  • Once the Base was painted I needed to move it to it's new position in the machine shop. Once there it will be reassembled. Don came over to help so I did not scratch it all up and something happens when the move is in progress...
    Used Bridgeport Parts. " I have 30 Bridgeports , we do have parts, all original Bridgeport parts, Located in New England ... Ask for Sam 860-964-6549

    That was fun.
    I’ve been a machinist for over 40 years. I was smoking 3 packs of Marlboro reds a day.
    When I quit smoking in 2016, it was because of the price of cigarettes. I really liked smoking, but when I figured out how much money I spent on them, I couldn’t believe it. I quit cold turkey. I just kept telling myself that I don’t smoke. I told myself, “Self, if I catch you reaching for a cigarette, I’ll break your fingers!” Also tried to to pretend that I just smoked one, so I could wait. The urge would pass. I was gonna try patches, gum, or those pills but in the end, I just man up’d and quit. I knew I was stronger than I let myself be. Then, all of a sudden, I just didn’t want one anymore. After six years, I treated myself to a really expensive cigar. I’m 68 years old this year. All is good and it really improved my health. My nose and tastebuds are happy again. Food was so much better that I gained 30 pounds. There’s a scale at work and I watched every one of those pounds go on. When it reached 30 pounds, I decided to take them off too. I found a new control of myself, but I know it’s just answered prayers. He made it easy for me…

      I was also a 3 pack/day for ~20 yrs. I held my dad's hand as passed from lung cancer. Cold turkey because I wasn't going to let my kids see me go out like that. I wasn't very pleasant to be around for a month or so. I went back to woodworking and then started in metal on a lathe. The $$ saved pays for my supplies.

      @@donmadere4237, I was doing 3 packs of Marlboro reds also and I quit cold Turkey, one day I just told myself no more. I don’t think patches or gum or whatever can make you quit, it’s willpower in the end that does it. After 30 years I’d be afraid of lighting one up for fear of going right back to 3 packs a day.
      I always tell myself I haven’t quit smoking, I just haven’t had one in 30 years.
      Good luck with it, we’re pulling for you!

    It's easy to move a Bridgeport around on a concrete floor with some water pipes you don't have to get it very far off the ground and you don't have to work very hard to get the pipes out while the pallet and pallet Jack work pipes are surprisingly easy.

      I think if you will look back through some of the 400 videos here you will see that more often than not:) BUT the pallet jack is really a lot easier... Problem was getting it off the pallet... Oh for my size machines waterpipes are not good... I use 1 inch solid rounds as they do not crush under the weight and keep on rolling...

    Boy - I hope it’s not too late for Don. His microphone was picking up some AWFUL lung sounds. My brother and I started smoking in 1958. I quit in 1964. He didn’t quit until 2021. He died two years later at age 78. I’m 81 and still going strong. Smoking got my dad, my mom, my brother and two uncles. Nasty stuff.

    You’re right to angle the mill. It will let you clamp a long piece to the table if necessary. I should show you pics of the South Bend 14-1/2 I turned over. Also taking it off of the sled to raise it up enough to install leveling feet. I brought it back, but it wasn’t easy.

    • @10swatkins
      @10swatkins  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes angled machines are much better if you just don't have the space..... That side of the shop is 40 feet long and I have a 20" Axelson Lathe, a Bridgeport mill, Monarch 10EE and a Bridgeport Torqcut 22 in a full enclosure crammed into that space.. Of course the other side is not much better as a Rockford Planer, BOB and a 4 x 4 surface plate are crammed into the other side... The planer takes up 27 feet of that though...

I have the two electron control boards but while i'm at it I want to change it over from 440 to 220 and the transformers are proving hard to find at a reasonable cost. So far the electronics have cost over 1200.. It is up next for working on as the Bridgeport is needed far more right now.... I sold my working Bridgeport mil before this on is ready :(

    I know what the riser is but I don't know what the spider is. So what is the spider and how does it cut down on bolt length?

    • @10swatkins
      @10swatkins  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      There are no holes, in the base casting of the column, for the bolts to attach the top of the machine, Turret, too. The Column has a flange about 1.5 inches wide all the way around the top that the Turret sits and rotates on. That Flange is not wide enough for the bolts to hit so they made a cast iron 4 legged "Spider" that has 4 threaded holes for the bolts and fits inside the column to clamp the turret to the column... The spider rotates with the Turret when you align or move the Turret..

    Next purchase Steve, a set of machine skates. From experience in my youth moving large lumps of 60 year old cast iron textile machinery, the all steel caterpillar tracked ones are better than the wheeled variety and the rubber tired ones are useless.

    • @10swatkins
      @10swatkins  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Oh I have them.. Sometimes its the only way.. With the pallet jack I find its much safer as uneven concrete will let a skate slip out. This event was just me hitting the wrong direction on the control.. Thanks for watching and the comments!

Find something to fiddle with to keep your hards occupied, too. Your used to fiddling with your cig and now your hands don't have that to occupy them. 20 yrs since I quit, & still want one every now and then.
