    Hi, everyone! This is Lara Hammock from the Marble Jar Channel and in today's video, I'll show you my workaround for getting around the export limits for Kindle highlights.
    I did a video a little while ago showing how I export Kindle highlights to Evernote and Google Sheets. So, I ran into an issue recently that I hadn't encountered before. I'm in a graduate program and am renting my textbooks for the semester in digital format. As I do my reading for the semester, I've been highlighting passages and then exporting them into a spreadsheet as a means of taking notes on the reading. The way I usually do this is by accessing the Kindle management website through my PC at this URL (read.amazon.com/notebook).
    The issue I was running into was that I had apparently exceeded the number of highlights or amount of text that the website lets you export, so I was getting this message. I was having to go back into an earlier chapter and delete the highlights one at a time in order to free up space to allow me to export the highlights that occur later in the text. It was a hassle since you can't bulk delete highlights. I guess I hadn't had this issue before since I was not using textbooks, which are long and full of highlightable passages.
    My workaround isn't a cure all, but it meets my needs. Instead of going to the Kindle management website, I used the Kindle app on my iPad to export the highlights. The export limits seems to be a little larger on the app for whatever reason. From the Kindle app, hit this button at the top to see all of your highlights. Then hit the Share button. Choose Email, pick a citation style if needed, and hit Export. Before you do, you can see at the bottom of the screen that Kindle is calculating how much of the book you are able to export. They definitely don't want you to export 100% of the book for copyright reasons. They set the limit at 10%. I'm up to 4% now, which gives me lots more room to highlight than the website highlight page allowed.
    Once you hit Export, and email it to yourself, you'll get this nice Notebook Export, which as it turns out, gives you even MORE info than the website does. Here -- I'll show them side by side. You can see that the website export only gives location number (which I find kind of useless). The iPad export gives you the Page number instead AND provides the title of the section of the book the highlight was found in. I like all of this additional info. I keep all of these highlights in a Google Spreadsheet. I'm doing a separate video on how I organize all of my highlights per class. Let me know what you think! Comments are always appreciated and thanks for watching!

    Great video - thx! Do you have any advice / workaround if the notes exceed the limit, of e.g. 10% ? I didn't know before there is any limit and I like to highlight quite some parts in different colors.

      You can cut and paste using the Windows Kindle app. It's clumsy and takes forever, but it's a best option than typing it all out!

      You can choose which chapters you export. Select some chapters, make sure their under the 10% limit, and then email. Repeat until you get all the chapters. Might take a while, buts it’s better than copy pasting.

    How do you do this if you pull the .txt file directly from the "documents" directory off of the Kindle itself using the PC?

      I haven’t done this, but would be interested in how it goes if it works for you!

    Thanks for this. Unfortunately the only Notebook export option I’m offered is “Flashcards” but if I can find a way to restore the Email option I’m sure I can use this method. UPDATE: Email option only available for purchased/rented books, not samples.

    when i sideload books to my paperwhite kindle..in the AZW3 format...after recycling all the tags, gettting new metadata...and using the "quality chick" ASIN fix ....and sending this file to my KINDLE....there seems to be NO WAY to keep the SHARE function...both for my highlights and notes....there is an "export to" tag on the dropdown notes list...which succeeds in sending this message to my email: "We are sorry that we encountered an error while trying to export and send your notes from “Patria (edición tapa dura) (Andanzas) (Spanish Edition)”. Please export your notes again from your Kindle E-reader. " What to do?? i love this "sharing" option, and i use it all the time on my amazon purchased books....and i have spent literally HOURS...trying to make it work on my side loaded books...with NO SUCCESS. HELP!! please!!

      Hi, Mike. This is not something I’ve attempted, but i applaud your persistence. Sounds exactly like the kind of rabbit hole I would go down - fruitful or not! Sounds like you managed to find a workaround, but I’ll let you know if I find anything more elegant!

      I have been able to export successfully with other "documents" that I've imported into the Kindle app. Perhaps if you provide more info, I might be able to help?

      @Marble Jar Channel When I send a PDF I created to Kindle, I can underline the text, but it won't let me share the underlined text to my emai. Thanks for the help.

      Ah - I can't really speak to this for PDFs since I always use Good Reader to highlight and export PDFs. No limits on that app! I have a video on that, if you are interested (th-cam.com/video/jh8tebAPWTc/w-d-xo.html).

    Have you figured out how to export only a chapter of the book, and not all the highlights? I know you can filter on highlight color, but what about chapter. Also, can you highlight a chapter and delete the highlights and it will recover the amount you exported? Thanks for your help in advance!!!

    • @marblejarchannel
      @marblejarchannel  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't figured this out. I just export the whole thing and select the parts I need. I have had some success with deleting hightlights, but it's possible that they keep track of how much you have already exported in their calculation.
