  • The giant pyramids of Egypt are known as one of the great wonders of the world! Rightfully so! They are spectacular! In the insect world however, I am almost just as amazed at the ability of a female Tawny Emperor butterfly to lay eggs in the shape of a giant pyramid!
We took some time last year to breed this butterfly and document its lifecycle. One of the most impressive stages of this butterflies lifecycle is certainly the giant pyramid shaped pile of eggs the females leave behind. We had some struggles along the way. You will see how a colony of white footed ants found my female butterflies and had their way with them. Finally, through a third method of obtaining eggs, we finally were successful.
Check out our video on Asterocampa clyton flora, the Tawny Emperor butterfly of South Florida as we see pyramid shaped egg piles!

Appreciate you sharing the whole experience, fails and all. I have learnt a great deal in the 6-8 weeks i have been following your channel and look forward to a daily dose of Keys moths. Whether it's watching a new video or old ones over and over, there is always good information to extract from them. 👍 . 🔎🐜🔥😆

Hey Peter. What a beautiful note! Thank you so much for the encouragement. We have so much more coming out over the next few months. I can barely keep up with the editing! Glad you’re enjoying the videos!

Great video! I was curious about how well sleeves worked. I'm sure they still work for a lot of people but it's good to know that they aren't predator proof and to be aware of that. My nervous ninny behavior of never wanting my moths outside because of all of the what ifs that can happen, also feels tremendously reaffirmed by this video 😂I'm so sorry for your losses though, it really does suck when bad stuff happens! I also like to get more than I think I'll need for that same reason as well, just in case anything bad happens I still have some survivors left.

Disease has been a big problem for me. I lost all 30 Mourning Cloak caterpillars in 2 days!

100%! I 100% agree with you. Yeah, pride went out the window along time ago when I started getting made fun of for walking around with a butterfly net in high school so I don’t mind showing the bad stuff that happens too! I think it’s Authentic and helps people learn! Thanks for watching

Quick tip: Try using a number of essential oils further down the branch that's been sleeved. As we know they use pheromones.

Could the ants have first come for the fruit then went after the butterflies? I know ants love sugar.

Use a moat of water around your bucket!

Perhaps. The white footed ants are opportunistic. They’ll eat anything
