@@07wrxtr1 'you’re also being intellectually lazy by omitting the entire topic around the federal reserves market manipulation via asset price inflation.' No, not really being lazy. The reason why the world is in such sh*t is because this is what capitalism does by nature - corrupt anyone and anything (including the government and the federal reserve WHICH IS CAPITALIST by the way and put in BY CAPITALISTS BANKERS way back with Jekyll Island. Under capitalist modus operandi, if there is a shortage of any commodity, than they can charge more for it because a textbook in college on economic theory told them that is 'the law' - so capitalists have no incentive to create enough housing so they keep stocks artificially low to boost profits - and thus squeezing the middle class, including renters. The irony here is fantastic. "These people need help!" 6 months later: "I can't sell my house because there are too many people without houses..." The price: $550,000... Lol.
What do you think it would cost to build a comparable home in that area now? What would a buildable lot sell for? Could the state land have a low-income housing project built on it? I'm asking these questions to help me understand the context. I'm in California where nonprofit developer landlords build "affordable" housing projects and they cost $450,000-$990,000 per unit. Is $550k a lot for that?

The fact that there are so many homeless people that they are lining the freeway should be a big damn clue that the city, state and federal government need to take action on housing prices, wages and the mental health crisis. This inaction is insanity.
The solution to this crisis belongs solely to the federal government because if individual cities or states throw money at the problem, homeless people get wind of it and start pouring into the city or state. There has to be a national program that equitably deals with the problem of mental illness and homelessness that spreads the cost of the solution fairly over the nation. This is a national problem, individual cities or states can’t deal with it unilaterally.
Yes, but this whole homeless thing is a scam. They are transients. People flock to dem states because they give more in benefits. The dem states even advertise to others to bring these people in. Its window dressing for the public and the pretext for using billions in tax money for them. It goes to phony homeless charities, etc. Every county in the US has social workers and social services. They have caseloads with clients. They would also go to visit people. Where are their social workers? Also, the dems have made them acceptable as if they are a separate class of person. Why dont they work? What is their story? Transients didnt use to be honored. They had to move along, no loitering, etc. They are coddled now. There are people who do need help. I see them. Sitting in wheelchairs, sleeping at bus stops, missing limbs. Where is THEIR help? And we spend billions on illegals....housing, healthcare, welfare, etc. We are being bled dry.

Every city in the United States that allows homeless encampments should be sued by the citizens. There are limitless resources for the homeless. The problem is not a huge group of unfortunate people. The problem is groups of people 100% physically able to do a lot of types of work but are just too lazy to contribute to society and instead rather live life as adult babies expecting normal working people to feed them and give them money for their drug habits. It's truly sad and disgusting. It's time the working people fought back and demand these homeless people do something to contribute to society.
People pay taxes for government services such as public streets, police, sewer and water systems, etc. If the government is not upholding their end of the stick, then they should be sued. And it’s not like it’s a new problem and they haven’t had time to react.

Mortgage rates should have never been 2-3%. All that results in is another bubble where wages cannot support asset prices.
I’m continually shocked and amazed at how Portland liberals absolutely REFUSE to discuss the issue around central bank market manipulation.
Now Larry BETA Fink from Blackrock will happily swoop in and buy homes on the cheap and rent them back out.
Topics Portlanders refuse to talk about:
Fatherlessness
Federal reserve
Private property rights vs collectivist ideologies ( you don’t get all the benefits of capitalism while advocating marxist ideology - pick one and stick with it!)

'you’re also being intellectually lazy by omitting the entire topic around the federal reserves market manipulation via asset price inflation.'
No, not really being lazy. The reason why the world is in such sh*t is because this is what capitalism does by nature - corrupt anyone and anything (including the government and the federal reserve WHICH IS CAPITALIST by the way and put in BY CAPITALISTS BANKERS way back with Jekyll Island.
Capitalism needs a housing crisis to make money and guarantee control. And it is true that zoning laws and incompetent leadership contribute to insufficient housing stocks, all those private equity firms and landlords LOVE jacking up rent on tenants because it makes them more money.
Capitalism is in is cancerous cannibalizing phase.
Thank you for your response.
EXACTLY! Homes should sell for roughly 50x the cost of a big mac meal. That bungalow SHOULD cost about six thousand..
Homelessness has become a revenue stream for some municipalities.
That is another reason why they do not go away, too much money to grift.
We need some Marvin Heemeyer Killdozer types to scare the daylights out of some government officials, again.
We live in really evil society. The government can easily reduce homelessness problem if they give homeless once a day free room service, and free massage in late evening.
Loved the Killdozer comic books. Also, Marvin was a great welder/fabricator...
Yeah, you're making up a bunch of goofy cartoon shit, so don't pretend you're making a great point.
Can't help but wonder how the EPA is even got the slightest idea about all the bio human waste of pee/poo by the gallons, per person, per DAY!!!!
Wheeler's excuse is they need more money. LOL
It's so sad to see my beloved city looks like this.
The irony here is fantastic.
"These people need help!"
6 months later:
"I can't sell my house because there are too many people without houses..."
The price: $550,000...

This must be a tax shelter investment considering hes owned the property since Jan of 2021 and has only listed since July 7th. That was my thought. That bungalow looks more like a dollhouse. It's way overvalued. That's not the homeless people's problem.

Really? Everyone? You sound really smart.

You sound like your a strong supporter of the Chinese Communist Party.
Id commend him for filing a lawsuit. I'd do that as well and would file them every week if need be and encourage my neighbors to do the same.
But he voted for it, he doesn't need to move and destroy the next place
Why no class action suit so far? Get some powerhouse law firm to pull together a class action against the city. Publicize it. Make 'em squirm.
No one is moving there
San Diego, CA is like this. Went on vacation and sad driving around the huge number of homeless, especially on bridges over the highways.
You voted for this , just make 50% discount and sell overnight

550K for a small bungalow "just off I-5?" Can you hear and or see the freeway and traffic from the property?
Drop the price to $300k before the higher interest rates do and let me know if you get some buyers.
As a realtor I can tell you home sellers will blame anything and everything under the sun for why their house isn’t selling except for their price.
Private land owners need to realize "they want your land" and Mayor Wheeler was at a wine tasting.

I'm actually thankful that the homeless flock to Portland. That means they won't be in my town to bring down my home value 🤣
Don't worry. If you can't sell your house and end up homeless, you can just camp out on I-5 and get a handout from the local government.
Ted Wheeler demands answers from whoever is in charge of Portland!
The mayor wants more money while they spend spend spend and nothing changes. They simply move the camps to new locations and mop up the mess they left behind. It’s called whack-a-mole. I put money on this whiner being a democrat. Live with the consequences of your actions.
For years, rent has continued to skyrocket because it’s so popular to be here. The second the value of a house begins to creep downward towards reasonable, people freak out. Why does the tax payer owe you for not selling your home during the height of the market?

Not to mention all those homeless camps are devaluing your property
Portland would probably give you the bill to clean up the property 😮💨
lighter fluid and matches can eliminate a lot of those problems
Portland was suppose to ban day time camping and they still haven’t done shit
Every city in the United States that allows homeless encampments should be sued by the citizens. There are limitless resources for the homeless. The problem is not a huge group of unfortunate people. The problem is groups of people 100% physically able to do a lot of types of work but are just too lazy to contribute to society and instead rather live life as adult babies expecting normal working people to feed them and give them money for their drug habits. It's truly sad and disgusting. It's time the working people fought back and demand these homeless people do something to contribute to society.
Where there are homeless camps, the house value of the neighborhood goes down, big time.😢😢
People pay taxes for government services such as public streets, police, sewer and water systems, etc. If the government is not upholding their end of the stick, then they should be sued. And it’s not like it’s a new problem and they haven’t had time to react.
The lawsuits have already started in Portland.
That mayor allowed that city to get destroyed. I lived there previously and was wonderful, vibrant, thriving. Now it's a train wreck.
If you allow just one tent or RV, all hope is lost. They're all cockroaches that just infest and spread.
I can't believe they can't just make people take down their tents every morning, it's one thing to let homeless people sleep, but why are they allowed to just take over property?
