Thanks Mike. As an amateur drummer who sits in from time to time this is really a great learning video for me. It’s nice to see that a pro gets nervous about drumming without a lot of rehearsal. Would love to see how you write cheat charts for sit in gigs. Thanks again. Excellent video.
Really enjoyed this! I've had the pleasure of playing with Fox Menagerie and writing with Joe alot down here in Nashville. Dave is a cool guy. Cool channel you got here and I hope to see ya down the road sometime. Cheers Mike! -Carey
I legitimately have recurring nightmares of having to fill in with a band and not having any rehearsals or charts. It was great to see some of your process and hear your thought process.
Michael, Mike, Mikey, what ever title you want to go by, it’s all so so good. Wow, this episode you gave us is top shelf, the cat’s meow, as cool as the other side of the pillow, as smooth as spreading warm butter over freshly bake bread, and to infinity and beyond. You taking us deep into the game within the game is so muchly appreciated. This is maybe the best one ever, as it is so out of the ordinary. Well played, my young friend.❤️🙏👏❤️🙏👏❤️
Hey Mike, that was fun coming to the gig with you. I'm retired now, but I did plenty just like it. Your self appraisal is maybe a little harsh. You did a great job mate. Don't be too hard on yourself about the "whooops" moments. We all have 'em.
Thanks Mike! I play with a click at church but everyone hears it. I also do a ton of sitting in, but this is crazy where the drummer only hears the click. Awesome playing!
The church setting is really the only other place (Aside from studio work I guess) where I play with a click, so this was an outlier in my regular work.
Drumming comes with so much pressure man. People don't realise that if you fuck up, everything is ruined. I subbed for 2 tours with a hardcore/trash metal band in europe and north america. Most nerve wracking experience of my life. Even today with original songs with parts I wrote myself I have the fear of blacking out on stage. If you have tips on managing drummer's stress I'm interested haha
Well I'll tell ya whut, I'll tell ya whut. I'm only a third of the way in, and I'm impressed. The pocket and timing was so clean you could eat off of it. And I'm digging the professionalism you're displaying. Heck, I'm over here reflecting on myself. 😂 Primarily because I'm disciplined enough to hold the pocket, but I'll take my freedom to express where I can. Not saying that I'll put myself above the song, tho. I always gotta put the song first. It's just that I enjoy taking my expressive liberties in the space established within the song if I got it. (I.e., I'll preserve the patterns and energy of the song, but try to speak with my own voice.) And that may be something that I need to work on. The people I play with don't complain as long as I do my job and am open to constructive criticism, but I'll acknowledge I can grow in this area. Whereas for you, you _forego_ that freedom so you can push the song and the band to higher heights. Lol. I have to respect that. When you're summoned, you leave very little details unaccounted for, and that's remarkable. And the ones that slip through you recover from very well. Awesome work. Plus, gotta give kudos to the band. That reharmonization on Ain't No Sunshine was a sight to behold. That flat 2nd in the progression hit SO different. 😂😂😂😂😂
I do some subbing every now and then and struggle without the aide of charts and clicks. I would love for someone like yourself to share your I Pad use during a show. It would be great to get a heads up on how to chart with a click and have that available in realtime during the show. Also I enjoy your content so much, keep it going!
I use ForScore and you can do both in that one app. Plenty of great tutorials about how to use it out there already, so I won’t worry about making one.
Cool interesting vid. Great sound on the kit and loved the grooves. One thing though, and maybe because I'm a little older, I do like some sort of dress code on stage. The music and sets are obviously well put together and pro level and I think their dress style should match that level. Their style doesn't do this band justice. But very cool overall!
I think in summer especially (in the elements), the style/dress code takes a slight back seat to being comfortable in the weather. Performing has a physical toll, so got to be able to be comfy for an extended period of time.
Nice video. Thanks. Nice band. Nice drumming. Nice recording ...how is it done? Mixer recording? I like video's: how do you do it, behind the scenes, you approach, your preparation, your gigs, your bands, your rehearsals, your recordings, your planning, on the raod again, your gear and setups, transport and storage, etc. etc. There are enough channels with how to do a standard rock beat or how to do this amazing fast almost impossible rock beat using my breakdown and analysis, etc. Regarding the band. I see many musicians, singers and many great drummers. When there are so much great drummers it is difficult to get/keep a place/position on stage / in the band. On the other hand with so much musicians and singers you can build a network. Finding your niche is important but is the niche to small it is difficult to build a solid income or as an amateur to keep/ get a place/position. I recently had to invest in getting further in my niche (same groups in the niche) and expanding the niche (other genres).
Generally the bass is all you can hear to get your cues as a drummer. Even with loud rock music all you can hear is the bass. Which makes me wonder how guns and roses and nirvana faired when their bass players were OD on heroin while playing.
Ha, well i work with some amazing singers, pianists, guitarists, and horn players who all have good cue ability, but it can be tough to learn how to read somebody who isn’t strong at it.
I like your signature fill rule since I agree with it. Too bad drummers in other cover bands in my town have decided to ruin so many songs by playing fills that don’t exist in the song.
I see the desire for a click, and understand in order for everyone to have (especially in a 9-10 piece band) there's so much tech that has to get involved. I don't enjoy it, but I see why it ends up this way.
Ugh! Sorry but I can't stand this band, they're so TACKY ! Giving everything a R&B, funk, or motown groove, even songs that weren't meant to be like that, they just sound like they're trying too hard to be fun and cool, just so corny. Anyways just my taste, but you did a good job with it !
Dude! Great video. I relate to a lot of your ideas and thoughts. But your playing on the last song is insane. I've got to use that somehow
Appreciate it, that last song is certainly the one I get to stretch out on. Always fun
Love this style of video! Those song transitions are so impressive and really make a great show. Y’all are crushing!
Thanks so much!!
They are one of my favorite bands in the area. This was such a fun perspective!
Glad to hear that!

I talked about it in this video a bit: th-cam.com/video/hx0X__A_oGU/w-d-xo.htmlsi=16fOLFjCaLvGymh_
I played a few gigs with Sinéad a few years ago. One of the best vocalists of all time.
Very cool!
Really enjoyed the sound of the band and how you make your way through each song. Nice drumming 😊
Thanks for listening

dude this awesome! Love to hear your point of view while playing live.
Yeah, I'd love to hear more musicians I respect explain their thought process in a setting like this.
One of your best vids yet!
Glad you dug it!
Very nice work. You are a total pro.
Appreciate it 🙏

You need to do more of these, seeing the thought process of someone with your experience is very helpful
Im happy to hear that, I'd like to do some more of this!
Great video format Mike! Awesome band too 💪
Thanks much!
Interesting perspective on your way to tackle such a challenge!
Thank you!
@@malonedrum would love to see more practical application gigging/studio stuff, super helpful!

Simple and tasty playing
Would love to see the whole set
Ha, I wanted to keep it reasonable, not 2+ hours.

Mess up more. Once you’ve made enough mistakes, they don’t stress you out nearly as much as when you’re starting out.
Love the 1979 cover.
Thanks
That was super interesting to watch & that band COOKS! 🍳
Fun group for sure!

GREAT JOB ! It's not easy playing live for the first time with a picky band - hope they paid U well.
They take of the band for sure, and the time investing the first go around paid off heavily on the few more times I've subbed in this fall.
Great vid! What iPad app do you use for charts and those hats sound awesome! what size are they?
ForScore.
14” Bosphorus Master HH
Are you using forScore for your music and metronome?
Yes to both.
Good job man 😀 not liking the muzak/ Scary Pockets' arrangements, but love your adaptability.
Fair enough, thanks for watching.

This was multitracked from the sound company, and then I mixed it before syncing up with the video.

It’s pronounced ‘Shin-ade’. She was Irish. Nice video.

It's a fine line, and somewhat subjective. Plenty go songs that I don't care to learn note for note or what some might think are important fills.
Great job
Thanks
This is so far from the original arrangement, don't feel bad about missing those hits. Fun fact: Prince wrote this song.
Another artist with Prince's fingerprints all over it!
Not going to lie, this not my thing, but hell talented all of ya……
Appreciate that
That’s why I wouldn’t play with click of the whole band isn’t using it! Seems like could be a problem if someone wasn’t as good as you

I'd disagree, but you're certainly entitled to not enjoy a band.
