I am from Colonia LeBaron, Chihuahua, Mexico. The Tarahaumara Indians comedown from the mountains often, to sell their wild craft goods. A few decades ago, one of them came down from the mountains to work for my cousin seasonally, and he taught me how to make huaraches. He made the soles out of tire rubber. It is pronounced wah-rah-shez. Roll the r so that it sounds kind of like d.
Brilliant tutorial, thank you! This will be the first leather project. Where do i purchase leather, vibram, the 3 hole punch, synthetic-sinew-nylon cord, tool to clean edges, hole punch, S-shaped needle, sail needle, adjustable hole punch, 550 cord, and anything else required.
This is awesome I have some vibram on some merrel hiking boots of mine and my grandfather said he put vibram soles on some hiking boots back in the early 60's and he's been sold on vibram ever since. Thanks for the awesome video.
I made these just with the vibram sole, no leather. I used shoelaces for tying them. I use them in daily life and for running. They have lasted more than a year. The vibram sole was not expensive. The top surface, in contact with the foot, is textured in such a way that the foot doesn't slip or feel uncomfortable. I got the sheet from a German company called extremtextil online. The rubber is 4mm thick and the smallest sheet, costing less than 10 euros, makes two pairs of huaraches. I run on roads and stony tracks. The sole protects me from sharp stones on the forest tracks. It is surprising how good they are.

Hey Jack. Can you share us the list of items that the sandals are made of. I have written down vibram rubber sheet, lesther sheet, nylon string (for sowing), rope (what kind?). Anything missing? What about the tools? I have noted leather cutting cisors, paint maker, 2 needles (1 straight , 1 curved). What else? Thanks!
Jérémie Litzler the rope is 550 cord or para cord. The string I used was synthetic sinew from a leather shop. The tools are 2 sail needles. They can be straight or bent but bent works better for me. I think by paint maker you are seeing leather glue to bond the leather to the vibram rubber. That and a leather punch for your needles to follow should be everything. You want to make the hole prior to trying to push your needle through or you will end up breaking a lot of needles.
Jérémie Litzler Good luck! Share pictures on FB if you build some.

How thick are your leather and the vibram rubber? Thanks for the extra details.
Jérémie Litzler I think I used a pencil or paint pen. I’m sorry I don’t remember what thickness I ordered but that’s personal preference anyway. The leather will crush flat but that rubber is super robust. Message me on Facebook under the same name as the channel name. Or I admin the Bushcraft & Survival Tribe Group.
When you say you usually use Gorilla Glue, which one would you use? I'm about to stick some thin leather to my rubber huarache sole but I want to make sure I use the right stuff.
Looking back I think I'd rather use goop or something rubbery. I used gorilla glue because that's what I had not so much what I wanted. It foams up which isn't good.
I have a pile of leather for stuff and just grab some. No matter what you use it’s going to pack out. So start with something thick. Like moose hide or elk neck hide
@@TJackSurvival By "pack out" you mean compress? So then, a layer of padding is appropriate? What type? How thick padding? Again, also, how thick for the Vibram soles?
Very cool. What kind of life span would you guess you get out of a pair and how often do you need to replace the 550? Also, where do you pick up the rubber? Keep up the great work.
+wjf213 I have a pair of these out of pure leather that I wore almost daily including running in them last year. They held up to the cement and I still have them. So I guess it depends on what kind of leather you use but they will last a very long time. I think it's more a question of miles than time though.
+pennyghost Oh ya that one. It is full of batteries and it is a mobile power supply with a 12v plug in it that I use to run a water pump in my raft. It doubles as a power supply for a phone, ham radio, whatever else.

Oil tan if you can. Vegetable tan won't hold up with the water and sweat you bring to it. I still have those same shoes and they are great.
