My family owned a dish from the early 90s until 2004, I believe. When we moved from our old house, we couldn't take it with us because it was so big. Just being able to make the dish turn one way then the other to access all sorts of "unknown" channels was cool beyond belief. Having instant access to anything now can't replicate the same feeling, because there were bizarre video feeds and strange channels that now only exist as recorded VHS tapes in someone's storage. The most infamous free channel that I remember from back then was N1/Network 1, on F1/C1-11. It showed late night bikini contests, barely censored adult anime, weird movies, music videos, etc. all funded by a constant barrage of sleazy 1-900 sex chat commercials. 💗 What more could a naughty 90s kid want???

When i met my father in 93 and visited his house, he had one and it was the coolest thing ever. Been researching these "today"... they're still in use and DO work - great if you live remotely.
They seemed like the coolest thing in the world back in the day!
When my dad first bought our former house in 1987 there was one in the backyard. This one was even bigger than most of the dishes that were big and was already outdated and didn't work, so they immediately planned to get rid of it. A short time later my dad was there doing some work, and splashed gasoline on a huge wasp nest that was on the bottom of the back side of the dish. He then had the bright idea to set it on fire, thinking the nest would burn and then go out, and went to do something else. The dish was made out of fiberglass however, which is combustible but not flammable, and so it caught the bottom of the dish on fire, and slowly started working its way up. A few minutes later he noticed the smell and walked back around to see that the dish was on fire. He then cut through the house to go get the hose, and there was some guy at the front door who told him that his satellite dish was on fire!
Anyways, my mom came in a few days later (they weren't married yet), and needless to say, she wasn't happy at first, but was overall glad that he wasn't hurt or didn't get the fire department called. But ultimately she didn't care since they were getting rid of it anyways.
