Very practical boat, I'm impressed. Probably can even hold a course with that rig without gybing while sleeping on passage. As long as the wind doesn't change direction you go the direction you want. Love it
This boat is so awesome. I have so much respect for this man and admiration people don't even know lol it's basically my dream boat I wish I could just drop everything and build one assuming I was the mechanically ignorant/slow to learn man I am. Also assuming I wasn't a college student (of literature no less lol) and could actually afford the materials.
Aaron, trust me your dream will come true. Slow and steady and never give up on the goal. I was blown away on how Fred navigated the boat into shore without incident. A lot of skill and practise what a great hobby business that he truly loves. Keep dreaming kid!
I'd like to know dimensions (in general) of "open area". Would 4 adults fit comfortably ? I hope you make a 20-25 foot version of this, I love the open daysailer boat with a small cabin in rear design !
A Whimsical design, to say the least. I'm not convinced by the sail plan : two sail on a boat of this size seems less effective tan a single bigger sail … All tis to be discussed I guess …
If you think about it, most small boats have 2 sails rather than 1: a jib and a mainsail on the same mast. However, this is different because it is a cat schooner. That's 2 masts, with the main one aft, and only 1 sail on each. The advantages are that the sail area is divided into two easily manageable parts, and the centre of effort is lower than it would be if the same sail area was in one large sail of the same shape. That means less heeling in a strong wind, and that in turn means more efficiency and comfort. Two shortish masts instead of one long one can reduce or even remove the need for stays and shrouds, reducing complexity, cost and windage. Also, shorter masts and spars are cheaper and easier to source, and much easier to store and transport. There are pros and cons, of course, but this boat is ideal for its likely purpose. A conventional Bermudan sloop rig would convert a given sail area into speed more efficiently, but that is not the only measure of an efficient or fun boat. :)
@Jakob For a cruising dinghy, sharing the sail plan between two masts can be really useful. It makes it easier to balance the helm for long periods while the boat is on a steady bearing. It can help with keeping the boat head to wind while anchoring, or reefing. Admittedly the cat schooner is an unusual option compared to the more common yawl. However, it's a legitimate rig for a particular purpose. It is probably less aerodynamically efficient than a sloop with the same sail area, but that is only one measure of efficiency.

? lol i'm not sure how to take that

Outstanding video with respect to understanding Shell Boats and excellent demonstration of ease of launching and sailing the Schooner 18.
I have so much respect for this man
Marvellous sails well very quick
Interesting, little concerned over the low freeboard height. How would it go in none sheltered waters.

He has a 21 foot version
How tall are the masts? And what construction type on them?
What rig is the schooner
Looked like the Red & Green show for a sec. How much duck tape is on that hull? Yes I said duck
How long does it take for you to craft the boat?
I love this boat, but I'm afraid I wouldn't buy a boat off anybody if I knew they bottomed it every time they got on and off
Omg stfu
It has dual skegs with metal protection. These serve as fixed leeboards too.
what are the cabin dimensions?

Спасибо за материал!!! Неее!!! Я бы гики стакселей на место поставил!!!
I have spent months researching into building boats and discovered a fantastic website at Denelle Boat Builder (google it if you're interested)

He should get that stinky outboard off there, it ruins the purity of the whole thing.
