I'm not sure what area of the country you go into the backcountry? But won't the goats be sitting ducks for attacks by wolves and grizzlies? That would certainly be the case where I live which is by the Tetons.
I used the same thing in the mountains with our horses with a lariat tied tightly between 2 trees above the horses heads overnight.
