images of living beings where AI has its problems. You can check that for yourself on websites that show a new AI generated person every time you open them, and often you can somehow tell that there is something wrong. (I tried to put my finger on it and i think it's often clearly visible when you are looking at the earlobes, earrings, the course of wrinkles and the clothing, and somehow the pictures lack depth.) On the other side, when AI is used to generate or redesign a room (like some programs allow you to do it by adding a picture of a room of your home and choosing what style you want to redecorate it), the results are really, really amazing and i couldn't tell that this is AI generated. You can also generate fascinating environments that could not exist this way in reality and that are so beautiful to look at. That's just what i wanted to add designwise.

I enjoyed this very much, it’s very accurate and it shows what is happening now. A lotta my friends here in Brazil are using this technology and it’s scary what it can do. For sure jobs will be lost. @@RicPuzzles there will still be a place for designers and artists expert in the AI software. Similar to what has happened with professional photographers. Anyone can take a photo with their phones and then do basic editing. It is a true professional photographer/artist who knows composition, lighting and exceptional post photo editing. To me there is a clear difference in the quality, but I understand that many do not recognize the difference or chose to pay for the difference in quality. Many photographers have lost jobs and business over the recent years due to current technology.

Big 5 STARS on this video, I loved it!! This is absolutely incredible, and absolutely scary at the same time. It's amazing how far technology has come, and how it continues to take the place of actual work done by people. But as scary as this is, I am finding this AI world fascinating and exciting at the same time. I am no artist, but I have the vision/imagination. Having no artistic skills, I can still create my painting/image just by telling the computer my vision...it's incredible really, to be able to make my vision appear for other eyes to see. My husband has actually started delving into the AI world, and has created some amazing things with it. I guess his mindset is that if you can't beat it, join it LOL, because It's going to take over no matter what. Fun fact, my TH-cam banner was his creation. It's actually me as a Disney type character, which he created using actual photos of me and telling the computer to basically Disney-fy me. He's created other version of me based on styles of some of my favorite stories/universes. It's mind-blowing.

I am restoring family photos atm with this and the results are amazing- another positive aspect of this, if im taking someone else’s work by doing it myself? Thats the question i guess that i will have to live with 😁 it’s so cool to know your husband is into it too! That’s definitely an area that im very intrigued by atm, been using chat gpt to make some cool stuff too but again how much this will impact the industry is the big question! A few other comments here mention that friends and family are losing jobs over ai which is probably the biggest negative of all this and is mostly the focus of this video but as it is inevitable indeed, we might ad well at least know what it is and how it works and question all the aspects of it, and also make it an ally not an enemy of it! so thank you for the great input here. Wow, this was so interesting. I can't believe how the additional imaging matched with the original image. Amazing. I have mixed feelings on AI generated art. I know this is only the beginning of changes in the art world. I also do adult coloring and there is a lot of controversy in the coloring community with the books and artwork on the market. In the future, will puzzle companies have to say if an image is AI or artist created. I don't think the cost of puzzles will come down, but I think the companies have to realize that if they raise prices a lot, people won't be able to afford them. Ric, thank you for this incredibly important video about AI and how this will change the puzzle industry. I haven't been paying enough attention to the implications of AI as I am still heavily involved in my career. I haven't been using my small free time to learn about AI. I've been reading books or working puzzles instead. As I listened to your video, I became more and more anxious and upset. I am attracted to certain puzzles because of the ARTISTS. Let's take one example of a 20-year-old Springbok puzzle I have titled "Landscape" by Paul Gauguin. I believe Gauguin painted the original in 1894 in France at a time when he had broken up with his wife, returned to France, and was in financial difficulty - - difficult times for him. His post-impressionist view of the French countryside came from a place of his deep emotion. So, fast forward to the AI revolution and a puzzle maker decides to improve this puzzle - add cheerful elements and make sharper outlines around the trees to eliminate some of the heavy strokes. Will the culturally illiterate think this new version is a work by Gauguin after it is bastardized? Artists and their artwork are precious resources we should carefully guard. Yes, I plan to hoard my human-created puzzles and I will go out and buy more. I just hope that when I pass away that someone after me will see fit to preserve them and enjoy them for what they are.

As you said the soul and importance of each painting or art work is part of our experience with the puzzle isnt it? Now that we can retouch it to our needs i dont know how much if that soul will be completely lost! Lets hope for the best at this stage but im already seeing a surge in ‘weirdly’ perfect puzzles on the shelves, have you too?
@@RicPuzzles Yes, I have seen "weirdly" perfect puzzles. I think I bought one over the internet without full awareness until it arrived on my doorstep. Now, that I am looking at it closely, something is just not right about it. This all reminds me of the movie "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" (1956 and 1978 versions). Only, in this case, AI is taking over artists' artwork in puzzles or replacing it entirely.

AI may not be such a big deal for jigsaw puzzles. For though it is a tool, as any tool it takes some experience and knowledge to use it and get good results. I may have a hammer and a nail, but I would not know how to build a house. There is also artistry in designing a good jigsaw puzzle cut. While you could use a cut for any picture, those would be less enjoyable to puzzle compared to a custom cut for a particular image. What I however can visualize is that AI may be used as a supplement to making a jigsaw puzzle image, but which would need manual "cleaning" by an artist afterwards.
thats is very commendable feedback lone wolf. indeed, it will all come down to the companies and the people involved in the production of puzzles to make right use of the tool. Im glad to hear you are positive about it. I tried to remain impartial and give the viewers the 2 sides of the coin and glad to hear your thoughts on it. with the rate that AI is evolving for example since the time I posted this video, a few weeks were required to fix the image, now 2 months later, the same tech is now fully automated with little to no margin for errors, it has evolved to a point where no fixing is needed. a little scary!
This problem exists already with coloring books. But AI has limitations. For one, the images need cleaning and contain a lot of errors (a 7-finger hand anyone?). But more importantly, it uses existing art, it is not creative. Result, we end up with a lot of coloring pages that all look alike. I think that using AI will be really tempting at first, but after a while, puzzlers will demand more variety in style and subjects. The used puzzle market is florishing right now, but I predict that if the market is innundated with AI-designed image puzzles, the puzzles with artist and photograph images will be worth them weight in gold. As modifying or expanding the images that already exist, as your suggest, it would be possible and cheap only if the puzzle manufacturer owns the copyright on the image. If not, they will have to negociate with the artist or photograph, especially in countries where the artist or photograph keeps their moral rights on the image. So once again, may seem really interesting for the manufacturer, but may cause a lot of problems that will be solve in court... Not sure it would be worth saving a few hundreds or thousands on the artist to then pay ten times more to your attorney ;)

This was very interesting! I think that, if it's so easy to generate AI images, the puzzle companies will be even keener to stress that their designs are by professional artists to differentiate themselves from the AI products. The pictures your program generated are not something I would want to put together, however cheap they were. Maybe it's possible to give the program different/better instructions, but in that case the operator would have a skill, and it wouldn't be something that anyone could do. There is plenty of cheap rubbish around in all sorts of fields (clothes, dentistry etc) but still a lot of interest in the good stuff. Is a random AI-generated puzzle really going to compete seriously against an image by one of the popular artists? Thanks for the excellent input, indeed you raised very good points here, it is possible that there may be a backlash on AI as opposed to just embracing it completely and wishing for the best with all of the consequences-some of which i suggested in this video, i hope you were able to watch most of the video not just the examples i gave, but indeed this is a great time for us to ask all of those questions and have a more informed decision when we buy new puzzles. I would much rather have my favourite artists puzzles than a generic picture. Ahah absolutely right about giving it better instructions- as i said in my discussion after 18mins, i only used it for like 24hrs before making this video so im totally scratching the surface here with my crude examples but from what i have seen already online, very little experience is needed to get better results. Hi there, this is both scary and a good. I'm yet to experience AI puzzles and I'm not afraid to try, but...there's always a but...I feel sorry for the workforce too. Let's hope they find a solution. your videos are very good and useful. keep the good work.

Hi Ric, very informative and also scary video. I’m sorry, I’m in my 70’s and don’t see an upside to this. If they had created technology to free up humans to use their time for creative endeavors, I’m onboard. But that’s not going to happen. I’m sure young people will be irresistibly drawn to this and I think to their detriment. What value will there be in anything if anyone can push a button and make art appear? I’m a creative and a pleasure I get is sharing my art with others who appreciate it. I won’t want to see art or listen to music that your machine generated, I have my own machine! Another thing, your example of Ravensburger charging more money - if anything, they may have to fold due the fact that everyone will be able to make their own puzzles for a lot cheaper. Sorry about the long rant, I could write a book, and just may. All by myself!

I hope you were able to watch the points raised here and all the seriousness of it all, I'm the same, I like the idea of having less work and more time for the good stuff however sadly this issue is indeed a one side thing which again will only create divisions in society, not just on puzzles but on every product that we buy, I'm sure the cuts will be inevitable as more companies become aware of how easy it is to replace humans with computer now that this technology is evolving by the hour -unlike anything we had experienced before 2023. Let's keep our old puzzles at hand! An interesting video giving food for thought. Would I want an AI generated puzzle? Depends on how good the end product is. Donna Louise did a video about this subject three months ago - link here: th-cam.com/video/pi_5AYEmZ3g/w-d-xo.html She didn't appear to be overly impressed with the result. One could write to jigsaw companies and ask if AI will be a major part of their jigsaw production. If so are they going to put all their artists out of business. When you consider how varied images can be, could one person using a computer come up with enough images to keep a jigsaw company in profit? Only time will tell.

I have no experience at all, haha, but yes now you can literally just type in "make this or that" and it will be generated automatically in just seconds, as real as a photo, it's mind blowing!!! like in one of my videos I added a photo of me, and told the photoshop thingy to add boxed around me, it did in 8 seconds and no one can tell its fake, you may want to check out videos on TH-cam on how to start if you want to get started, I think it's super valid! might as well make it a tool not an enemy of AI eh 🤣 same here, lots of ideas but little skills hahaha. absolutely, thoughts to ponder about for sure!
O-M-G Ric this is the kind of video that we need to be watching, instead of videos glamourising AI and making it sound like it’s all gonna be a sea of roses. Thank you for exploring all the sides to it and for making it clear for me to understand what it is and how it works. I have to admit that i loved the Scotty castle change it looks amazing. I have had only heard of chat GPT and i’m aware of how much it can help people to create things, essays, video scripts and so on but it never occurred to me that this technology was so advanced already and readily available like that and ready to be used to make puzzles. I am sure that very soon the puzzles will end up being cheaply massed-produced and will hit our shelves just like you suggested, i have no doubt, this is too tempting for the big guys not to try 😅 but at what cost? I will continue to buy old puzzles, a reason why i love your channel so much, and hopefully i won’t be buying the next gen of puzzles. It never even crossed my mind that this was happening and haven’t seen anything similar on youtube. Thank you 🙏 🧩

hello mate! what a great feedback here and so much to think and take in. I agree with you entirely and sadly I was a bit misunderstood by the AI crowd and the ones in denial. This video got over 200 dislikes because I spoke the truth and I guess people are not ready to face reality. of course this will affect everyone particularly in the arts world! it has affected a lot of people I know personally already. but again there will be I think 2 sides to it, I think a lot of people will still value human made art but very few!

I see a future when puzzle makers will have collections with what they’ll call, “artists’ originals”.
I agree with you, the big brands won’t lower their prices, but they will charge a wee bit more for the privilege to own a “genuine” Aimee Stewart or Dominic Davison, as opposed to something that “likens” their output.
Aside true collectors, how many puzzlers will bother to pay for authenticity?
And what is the definition of authenticity? How many artists are already using AI to compose their creations? Are they cheating? It is still the artist’s work, isn’t it?
What is the nature of art? What does anthropology have to say on the subject?
I am going to work on a puzzle and ponder these questions.
This is so good, your questions couldn't be more valid mate! I ask myself all these questions all the time nowadays, not just in puzzleland but all aspects of art expressions. I agree too that we will end up paying a wee more for original work but we are evolving so much with technologies that what is original as you pointed out will shift in meaning as well. There are a few very interesting videos on TH-cam at that are raising awareness to a major shift that's starting to shape up in society in general and we will probably get the worst of it as the pioneers in it, or per set the guinea pigs before it all makes more sense and becomes part of a brighter more unified future. If I find some of these videos I can pass on to you here.

Same here, my older brother works for a large graphic design company that prints postcards and posters: he is seeing labor cuts on all aspects of the industry as one employee is able to do the work that previously needed 10, 20 people. Scary! 😢

For me, this is simply panic-inducing. I think we're playing with a lot of things at the moment, attracted by the lure of novelty and the possibilities we see, but we're not weighing up all the consequences that will follow. On the other hand, it's impossible to curb human curiosity - it's what has made us strong (and sometimes lost) in the past.
I don't think I'll ever buy AI-generated puzzles. At least, not knowingly. I'm passionate about art in all its forms, as long as it expresses human emotions. For me, there's no human warmth in artificial creation, no point of view, no transmission of something. It's sterile "art".
So I may be an old lady, but I'll still buy my vintage puzzles that most people find boring, my reproductions of classical paintings because that's the only way I can afford them, the puzzles of contemporary illustrators because they do a great job, and I'll leave to others the soulless gradients and puzzles produced by the regurgitation of human art by a machine that understands nothing about it...
But I have no doubt that it's going to become "hype", that prices are going to go up because of the novelty and that the repercussions in terms of employment are going to be catastrophic...

well my friend, this is such a great feedback, thank you for that, this is what I wanted from this video, to hear your opinion too. Im the same Drewdee, I love my old "boring" puzzles so much, you will see my collection 4 video of the old Waddingtons very soon, I gave about 35 away recently because they were just using space but you might like the houses, the thatched villages there are so many beautiful older puzzles here and I sure now will not be giving a single one away haha. I couldn't agree more, no feelings, no emotion, what's the point? unless the image is very well done and has a story behind it, I find it to be dreadful. That is why I dont like the one solid colour puzzles, they feel like just cash cows for me. and thank you for your feedback. I like gradients....you can find some beautiful artist produced gradients like Aimee Stewarts water drop gradient by Buffalo puzzles....or Josie lewis work on buffalo puzzles

A fascinaing video Ric! You made some excellent points on both sides. I feel this will heavily impact the artists and could render them obsolete in the future. My favourite artists are Dominic Davison, David Maclean and Steve Crisp and each of those artists have a certain feel or mood to their puzzles. I'm sadden to know that all their hard work and passion for the art will no longer be need because of AI. I would hope and want puzzle companies to label their boxes "artist original" or "AI generated". This way I can make the decision on which type of puzzle I want to support. In regards to the price, I highly doubt that puzzle companies would reduce their price. Thanks so much for this intriguing video.

Indeed mate, this is literally the 3rd month of this new tech which will now move to videos, they are about to announce the video update which will then render all Hollywood actors for example obsolete, we are about to see a change in the world as we had never experienced in human history and the puzzles are just a very small grain in the sand in all this
Brands can create a database from various means to generate specific themed puzzle effects (i.e., fantasy, skylines, dreamscape, syfy, and so on). I can also see this helpful when a puzzle is missing pieces, especially when a puzzle is out of print. There will be people on both sides being for A.I. dipping into the puzzle world 🤔

Yep im sure this ai situation is going to generate a lot of dilemmas as days go by as problems will emerge particularly in the ethical side of things and the job losses that will follow, either in mass or little by little, which will generate other issues on top of it all! Ok Ric, this was fantastic!!! I'm only just starting the vid so I won't say much more- but I did watch a great vid on how when companies buy the art they lay the puzzle cut digitally over the pic and then can add birds or whatever to make sure all pieces have a "clue" on them.

It's incredible, but still... how about the real artists? Will they lose their jobs? I think there is a tiny possibility that we won't need them in the future 😢 there is this puzzle company, extremely expensive in Poland but with a great quality of puzzle pieces called Magnolia. Now they realised a new "sub-brand" Yazz which is cheaper but with the same quality. How is that? They say, they don't need to pay for copyright. Why? Because almost all of their pictures are generated by AI. It it fair? For me no. And in my opinion pictures generated just by AI are creepy, I see that there is something not right with them, something disturbing. But future is here, we can't stop it.

Raija im scared and also a little happy but as i mentioned in the video this is so important for us to talk about because its really gonna change everything! And i see now from what you are saying that this is already happening for real! This company is indeed saving tons of money now by not needing artists. I think there should be some kind of regulation before its too late- it makes sense that no copyright means less expenses so there you go, it’s already happening right in front of our eyes isn’t it! That was something different and interesting, thank you very much. I liked that you brought in your perspective as an anthropologist. You made valid points. I would add the following thoughts concerning puzzle designs: As a commentator here already stated, AI generated images often look sorta creepy, and in my opinion that's especially the case with images of living beings where AI has its problems. You can check that for yourself on websites that show a new AI generated person every time you open them, and often you can somehow tell that there is something wrong. (I tried to put my finger on it and i think it's often clearly visible when you are looking at the earlobes, earrings, the course of wrinkles and the clothing, and somehow the pictures lack depth.) On the other side, when AI is used to generate or redesign a room (like some programs allow you to do it by adding a picture of a room of your home and choosing what style you want to redecorate it), the results are really, really amazing and i couldn't tell that this is AI generated. You can also generate fascinating environments that could not exist this way in reality and that are so beautiful to look at. That's just what i wanted to add designwise.

@@RicPuzzles there will still be a place for designers and artists expert in the AI software. Similar to what has happened with professional photographers. Anyone can take a photo with their phones and then do basic editing. It is a true professional photographer/artist who knows composition, lighting and exceptional post photo editing. To me there is a clear difference in the quality, but I understand that many do not recognize the difference or chose to pay for the difference in quality. Many photographers have lost jobs and business over the recent years due to current technology.

The prices will never go down- I do think some puzzles are priced WAY too high as is- but I think because I don't do them more than once!

This is absolutely incredible, and absolutely scary at the same time. It's amazing how far technology has come, and how it continues to take the place of actual work done by people. But as scary as this is, I am finding this AI world fascinating and exciting at the same time. I am no artist, but I have the vision/imagination. Having no artistic skills, I can still create my painting/image just by telling the computer my vision...it's incredible really, to be able to make my vision appear for other eyes to see. My husband has actually started delving into the AI world, and has created some amazing things with it. I guess his mindset is that if you can't beat it, join it LOL, because It's going to take over no matter what. Fun fact, my TH-cam banner was his creation. It's actually me as a Disney type character, which he created using actual photos of me and telling the computer to basically Disney-fy me. He's created other version of me based on styles of some of my favorite stories/universes. It's mind-blowing.

That’s definitely an area that im very intrigued by atm, been using chat gpt to make some cool stuff too but again how much this will impact the industry is the big question! A few other comments here mention that friends and family are losing jobs over ai which is probably the biggest negative of all this and is mostly the focus of this video but as it is inevitable indeed, we might ad well at least know what it is and how it works and question all the aspects of it, and also make it an ally not an enemy of it! so thank you for the great input here. I kind of wondered you were a very creative person, i bet you’re a pisces as well! 😅 i know this vid may come across as sensationalist but it seems to be working, people are paying attention at least and adding their thoughts which is so priceless! If you have adobe cloud membership you should try this beta version of photoshop, it’s worth at least giving it a go too!
Wow, this was so interesting. I can't believe how the additional imaging matched with the original image. Amazing. I have mixed feelings on AI generated art. I know this is only the beginning of changes in the art world. I also do adult coloring and there is a lot of controversy in the coloring community with the books and artwork on the market. In the future, will puzzle companies have to say if an image is AI or artist created. I don't think the cost of puzzles will come down, but I think the companies have to realize that if they raise prices a lot, people won't be able to afford them. Ric, thank you for this incredibly important video about AI and how this will change the puzzle industry. I haven't been paying enough attention to the implications of AI as I am still heavily involved in my career. I haven't been using my small free time to learn about AI. I've been reading books or working puzzles instead. As I listened to your video, I became more and more anxious and upset. I am attracted to certain puzzles because of the ARTISTS. Let's take one example of a 20-year-old Springbok puzzle I have titled "Landscape" by Paul Gauguin. I believe Gauguin painted the original in 1894 in France at a time when he had broken up with his wife, returned to France, and was in financial difficulty - - difficult times for him. His post-impressionist view of the French countryside came from a place of his deep emotion. So, fast forward to the AI revolution and a puzzle maker decides to improve this puzzle - add cheerful elements and make sharper outlines around the trees to eliminate some of the heavy strokes. Will the culturally illiterate think this new version is a work by Gauguin after it is bastardized? Artists and their artwork are precious resources we should carefully guard. Yes, I plan to hoard my human-created puzzles and I will go out and buy more. I just hope that when I pass away that someone after me will see fit to preserve them and enjoy them for what they are.

As you said the soul and importance of each painting or art work is part of our experience with the puzzle isnt it? Now that we can retouch it to our needs i dont know how much if that soul will be completely lost! Lets hope for the best at this stage but im already seeing a surge in ‘weirdly’ perfect puzzles on the shelves, have you too?
@@RicPuzzles Yes, I have seen "weirdly" perfect puzzles. I think I bought one over the internet without full awareness until it arrived on my doorstep. Now, that I am looking at it closely, something is just not right about it. This all reminds me of the movie "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" (1956 and 1978 versions). Only, in this case, AI is taking over artists' artwork in puzzles or replacing it entirely.

AI may not be such a big deal for jigsaw puzzles. For though it is a tool, as any tool it takes some experience and knowledge to use it and get good results. I may have a hammer and a nail, but I would not know how to build a house. There is also artistry in designing a good jigsaw puzzle cut. While you could use a cut for any picture, those would be less enjoyable to puzzle compared to a custom cut for a particular image. What I however can visualize is that AI may be used as a supplement to making a jigsaw puzzle image, but which would need manual "cleaning" by an artist afterwards.
thats is very commendable feedback lone wolf. indeed, it will all come down to the companies and the people involved in the production of puzzles to make right use of the tool. Im glad to hear you are positive about it. I tried to remain impartial and give the viewers the 2 sides of the coin and glad to hear your thoughts on it. with the rate that AI is evolving for example since the time I posted this video, a few weeks were required to fix the image, now 2 months later, the same tech is now fully automated with little to no margin for errors, it has evolved to a point where no fixing is needed. a little scary!
This problem exists already with coloring books. But AI has limitations. For one, the images need cleaning and contain a lot of errors (a 7-finger hand anyone?). But more importantly, it uses existing art, it is not creative. Result, we end up with a lot of coloring pages that all look alike. I think that using AI will be really tempting at first, but after a while, puzzlers will demand more variety in style and subjects. The used puzzle market is florishing right now, but I predict that if the market is innundated with AI-designed image puzzles, the puzzles with artist and photograph images will be worth them weight in gold.
As modifying or expanding the images that already exist, as your suggest, it would be possible and cheap only if the puzzle manufacturer owns the copyright on the image. If not, they will have to negociate with the artist or photograph, especially in countries where the artist or photograph keeps their moral rights on the image. So once again, may seem really interesting for the manufacturer, but may cause a lot of problems that will be solve in court... Not sure it would be worth saving a few hundreds or thousands on the artist to then pay ten times more to your attorney ;)

This was very interesting! I think that, if it's so easy to generate AI images, the puzzle companies will be even keener to stress that their designs are by professional artists to differentiate themselves from the AI products. The pictures your program generated are not something I would want to put together, however cheap they were. Maybe it's possible to give the program different/better instructions, but in that case the operator would have a skill, and it wouldn't be something that anyone could do. There is plenty of cheap rubbish around in all sorts of fields (clothes, dentistry etc) but still a lot of interest in the good stuff. Is a random AI-generated puzzle really going to compete seriously against an image by one of the popular artists? Wouldn't we rather have one lovely Chuck Pinson or Aimee Stewart puzzle than half a dozen AI-generated images "in the style of" those artists?

Thanks for the excellent input, indeed you raised very good points here, it is possible that there may be a backlash on AI as opposed to just embracing it completely and wishing for the best with all of the consequences-some of which i suggested in this video, i hope you were able to watch most of the video not just the examples i gave, but indeed this is a great time for us to ask all of those questions and have a more informed decision when we buy new puzzles. I would much rather have my favourite artists puzzles than a generic picture. Ahah absolutely right about giving it better instructions- as i said in my discussion after 18mins, i only used it for like 24hrs before making this video so im totally scratching the surface here with my crude examples but from what i have seen already online, very little experience is needed to get better results. Hi Ric, very informative and also scary video. I’m sorry, I’m in my 70’s and don’t see an upside to this. If they had created technology to free up humans to use their time for creative endeavors, I’m onboard. But that’s not going to happen. I’m sure young people will be irresistibly drawn to this and I think to their detriment. What value will there be in anything if anyone can push a button and make art appear? I’m a creative and a pleasure I get is sharing my art with others who appreciate it. I won’t want to see art or listen to music that your machine generated, I have my own machine! Another thing, your example of Ravensburger charging more money - if anything, they may have to fold due the fact that everyone will be able to make their own puzzles for a lot cheaper. Sorry about the long rant, I could write a book, and just may. All by myself!

An interesting video giving food for thought. Would I want an AI generated puzzle? Depends on how good the end product is. Donna Louise did a video about this subject three months ago - link here: th-cam.com/video/pi_5AYEmZ3g/w-d-xo.html She didn't appear to be overly impressed with the result. One could write to jigsaw companies and ask if AI will be a major part of their jigsaw production. If so are they going to put all their artists out of business. When you consider how varied images can be, could one person using a computer come up with enough images to keep a jigsaw company in profit? Only time will tell.

I have no experience at all, haha, but yes now you can literally just type in "make this or that" and it will be generated automatically in just seconds, as real as a photo, it's mind blowing!!! like in one of my videos I added a photo of me, and told the photoshop thingy to add boxed around me, it did in 8 seconds and no one can tell its fake, you may want to check out videos on TH-cam on how to start if you want to get started, I think it's super valid! might as well make it a tool not an enemy of AI eh 🤣 same here, lots of ideas but little skills hahaha. absolutely, thoughts to ponder about for sure!

O-M-G Ric this is the kind of video that we need to be watching, instead of videos glamourising AI and making it sound like it’s all gonna be a sea of roses. Thank you for exploring all the sides to it and for making it clear for me to understand what it is and how it works. I have to admit that i loved the Scotty castle change it looks amazing. I have had only heard of chat GPT and i’m aware of how much it can help people to create things, essays, video scripts and so on but it never occurred to me that this technology was so advanced already and readily available like that and ready to be used to make puzzles. I am sure that very soon the puzzles will end up being cheaply massed-produced and will hit our shelves just like you suggested, i have no doubt, this is too tempting for the big guys not to try 😅 but at what cost? I will continue to buy old puzzles, a reason why i love your channel so much, and hopefully i won’t be buying the next gen of puzzles. It never even crossed my mind that this was happening and haven’t seen anything similar on youtube. Thank you 🙏 🧩
