The dance between images and sound remind me of how I saw the world as a child. And still do - only through a more multi-faceted lens.
    Very powerful experience ❤
And also.. That little Rubix Cube is giving me Mulholland Drive vibes~

So I appreciated reading someone else's interpretation of this. To me, the driver and the boy in the backseat represented different aspects of consciousness. In dreams, things with windows (like houses or a car) can represent the self...a consciousness containing entity. The man driving seems oblivious to the growing darkness and danger, as the scenery becomes more ominous and tighter and tighter. The boy becomes aware that this "man self" driving the car is destined for calamity, for he cannot see or feel. Essentially, he is a blind driver. All the while the boy clues into the darkness growing, and tries to escape, only to find that escape is futile. This is one ride that must be endured. We cannot escape this human condition of impending death and a personal trip through hell. Welcome .

    • @retteketette
      @retteketette 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I think the visuals and most of the music represents the thoughts of the boy. The dadfigure is represented by a distinct electronic sound.
2:16 as soon as the man in the front starts speaking (represented by the electronic noise), the boys thoughtprocess gets distorded represented by the disolving rythm
2:24 the message gets distilled in the boy, struggle within leads him to his darkest fears; possibly a traumatic experience led him to this. Where is his mom?
2:53 Everything is now panic; the boy is unable to think straight represented in the cube being solid black and unsolvable and his world spinning
3:31 The dadfigure starts talking again and the boy gains a new form of thought represented by the lightpoleballs interacting with his thoughts and dads voice.
      4:09 closure

    • @noaglverbodentoegang
      @noaglverbodentoegang ปีที่แล้ว

@@retteketette pretty much this, both seem very interesting notions about it.
You could essentially even say that the boy is still learning the difference between what dad already knows.
Fantasy and real life are not to be mixed in-between.
Or you could even say simply, the child is still coping with all the garbled noises of life and dad is the one who has mastered it hence when he speaks he actually sings out the noise.
This last also could be a two side perspective of life.
Adults learn the obvious and siblings still need to grasp this.
Or Adults speak out as many adults do, but the sibling has still his own voice which is the visual aspect projected in this video.

I have been thinking about giving/finding an interpretation/explanation to this piece for quite some time now...and I feel like the time has finally come to write down some thoughts.
If you are an avid reader and you don't mind diving in this analysis, then follow my line of reasoning.
I hope all of you out there would like to read this and fill in the missing parts (in your humble opinion folks, as only mr. De Meyer and Tobin have the answer) with your thoughts, opinions, comments!
*I apologise for my English skills, as I am not a native speaker. You might find the structure of the sentences a bit odd, along with some mistakes here and there. I am sure you'll understand.*
    Cheers
    *_The theme_* :
I noticed the *leitmotif* or *theme* of this piece being the concept of *tension*.
This idea seems to be carried and supported by some elements throughout the video, such as the utility poles (power lines carrying electricity), the shapes that different objects take, the general tone of the interaction between the characters (father and son?), as well as the final scene with the scissor about to release the tension by cutting the massive string.
Also it seems to me that Tobin is using a chordofone strucking the strings as a percussion instrument (same instrument used in On a Hilltop Sat the Moon?). Again, connected to strings in "tension".
The electrical cables seem to be referred as the "vipers" in the title.
If this was interpreted as such, then it could possibly mean that the telephonic signals are the vipers (carrying their poison) and they are following us as we move. I can bring it further and say that maybe those very followers are the ones that don't give us rest, because we are monitored, traceable at all times, impossible to hide, forced to be exposed to their poison at all time.
Also, this would definitely relate to a concept such as the one of tension.
*_Analysing the video and its structure_* :
In its purest and basic structure the video is a "snap-shot" that shows the journey of two individuals in a car: a kid and the driver.
If the two are blood-related it's not clarified nor explicitly explained. We can assume that, because normally that's what you would think by looking at such scene. But nothing seems to be "within the norm" here.
As soon as the video start, we hear the chordofone played by Tobin.
The very same instrument will start to articulate the on-screen presence of the cables a few moments later (00:20), establishing a relationship between the on-screen object (the vipers) and the music.
This not only charachterises the strings/vipers with a voice, but it establishes a specific diegetic sound, connecting what we see with what we hear.
As the engine starts and the car moves, a vibrating/oscillating sound begins (00:10) and we are introduced to the first and main character: the kid. ( [00:15] even though I would consider the main character the vipers/the tension... oh well, you get what I mean).
At first glance, he seems like a standard kid, sitting in the back of the car. He appears to be rather bored, holding in his hand a Rubik's cube.
If you noticed, however, as soon as his sight engages with the stream of cables, he rotates the first face of the cube. As he does so, the cable start to deform and have an unusual shape.
As this happens, the driver looks a bit worried (and disappointed?), and we can see him staring through the rear-view mirror, presumably checking on his passenger.
We are now able to see an odd landscapes, with modified electrical cables following the main road.
The kid moves the cube's faces again (00:30). The cables are split from two, now in three, then in four. The expression on the driver's face doesn't seem of amusement (00:36).
The kid however seems to be enjoying the view of his doing, even though it appears like he's experimenting with the surrounding reality, bringing the flock of birds to line-up in the sky in geometrical shapes (01:00). It also seems like the birds are following a _pulse_ or a rythm, related to something (either the cube or the kid?).
It appears that not only the birds are behaving weirdly as the cube rotates; a bunch of utility poles are now shaped into a sphere (01:18) and, as soon as the kid rotates another face, these sphere start to move (01:30).
We keep following the car's journey with an ominous feeling in our guts as we are given the chance to witness the experience as if we effectively were passengers. The shot at (01:42) clearly shows us a specific POV.
Then, something happens. The last face of the cube is put in position. As the kid does so, a new "voice" gets added to the music, and electronic voice/music (01:56).
The cube is now completed and the kid is looking out for the driver's attention. The driver looks in the rear-view mirror with a perplexed look on his face.
At (02:15), the driver is presented with a close up and for the first time he says something to the kid (*unfortunately I could not read his lips here, if you can, please write it in the comment section*).
Also, the same sound heard at (00:10) is now back as if it was articulating the different sections of the story.
Another close-close up of his mouth (02:22). Now he seems to say something in, maybe, French?
To me, it looks like he says: "...commence". That would translate perfectly as "and it begins".
The two character break the fourth wall by looking at the audience/in camera then the world temporarily turns to black.
As the black fades away the kid is holding the cube, which is now coated in black.
It appears as if the junction of all the cube's faces has given completion to something important in the external world.
The forest around them is now covered in antenna-trees and if the cube was the tool to influence reality before, now it appears to be reality itself.
This can be seen when the kid rotates the whole cube (03:06), and the camera rotates (as if the world was about to stumble), making the kid feel anxious and uncomfortable, forcing him to open the back seat's window and releasing the tension.
    *_Final Thoughts_*
A couple of *special mention* are due here.
The whole concept of the "Black Box" is quite interesting as I believe it might refer to these things I won't explain, but only link to make things easier:
    - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackboxing
    - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_box
_Is the kid setting in motion something maybe? If so, it would seem like the cube is the key to this power. But why he's the one holding it? Why not someone else? Where is the man driving him?_
_Maybe the source of this power is not the cube but the kid himself? If so, what does it mean in the bigger picture?_
*Maybe* I am just overthinking it, maybe not! Let me know :D
    *Übercheers!*

Thanks for taking the time to write that. I agree with your observations and would add two points:
      1. It could be that the audience doesn't hear the father's words because we're as deaf to them as the child is.
      2. The father seems to be concerned and his attention is split between the road ahead and the child behind him. If the father is really that concerned, why not stop driving and attend to the child? Presumably it's imperative that he continue forward or at least pay attention to driving. Is this an allegory to the situation parents often find themselves in; of not being able to give their children the attention they require due to external forces?

...it is people like the original poster that reaffirms that purpose of the internet ... I have been listening to Amon Tobin for over 10 years (thanks Spotify) and THIS is the song that I keep coming back to.... I know that I am looking for something... or maybe something is looking for me, I am not sure, but the hold that this song has on me, making me spiritually uncomfortable in the same way pushing through to a personal best of any kind is ... from the physical (lifting weights, winning the match against a blood rival) or achieving a personal best on a run or in academia ( which is linked to the universe more directly than the physical).
I am searching for a meaning to anything. This music, this song in particular, urges me like no other... not the theme from "Rocky" or "Top Gun" feels as urgent as this ONE SONG out of literally hundreds of thousands of others that have stirred the depths of my soul as this one has...
Reading this comment (and several others... this one is unquestionably "first among equals")that awakens the parts of my mind that seem to be asleep from physical trauma to once more grasp at the ephemeral wisps of my own imagination... it was and is a pleasure to read your words and as a native American English speaker, may I compliment you on yours!!

Songs almost never give me chills under any circumstance, but with this song paired with this oddly relatable video, I was getting them consistently throughout the entire track. It's a very nice video, awesome work!

@@Dismoeyy Its artistic in nature in terms of the music and video. When I just heard the music it was hard to understand because I'm used to the older albums by Amon Tobin.

    Here is my interpretation -
It’s about a lifelong relationship between a father and a son. In the beginning there is a tension building up between them. Father, obviously caring for his child, does not realize how different his world is. A boy has his own reality constructed and he is still in the process of doing it. Despite his age, he cant already stand the small space he is confined to, with remarks and control from a judging power. He wants to figure out stuff, express himself. Rubik’s cube is a symbol of this. Once he finishes it, he has built up his self worth. He believes in himself, he is an another individual - Hence the amazing look he gives on some comment from his father. Emancipation follows, He quickly lets some fresh air in the car and his whole body gets this fresh newborn transcendental feeling. Rope-Vipers are cut loose, but they may still follow him to some extent in adult life.

Already knw of the pole and beat sync, but I just noticed that the little loopy wires on the power lines also sync -- halfway down the line you will get the little bumps when the little guitar riff is played.
