    You would think Brian would be pretty knowledgeable about beer having hosted a show for almost 10 years about getting beer for free, but Rubio knew something had to be done when he saw Brian constantly interrupting a bartender with, "YOUR PRODUCT IS SWILL," and "I DEMAND ANOTHER, BARSERVENT!" He just kept throwing dirty nickels down the bar trying to land them in patron's drinks, it was really uncalled for.

    They should make cans that require you to solve a puzzle to open it. That way, when you've had enough to drink, you just can't open the cans anymore.

      If you are that drunk, you would just open it with a knife or something stupid lol. Cool idea though. Actually a really cool idea. You should contact some breweries about that.
      I could see a limited special from like Three-Floyds Brewery like, "Puzzle Masters Labrynth IPA Limited" 11.5%
      Have some cheap plastic puzzle that somehow locks in to the bottle. And you have to solve it to get the cap off with out breaking it. Charge extra obviously, make it an "exclusive" item ya know? Maybe have like a Willy Wonka spin an give out a few bottles in the mix that give you something free if you visit the brewery. The more I think about this the more I think you sir, are a god damned genius, Uncle Phil.
      If you don't want to pitch that idea, I sure as hell will.

      we used to throw the beer in the bottom of a swimming pool and if you were too drunk to dive in and get one off the bottom, you couldn't drink. Of course this was decades ago when we were all young and very dumb.. now that I look back I am glad no one ever died

    This is quite interesting to me, when you go to a bar in germany, they typicaly have three or four different pilseners, one or two weizen, a stout and one or two ales.
    That usually does it for me, but i find your system of craft beers quite interesting, the one time i've been to the US i sadly couldn't go drinking (I'm 20) but your beer culture fascinated me.
    I think one of the reasons german tourists to america often think your beer is bad, are the bigger brands such as budweiser and whatever,(I tried them, they are truly horrible) whereas they don't see the local breweries that propably produce amazing beer.
    Thanks for the great video, though it's not of much use to me in Germany. Cheers!

      I work at a microbrewery/bar. We only sell the beer we make. (And it is insanely good) I've worked there since I was 18 and now I'm 21 and I've never had one of those shit beers (budlight, Coors, etc). I'd love to come to Germany and try your guys beer someday and I hope you get the chance to come back here and try all of ours.

    The pub I used to go to in Dublin had 20 beers on tap and they'd give out samples. Like, you could go up to the counter and tell them what kind of characteristics you're looking for and they'd give you one or two shot glasses of beer to decide. Great pub. And yeah, I had that moment of walking into the pub and the bartender greeting me with "Nice to see ya again, we have a new beer that should be right up your alley" and handing me a sample.

    22:19 I really cant stress that one more isnt always one more enough. I work at a brewery and this summer the majority of our beers were 6.5% and over and I've seen a lot of people go for a 'one more' that's 7 or 8 percent and if you're not used to drinking high abv craft beer that can easily equal 2 or possibly 3 regular beers

    in regards to aged beer i have had a 21 year old stout that my best friends dad made and forgot about for 21 years, it was amazing, we were all a bit trepidatious about trying it but it was by far the best beer i have EVER had

    As a diabetic I was told if I where to drink a beer to make sure it is light I told my diabetic educator well light beer taste like pee water I really like a local brewing company owned by a guy I went to school with he made a beer with a lower carb count but with a higher alcohol content

      Though really, I didn't actually drink almost anything till I was over 20 anyways, and didn't really explore anything till I was 21, so these videos are still really helpful for me to learn and explore everything.
      Yeah, I know, I'm super adventurous. I only drank a few times before then, and even so, the first time was because of my mom, of all people, and a former exchange student when I was over 18.

      @@jafarym77 Where I live it's insanely easy to get alcohol. But I'm just like the original commenter. I never really drank until I was 21 had a beer here and there but never got drunk. Alcoholism runs very deep in my family so that's why I waited and used it responsibly.

    Funny story, when living in Belgium I used to see in the supermarket a box of beer with a medieval knight on. Loved the illustration, but stuck to those I knew already. I eventually got to know that one was good, so I tried, easily a beer I could pick as my favourite if I had to choose one.

    i'm from ontario, most beer stores here (and liquor stores, as well as the micro brewers), have refrigerated walk-ins, a good distance away from the windows, or store fronts where you order from, and your beer comes from cold storage at the back...
    ...and a lot of the bars i've gone to lately, the bartenders will know a lot of details about what they carry, and most voluntarily "offer" a sample to aid your decision...one place near me actually has what they call a rotating special where they put a keg from a local on as a daily, and once that keg is done, they change to a different beer, not always from the same brewery, plus they have a weekly (usually ordered from a brewery that received positive remarks from the customers about the daily) , where a brew is on "rotation" for 6 days, and on the 7th, once the keg is empty, they change the special. (i discovered an extremely nice tasting coffee stout from a local micro this way)...
    ...as for the singles, i try to grab at least 2 or 3 of something i've never had with every visit (i don't have a "favorite" flave, so will try almost anything)
    (it's something i've done for many years...even before the micro explosion..i had tried everything the beer store served so was going to the liquor store trying imports...now with all the micros and new imports, i have hundreds of new flavors to try...probably will never be able to try them all...lol)

    This is a rather unsophisticated outlook on drinkin, but it’s held up for me for a long time now. I was a teenager drinking beer with my dad after working on our ranch all day. He told me “son, there’s a lot of brands and types of beer you’ll try throughout your life, but I can tell you now, that your favorite flavor should always be “free”, and after that your favorite flavor is “cold”.”

      Lol I like that story but maybe I'm just pretentious and a beer snob (not maybe I am but I'm self aware) and not all beers should be cold. Depends on the style. But a nice cold west coast IPA on a summer day damn dude I am there for it.

    For what its worth, Utah alcohol laws are very specific. Grocery stores cannot sell anything above 3.2% ABW which is about 4.0% ABV in a 12 oz can. If you brew beer in "house" like a brewery, there is no limit. They also just recently just changed the food law as well. Bars used to have to sell food and only serve alcohol if people were eating. That just changed but the age limits entering are now required to be posted. There IS good craft beer in Utah that is higher than 3.2%. Cheers!

    I really loved this video guys, I don't drink now, haven't for 3+ years, but I was very into whiskey and beer when I did.     When I used to drink, swore I would get drunk faster on tap beer vs bottle/can. Idk.. even justified it by saying there was more O2 in tap beer so it would get absorbed faster in the blood stream. Ahhh those were the -good- bad ol days! Now have 7.5 years clean.

    Here in Brazil some cities have a Barminha, or, Baratona. Basic we go running from bar to bar, sit and drink a beer, them, run to the next bar.

    If you have the option to go to a Growler Shop if possible, I recommend going there. Depending on local laws, they offer a few tastes as a matter of course and the employees are almost always very knowledgeable about beer (because unlike traditional bars, beer is pretty much all they do).

    Regarding beer, Utah law for restaurants and non-liquor stores is not more than 3.2% alcohol by weight or 4% by volume. Anything stronger can only be purchased in bars and state liquor stores.

    10:40 It's interesting what you guys say about the relative cost per volume of beer in cans v 750ml bottles. In South Africa, 750ml bottles are referred to as 'quarts', and they're generally the cheapest (and in the case of certain brands, freshest) option for beer. Over here, the relative cost for a six pack of 500ml cans, or 330ml bottles, will be about 20% higher than the cost of the same volume of beer in quarts.

    I've also found that some pubs have a beer card that gives a full description of the beers they offer. They will also say if they have it on tap or on nitrogen.

    On the topic of dirty tap lines- AB distributors are required to clean all their tap accounts once every two weeks which also assured that they will clean the taps of all the craft brews that distributor might carry. So check and see what your local bud guy distributes and choose accordingly :)

    About the glass at bars; dont go to a bar thats content with serving you fine spirits in beaten up glasses. You might think that it doesnt matter but glass isnt actually flavorless or scentless, it will leave a slight stone/sand flavour in your spirit and can ruin the taste if you know the drink well.
    Another tip to find good bars imo is to ask what they use to mix certain drinks with. If they deviate from what should be used (like khalua for a white russian, thats very common here in Sweden atleast) and use cheaper mixers thats a red flag. If the bartender or the owner skimp on quality just for the sake of cost you will likely not get the taste you expect and that can ruin your night.

    The point made at 21:00 is very relatable. I remember going from Crown (Australian beer) to Stella Artois. I personally enjoy Stella, but after having tasted the much heavier Crown, it tasted like water.

    I went to a busy traditional English pub which actually charged for tasters, presumably to stop people from wasting the staff's time. I worked out it was cheaper to buy 16 tasters of a beer than one whole pint of an equal volume.

    When I go to a beer shop I usually buy a few beers that I know I will like and then I ask the person who works or even better the owner to recommend a couple of beers to me.

    the sole reason why beer from a bottle is most likely (not in all cases) better is because the can that canned beer comes in makes the beer taste a bit metalic, that's what the alluminum does to the beer, some company's use a silicon liner in the can so that doesn't happen but most of em don't do that.
    So if you buy your beer look for those things and go for the bottle if you can :).

      I would argue it's the opposite. In fact, don't we make the case for cans in this video? Or is that the 7 tips video? Anyways, cans are generally gonna be the better bet. They protect from light, have a better seal, and you aren't gonna find a can that doesn't use a liner. that is standard. Also, generally cheaper and easier for storage.

    There was one bar in my home town growing up, I know the owners and all the staff. I love that place and I get free beers every so often, but I tip them all real well.

    I usually dig to the back of the cooler, where the lights not so bright, whenever buying bottled beer. With open coolers it's dig deep where the beer's been kept the coolest.

    If you've ever lied in a hot climate, you'll understand and appreciate frosted glasses. It prevents the beer/drink/whatever from becoming too warm before you manage to finish it. The less watery beer you drink, the hotter and thirstier you are, the nicer it is to loose some of the intensity and have some refreshment and cooling down yourself before enjoying a beer before it overheats. It also makes you undersand and appreciate lemon in some kind of beers for the refreshment factor.

    I find this very interesting how the US is compared to Finland. In Finland we have a government owned monopoly on alcohol stores, Alko. Alko has actual labels on many drinks on what food they work with and the singular cans have to be the same price as a single can in a 6 pack or 24 pack or whatever pack, so the packs will always cost more

    Oh my goodness yes! I loved the Black Company series! Oddly years later when my kids started watching a cartoon called ninjago I swear they were inspired by the series... Any parents or I guess others that have also happened to experienced both notice the similarity?

    heads up in the UK it's different with regaurds to ettiquette. if you don't like what you've bought, you drink it and make a mental note to never drink it again. you'll have at least one ale on tap, at least one cider, and a bunch of lagers.
    half pints are available, but people will probably laugh at you.

    I have this one friend. He generally offers beer to his friends. I always thought his beer tasted super weird and kinda like it's gone bad or something. Then I started looking at the "consume by" dates. Literally all of them were like three years back. All of his beer. I still don't know why he had at least half a year worth of old beer.

      You can age a lot of beer for years and it will change the character of the beer a bit. A lot of beer enthusiasts have beer cellars where they will shelve certain styles to see how they taste with a bit of age on them.

    Hey Guys! I work for Uinta Brewing, Utah's largest craft brewery and one of the biggest in the US. In Utah, all beer on tap is 4.0 ABV, not 3.5. All bottles and cans in the grocery stores and gas stations are also at 4.0 ABV. You can, however, get full strength anything with no upper limit in bottles and cans at all bars, restaurants, and liquor stores. Oh, and if you or the Beerists ever want some quality Utah beer, just let me know. We're doing some really nice new big beers, such as Cahoots(a beer line that we partner with a local homebrewer for), our new Flanders Red, or our new Brett Tripel, spiced with pink peppercorn.

      Somethings to clear up for people out of the state of Utah. Most beers in Utah are measured by Alcohol By Weight or ABW. The numbers, because of the math used to calculate the alcohol content, tend to be lower. 3.2% ABW is; if not the same, it is damn close, equal to 4.0% ABV.
      80% of the world uses ABW as the measuring standard, it is not a wacky Utah thing. Most of your domestic (Bud, Coors, and Miller) light (or lite) beers measure in at 3.2% ABW or 4.0% ABV. So if you’re drinking a light beer in the USA, you’re drinking a 3.2% ABW beer.
      The state of Utah and it’s DABC sued either Unita or Squatters Brewery because they were “misleading consumers over the ABW vs ABV.” Consumers were buying beers by this company because they thought they were getting a “stronger” beer. The Brewery won the lawsuit with this simple line, “Are you going to out law kph on speedometers because we don’t use that here in the states?” The state relented and now a bunch of companies are throwing on the ABV measurement vs the ABW measurement and dumb customers are still being dumb.
      So consumers beware there is a difference in ABW vs. ABV measurements and one doesn’t necessarily constitute a “stronger” beer.

      Also; another little fun fact done by “Big Beer,” what makes more sense: Changing a label or changing your brewing process for select states and change your product?
      The fine print in the label says something to the effect of “alcohol will not exceed “X% ABW.” So they up the “X%,” knowing their product will never exceed that limit.

    You guys should be careful with your comments about any country or what's good or bad in them.
    The fact you had the bad luck of being at a bad bar doesn't mean that this situation is "good" in there.
    I'm half Mexican and currently living in Paris France. Believe me when I say I've have had the worse experiences at some bars in here and I still love exploring and finding the ones that actually worth it.
    I mean, just be respectful no matter what ;)

    Sometimes the garnish makes aspects of the beer just pop. That same flavor wheel ya'll are talking about with trying to offset some bitter with sour or sweet from a garnish and all that.

    When I was first getting into beer as a hobby one of the first lesson's I learned about bad beer was about Corona. Corona is stored in clear bottles so the tendency is to be skunky. So any beer when you pop the cap, smell it. If you can still drink it then it's good. With Corona that is almost never the case, and that is the very reason for the lime. It helps mask the skunk. It's also a running joke with my friends that if there is a brewery with a lot of fruity beers we would say "Oh they brew shitty beer and then just add fruit to make it passable."

    It's kind of hard for me to understand all this with flavor as I don't drink alcohol but I need to understand the difference, this kind of helps with how the types of beer work. If anyone is willing to, what's a video that'll help someone like me understand beers and alcohol more in general.
