Thanks for watching! Excellent observation! I always want to reinforce where I want my dog to spend the most time. So for this game, at my side is where I deliver the treat.
Unfortunately, I've met several that still think that way. Good news is more and more trainers are continuing their educaiton and changing their techniques and philosophies.
Hi Tom, can I ask when you'd like your paycheck to stop? Probably never, right?! We always want to reinforce our dogs for things we want to see more of, for tasks they've been working really hard at learning, or when they are first learning how to do something new that you're teaching them. Since so many training opportunities happen both inside and outside the home we want to be prepared to reinforce behaviors or be ready to create a positive association with something our dog finds unfamiliar or scary. Yes, we can wean off treats for simple things like "sit" or "down" but if you ask for these cues in new places or with new distractions present we want to go back to reinforcing for performing the cue. For tougher cues and tasks like leave it, come, or more controlled walks through distracting places we want to continue to reinforce. We talk a lot about reinforcement, when to wean off, and how to create a varying reinforcement schedule in module 1 of our course.
@@tomjackson975 ideally, yes. When I walk out the door with my dogs, my treat pouch is always loaded and ready to go. Just recently a garbage truck came barreling down the road and one of my dogs is a little concerned with it so as it went by it was raining down kibble, kept my dog more focused towards the ground instead of staring at the truck, made a positive association with the truck as it went by.
Hey Michelle! I watch your training videos religiously and I swear by you and your training!!! I have a 13 week old lab that just recently, when taken for walks, has started really pulling. I use a standard collar for him, but was recommended to start using a martingale collar instead, was wondering what your thoughts are about them since I never heard of them before? I like your point that a lot of the time switching to other forms of collars can just be a bandaid to the problem. Thank you for these incredibly helpful videos!!
Thank you for your feedback! We are glad you have found our channel so useful. It's hard to say why your pup is pulling and if switching the collar would be the solution. Have you looked into the Pro-Level of our course? You can submit photos and videos in our private student-only facebook group for our trainers to review and give feedback to. You can also have a back-and-forth conversation with them on one of the three zoom calls a week. Check it out here: www.howtotrainadreamdog.com/puppy-perfection-course-learn-more/

Thanks for reaching out. We are happy to hear you love the videos we have. Since the concern you have is a bit more complex, we highly recommed you speak with a behaviorist (different than a trainer) in your area. You can find one from the Fear-Free site directory here at this link fearfreepets.com/resources/directory/

Paid$$$ to a dog trainer to help me with introducing walking to my 9 month old male Schnauzer as he pulls to no end. Her methods don’t work for Max. Thanks for this video.
You may need to either find a higher value treat or other food item (like boiled chicken or cheese) or as I mentioned in the video, the environment may be too much for your pup to handle.
This is brilliant, thanks so much for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed it!
GREAT points. Noticed how on the shuffle back you directed dog to your side and not giving treat in front. Thanks for video.

Great ideas thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
No trainers will tell you there’s only one solution. But what you say after that is good.
Unfortunately, I've met several that still think that way. Good news is more and more trainers are continuing their educaiton and changing their techniques and philosophies.
Michele, when do you stop the treats? Thank you
